Travel Insurance

Travel insurance helps to protect you and your valuables while travelling to Australia. However, it isn’t required in order to study in Australia.

A typical travel insurance plan includes:

Reimbursement for loss, damage, or destruction of personal belongings, including electronics like laptops, phones, and cameras

Medical care after an illness or accident (in addition to your Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC)

Coverage for the cost of bringing someone to stay with you if you’re hospitalized

Personal liability: for example, if you cause personal injury or property damage to someone else during your travels, insurance covers collateral damages up to a set amount

Trip disruption: for example, if your connecting flight is delayed, insurance will pay for your food and accommodation while you wait for the next available flight

Emergency evacuation and repatriation expenses if you need to travel for medical treatment

Things to Consider

Not all travel insurance plans cover the same things. Think about what you want coverage for, and research to see which plans meet your needs.

Many insurance providers offer digital claims processing, which makes it easier to submit claims while abroad.

Some credit cards provide travel insurance. So, check with your bank to learn what your card benefits offer!

While most students will purchase travel insurance from a provider in their home country, some OSHC providers offer optional travel insurance add-ons with their health insurance plans.

Health Insurance

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory health insurance for all international students. It covers most basic medical expenses within Australia. You’ll need to apply for OSHC before you apply for a visa, as you’ll need to show proof of OSHC during your student visa application.

To make it easier to access health care, all major medical providers now offer 24/7 telehealth consultations through mobile apps. You’ll also be able to access enhanced mental health support and improved pharmaceutical benefits.

Students must be covered by OSHC through their entire stay. If your OSHC lapses, it can lead to automatic visa cancellation.

Basic OSHC coverage usually includes:

GP (general practitioner or family doctor) visits

Hospital treatment in public hospitals or agreement private hospitals

Emergency ambulance services nationwide

Some prescription medicines

OSHC Doesn’t Cover:

Dental care

Optical services (glasses, contact lenses, eye exams)

Physiotherapy

Chiropractic treatment

Cosmetic surgery

Treatment outside Australia

Purchasing OSHC

You can purchase OSHC through any eligible private health insurer registered in Australia. This must be done before applying for your student visa.

Any family members joining you in Australia must also have OSHC coverage. The policy must list the names of all covered individuals, matching their passport names exactly. Policy types include: Single, Dual (a student plus a partner or children), and Family (a student, their partner, and any dependent children under 18).

There are currently six government-approved OSHC providers. They are:

Some international students must complete medical and radiological examinations as part of the visa application process. Health exams are typically required for students staying over 12 months, those entering healthcare or childcare environments, and students from countries with higher tuberculosis rates (including most South Asian countries).

The examination includes a physical check-up and chest X-ray for students aged 11 or older. The exam must be conducted by a panel doctor approved by the Department of Home Affairs using the eMedical system.

You can find a list of government-approved doctors on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements

Students from Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom may access Australian Medicare under reciprocal agreements. However, obtaining OSHC is still mandatory for your student visa, even if you’re eligible for Medicare.

Australia 101

Australia is a land of contrasts. It’s the smallest continent and one of the largest countries on Earth. Australia’s geography is extremely diverse, from the snow-capped mountains of the Australian Alps and Tasmania, to large deserts, and tropical and temperate forests.

Australia has six states and two territories. The capital of Australia is Canberra. In the Top 50 QS Best Student Cities rankings for 2026, Melbourne ranked fifth globally and Sydney ranked sixth. Both cities consistently appear in lists of the world’s top 10 student cities. The Economist also lists Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide among the world’s 10 best cities to live in.

So, Why Study in Australia?

Australian degrees are highly sought-after by global employers and can open doors to an exciting future. Here are some reasons why.

Get a Globally Recognized Education

Australia has one of the best education systems in the world. According to the 2025 United Nations Human Development Report’s Education Index, Australia’s education system ranks ninth globally, and Australians have the highest expected years of schooling in the world, at 21.1 years. The Australian education system is tightly regulated by the government to maintain its high standards. A key piece of legislation, the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act, protects international students in Australia and helps to ensure they receive appropriate academic support.

Australian institutions also consistently rank highly in global education rankings. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, six Australian universities ranked in the top 100, with ten in the top 200. According to the ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities 2025, five Australian universities were in the top 100, and two-thirds of Australia’s public universities featured in the top 500.

Build a Global Career

International students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (every two weeks) during term time, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks and holidays. This provides them with valuable work experience and helps to offset living costs while studying. Note that master’s by research and PhD students enjoy unlimited work rights throughout their studies.

Whether the student applies for work in Australia with a Temporary Graduate visa after finishing their studies, or works elsewhere, an Australian education can open many doors. The government’s Australian Global Alumni program also helps graduates connect with other alumni who can support their professional growth.

