AHA AND PARTNER SCHOLARSHIPS
AHA firmly believes that every student should have the opportunity to study abroad. To that end, AHA provides scholarship funding every year for participants in its programs.
AHA Scholarship: AHA is passionate about study abroad and hopes that every student is able to participate in a life-changing experience abroad. With this in mind, AHA offers scholarship opportunities to encourage interested students to apply for and participate in an AHA study abroad experience. The AHA Scholarship is a monetary scholarship available to all students applying for any AHA study abroad program. To learn more, click here.
Diversity Excellence Scholars Abroad: Each year, AHA and UO Study Abroad Programs will fund participant(s) in an AHA program to serve as Diversity Excellence Scholars Abroad (DESA). DESA participants must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Oregon; criteria include communication skills, background related to a historically under-represented group in study abroad participation at UO, and financial need. Application information and forms are available on the OMAS website.
OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING
The first places to look for funding for study abroad are your home campus study abroad and financial aid offices. If you receive financial aid on campus, federal and state aid can generally be applied to study abroad programs approved for credit by your home institution. In addition, many institutions provide special scholarship funding for study abroad; your study abroad office is the best place to start.
Gilman Scholarships
Awards of up to $5,000 are awarded each year to students with high financial need; additional funding is available . Applicants must be U.S. citizens and receiving Federal Pell Grant funding. Applicants must be planning to study abroad for at least 4 weeks, at any time of year. Although applicants are strongly encouraged to consider destinations outside of Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, applications for students studying in these countries are also considered and in recent years a large percentage of awards were granted to applicants going to these countries. In 2009-2010 nearly 40% of applicants received an award.
Phi Kappa Phi Grants for Study Abroad
45 grants of $1,000 each are awarded each year to students from institutions with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and have been accepted to a study abroad program prior to the scholarship application deadline.
Glimpse Correspondents Program
Glimpse, an online journal dedication to international travel, awards several Correspondents positions to talented writers and photographers who will be spending at least 10 weeks volunteering, working or studying outside their home country. Correspondents receive a $600 stipend and guaranteed publication on the Glimpse website.
