Inside the Program
This program is designed for students who want to focus on German language skill development. Students directly enroll in FUBiS, the summer program of the Freie Universität of Berlin. FUBiS offers semi-intensive and intensive German classes on up to five proficiency levels, allowing students to improve their German skills considerably. Field trips to vast historic, cultural and political institutions are integral components of all classes. Develop your intercultural communication skills as part of an international community of students from more than 50 countries studying in Berlin. Further these skills by living with a Berlin family in a homestay arranged by FUBiS.
Credit Explanation / Academic Details
Students enroll in the intensive German course of 180 contact hours for Summer I (6 weeks) or 120 contact hours during Summer III (4 weeks). All courses offered in Berlin are recognized and approved for academic credit by various AHA partner institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
Every year FUBiS offers more than 45 courses—both content and German classes. Intensive German language classes meet every weekday and allow students to focus on and improve their German skills. Courses are kept small; the number of participants remains below 15 students. The FUBiS staff are a dedicated team, motivated to organize this summer program for international students. FUBiS carefully selects its teaching faculty, and instructors must have demonstrated outstanding competence and experience in their particular discipline. Therefore the FUBiS faculty are an exceptional group made up from many regions around the world.
Students studying in Berlin during the summer will have the opportunity to live in a homestay in Berlin. The homestays vary from relatively small, centrally located apartments to larger private homes outside of central Berlin. Host families are carefully screened and provide good, affordable accommodation offering you the opportunity to develop your independence and language proficiency by participating in family, community, cultural and recreational activities. Homestay living is ideal for students who seek the comfort and security of family life, with the strength and depth of relationships depending on the degree of your adaptability. Many students cherish their homestay experience as one of the most rewarding aspects of their Berlin experience and remain lifelong friends with their host family.