Australia Is a Great Place to Live

From its high quality of life to its enviable weather, here are just a few reasons why Australia’s a great place to study.

A High Quality of Life

Australian cities consistently rank amongst the world’s most liveable, ranking highly for their residents’ overall quality of life. Plus, the entire country’s quality of education, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, and government services consistently rank well above international averages.

Warm Weather Year-Round

One of the biggest perks of studying in Australia is its weather! Australia is warm all year, but the actual weather typically varies greatly between regions. The northern parts of Australia have a more tropical climate, which is hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter. The southern parts are cooler, with mild summers and cool, rainy winters.

Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, when it’s summer in Australia, it’s winter in Canada, the US, India, China, and other countries above the equator.

Effective Transportation Networks

Australia’s extensive public transportation system makes it easy for students to get around. All major towns in Australia have reliable, affordable public bus networks. Train lines also connect the five largest cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. Trams, ferries, and light-rail systems are also available in some of the major cities for longer-distance travel. All major cities also have airports with regularly scheduled flights.

Many tertiary institutions subsidize the cost of local public transportation for their students. In fact, post-secondary students can save up to 50% when they purchase their transit passes with a valid student ID.

All Australian cities and towns offer taxi services, but students can also use ride share apps.

Which Students May Work in Ireland?

International students usually enter Ireland with Immigration Stamp 2 permission. As an international student, you may only work while your Stamp 2 visa is valid.

Register and obtain your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card within 90 days of arriving.

Be in a full-time programme that’s at least one year long, and at or above NFQ Level 7.

Work toward a qualification recognized by the Minister for Education and Skills.

TrustEd Ireland and Programme Eligibility

Your educational institution must be authorized to enrol international students. As of 2025, only institutions with TrustEd Ireland authorization can recruit non-EEA students. This authorization helps to ensure you receive a quality education.

NFQ, Explained

If you’re wondering “what does NFQ Level 7 mean?”, it refers to a specific level of study. Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) has ten levels which outline the skills and knowledge you’ll need to earn a qualification. On the NFQ scale, third-level qualifications, or post-secondary studies, range from levels 6 to 10.

Here’s how post-secondary courses and NFQ levels match up:

Level 6: Advanced Certificates and Higher Certificates

Level 7: Ordinary Bachelor’s Degrees

Level 8: Honours Bachelor’s Degrees and Higher Diplomas

Level 9: Master’s Degrees and Post-Graduate Diplomas

Level 10: Doctoral Degrees (PhD) and Higher Doctorates

Students in courses ranked Level 7 to 10 on the NFQ scale may work while studying in Ireland.

Bonus Resource: If you want to know how your current credentials match up to Irish ones, check out NARIC Ireland’s searchable Foreign Qualifications Database.

How Do I Prepare for and Find Work in Ireland?

Before you start working, you’ll need to get a Personal Public Services Number (PPS Number), and an Irish bank account. The PPS Number is used by your employer to pay you.

If your course is accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), you may already have received a PPS number, so check your acceptance package.

Understanding Irish Taxes

As a student working in Ireland, you’ll be subject to the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) income tax system. Your employer will deduct taxes from your paycheck automatically using your PPS Number. However, you may be eligible for some tax credits as a student worker, which reduces the amount of tax you’ll pay.

On-Campus Jobs

Many international students like the convenience of working on campus. You might find work in the library, as a research or teaching assistant, in administration, or with a private on-campus business. To find on-campus jobs, check your campus’ student services office or website.

Off-Campus Jobs

There are several platforms designed for students and part-time workers to find jobs:

parttime.ie – Specializes in flexible, part-time positions ideal for students

StudentJob.ie – A dedicated platform for student employment opportunities

GradIreland – Excellent for internships and graduate-level opportunities

What if I Have an Internship?

Your academic institution must ensure the work placements complement your programme.

How Much Can I Work?

For most of the year, if you’re a student with Stamp 2, you may work up to 20 hours per week. However, during the summer months (June 1 to September 30) and from December 15 to January 15, you can work up to 40 hours per week.

Can I Work in Ireland After Graduating?

You may be eligible to stay in Ireland after you graduate under the Irish Third Level Graduate Scheme if you graduate from a course ranked Level 8, 9, or 10 on the NFQ scale.

The Third Level Graduate Scheme allows non-EU post-secondary graduates to look for work or apply for a work permit. The length of time you’re approved for may depend on the course you’ve completed.

Important: You must apply for the Third Level Graduate Scheme within six months of receiving your final exam results.

Level 8 Graduates

Generally, non-EEA students who graduate from a Level 8 course may stay in Ireland for up to 12 months.

