Inside the Program
This program is designed for students who are looking to be immersed in German language and culture. Students directly enroll in FUBiS, the summer program of the Freie Universität of Berlin. Students take one content course in English along with a German language course. Field trips to museums, memorials and cultural and political institutions are integral components of all classes. In some courses, students have the unique opportunity to attend specially organized and exclusive round-table discussions with decision makers, diplomats and experts in their field of study.
Develop your intercultural communication skills as a part of the international community of students from more than 50 countries that attends FUBiS every year. Further these skills by living with a Berlin family in a homestay arranged by FUBiS.
Credit Explanation / Academic Details
Students enroll in a semi-intensive German course with one subject course taught in English or German. Summer II (6 weeks) course contact hours are 108 hours of semi-intensive German plus a 72 hour subject course. Summer IV (4 weeks) course contact hours are 48 hours of semi-intensive German plus 48 hours of one subject course.
All courses offered in Berlin are recognized and approved for academic credit by various AHA partner institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
Enroll with German and other international students in the FUBiS summer program, in either the four- or six-week term. Taking a German language course along with a content course allows students to improve their language skills as well as further their knowledge of a subject matter. Every year FUBiS offers more than 45 courses, both content and German classes. These courses are held mostly in English by distinguished German and international faculty. Content classes are kept small, with the number remaining below 18 students. Not all courses listed are offered every term. Course offerings are subject to change depending on enrollment and availability.
The FUBiS staff are a dedicated team, motivated to organize this summer program for international students. FUBiS carefully selects its teaching faculty, and instructors must have demonstrated outstanding competence and experience in their particular discipline. Therefore, the FUBiS faculty are an exceptional group made up from many regions around the world.
Students studying in Berlin during the summer will have the opportunity to live in a homestay in Berlin. The homestays vary from relatively small, centrally located apartments to larger private homes outside of central Berlin. Host families are carefully screened and provide good, affordable accommodation offering you the opportunity to develop your independence and language proficiency by participating in family, community, cultural and recreational activities. Homestay living is ideal for students who seek the comfort and security of family life, with the strength and depth of relationships depending on the degree of your adaptability. Many students cherish their homestay experience as one of the most rewarding aspects of their Berlin experience and remain lifelong friends with their host family.