Level 9 or 10 Graduates

Graduates with a Level 9 or 10 course may stay for up to a total of 24 months. Your visa will be granted as an initial 12-month period, which can be renewed for an additional 12 months. If you’re accepted to the Third Level Graduate Scheme, you may work full-time (up to 40 hours/week).

In 2026, Ireland is focusing on retaining talent in “critical skills” areas like AI, Sustainable Energy, and Healthcare. If you find a job in these sectors, you may be able to transition from a Stamp 1G to a Critical Skills Employment Permit.

Remember: You’ll have limited time to find a job after finishing your course, so we recommend applying for jobs well before graduating.

With Ireland’s status as a tech hub on the rise, there are lots of great job opportunities for international student graduates, especially those in STEM fields.

If you’re an international student starting your study abroad journey, you might be curious about potential cultural differences and what adapting to a new culture might be like. Experiencing cultural differences can help you to understand other cultures and develop a valuable, global outlook. However, adjusting to a new culture won’t happen overnight, which is why we’ve put together our top four tips for making this transition a smooth one for you.

1. Reduce Stress

Adjusting to a new culture while studying abroad can be stressful. Exercising is a great way to stimulate the release of dopamine, which can help to reduce stress. Going to the gym, practicing yoga, or joining one of your school’s intramural teams are all effective ways to relieve stress.

You can also join a student club on campus or discover new hobbies. According to recent research on stress management, socialization increases oxytocin, a hormone that decreases anxiety levels and makes us feel more confident in our ability to cope with stress. Many academic institutions run recreational sports leagues and clubs, so be sure to check out your school’s website for ideas.

You can also consider implementing these tips into your daily routine to help manage stress:

Follow online workout routines on YouTube

Join student clubs (many schools offer these both in-person and through platforms like Facebook and Discord)

Listen to music

Learn how to cook new meals by watching online tutorials

2. Keep an Open Mind

Never underestimate the power of perspective. When interacting with people in your new country, ensure you keep an open mind. Consider how their culture and background may influence their behaviour. This is critical when moving into a new environment. These strategies allow you to put yourself in their shoes and gain perspective on things that may not initially make sense to you.

Moving to a new country and adapting to a new culture doesn’t always mean you have to alter your customs and values. But just as you want your classmates to understand and embrace who you are and how you live, you should aim to do the same.

3. Be Curious and Ask Questions

When adapting to a new culture, it’s natural to have many questions and be curious about your surroundings. Whether you want to know where the best hiking spots and breakfast joints are, or you’re wondering what a particular phrase means, don’t be shy about asking questions or seeking help when you need it. You’ll find that many people are eager to share their knowledge with others.

Tip: Making yourself understood and understanding others in a new language often requires clarification, repeating, and rephrasing.

4. Seek Support from Other International Students

During your study abroad journey, you’ll be surrounded by other international students who might be sharing similar experiences as they adjust. Chatting about the local culture and ways to adjust to it can help you better understand your new country and its residents.

Many universities and colleges offer mentoring programs that match upper-year international students with first-year students from the same country or region. This allows the incoming student to learn about their host country’s culture, ask questions, and meet new friends. Most colleges and universities also offer international student clubs and peer mentoring programs through their international student offices. These clubs and programs typically host meetings both in person and virtually throughout the school year, allowing international students to form a community.

Adjusting to a new culture is an ongoing process that requires time. Be patient during this journey, and be patient with yourself. Incorporating these tips will help you adjust to your new culture and ensure a positive start to your study abroad experience.

There are many reasons to bring your family with you while studying abroad. Maybe you’re in secondary school and want to bring your parents along. Or, perhaps you’re a mature student who wants to bring your partner or children. The good news is that it’s often possible to do so! We’ll explore how to study abroad while bringing your family to Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Australia

Australia is a friendly destination with an excellent standard of living and strong education system. It offers international students quality academic institutions, cultural diversity, and a streamlined process for student visas.

You must declare your family members in your student visa application, even if they don’t plan to travel with you immediately. Otherwise, they will not be eligible for a student visa to join you in Australia. If this happens, your dependents can apply separately through ImmiAccount as subsequent entrants.

Who Are Eligible Dependents?

Your spouse or de facto partner

Your dependent children under 18 years old

Your partner’s dependent children under 18 years old

Family members who are not eligible dependents (like your siblings or parents) cannot apply with you. They must apply separately for a shorter-term visitor visa (subclass 600).

Which Students Can Bring Dependents

All Subclass 500 Student visa applicants may include their eligible family members in their initial application. There are no course-level restrictions on bringing dependents.

Financial Requirements

You’ll also need to show sufficient financial capacity to support your family. As of 2025, the primary applicant must show access to at least A$29,710 for living expenses, plus travel costs, and additional cost-of-living amounts for each dependent and school costs if applicable.

The minimum additional funds for accompanying dependents are:

Spouse or de facto partner: A$10,394

Dependent child: A$4,449 per child

Annual school costs: A$13,502 per child aged 5 to 17

Canada

Interested in studying in Canada? It’s renowned for its friendly people, safe and multicultural cities, and high-quality education system. Canada welcomes international students and their dependents, making it a top choice for international students.

Who Are Eligible Dependents?

Your spouse or common-law partner (a person who has lived with you in a conjugal relationship for at least one year).

Your dependent children, who must be:

Under 22 years old and not have a spouse or common-law partner,
or

22 years old or older, financially dependent on their parents since before the age of 22, and unable to support themselves due to a mental or physical condition.

Non-dependent family members (like your siblings or parents) can apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), but must apply separately.

Which Students Can Bring Dependents

All study permit applicants (undergraduate, college, graduate) may apply to bring their eligible dependents.

Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) eligibility is restricted: Only spouses/partners of students in master’s, doctoral, or select professional degree programs (e.g., Medicine, Law, Pharmacy) are eligible for an SOWP.

Spouses/partners of students in all other programs (undergraduate, college) are generally not eligible for an SOWP but can apply to join the student visa holder with a Temporary Resident Visa.

Application Requirements

You must submit your dependents’ visa applications online at the same time you apply for your study permit. Depending on your circumstances, your dependents may be eligible for a:

Note: If you don’t submit your family members’ applications at the same time that you apply, they may not be able to enter Canada with you.

Financial Requirements

You must show you have enough money to cover the living expenses for yourself and all dependents for at least the first year, based on the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) rates. Note that if you’re studying in Quebec, your proof of finances criteria is different.

Here are some proof of funds amounts for students in programs outside of Quebec (it scales up with every additional dependent):

Student Only: C$22,895

Student + 1 Dependent: C$28,502

Student + 2 Dependents: C$35,040

Note: These amounts are effective for study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025, and are subject to annual change.

Ireland

Ireland is a leading global education hub with a thriving tech sector, and a high quality of life. Plus, many of its higher education institutions are known for their high international graduate employment rates. However, its immigration rules for international students’ family members are more restrictive.

Generally, non-EEA international students on a Stamp 2 permission (which covers bachelor’s, master’s, and most other full-time study courses) are not entitled to bring dependent family members.

Who Are Eligible Dependents?

The following people typically qualify as immediate family for reunification:

Your spouse or civil partner.

Your de facto partner (proof of a cohabiting relationship similar to marriage for at least two years may be required).

Your unmarried children under 18 years of age.

Note: Children aged 18 to 23 are eligible only if they are in full-time education and financially dependent on the main student visa applicant.

If other family members want to visit you in Ireland, they may do so for up to 90 days. Depending on their nationality, they may need a visa:

Non-Visa-Required Nationalities: These visitors must still present their valid passport and relevant travel documents upon arrival.

Visa-Required Nationalities: These visitors must apply for a Short-Stay ‘C’ Tourist visa.

Important: Family members on a visitor visa (Stamp C) cannot stay longer than 90 days or switch to a long-term residence permission.

Who Can Apply for Family Reunification?

Only non-EEA students holding a specific long-term permission or funding arrangement are eligible to apply for family reunification:

PhD Students (Level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications or NFQ)

Students pursuing an accredited doctorate program.

Government-Sponsored Students

Students enrolled in a program agreed between the Irish State and another State (e.g., certain scholarship programs) where the student and dependents are sufficiently funded for all expenses.

For all other student categories, including most bachelor’s (NFQ Level 7 or 8) and master’s (NFQ Level 9) degree students, family members must apply for a visa in their own right, and the student cannot act as a sponsor for family reunification under this permission type (Stamp 2).

Key Requirements when Bringing Dependents

You and your dependents must meet strict criteria, including:

The UK

The UK offers international students a world-class education, flexible course options, and plenty of post-study work opportunities. Students can expect to learn from talented instructors at high-quality academic institutions while enjoying a great quality of life.

Who Are Eligible Dependents?

UK Student visa holders’ dependents must be one of the following:

Your husband, wife, or civil partner

Your unmarried partner (common-law)

Your child under 18 years old (including if they were born in the UK during your stay)

If you’re under 18 and applying for a Child Student visa, you aren’t eligible to bring dependents with you (like your parents). They must apply for their own Parent of a Child Student visa.

Do you have other family members who want to visit? While they can’t live with you long-term, they may apply for a Standard Visitor visa. These visas allow non-dependent family members to visit for up to 90 days.

Current Dependent Visa Eligibility

As of January 2024, dependent visas are only available to the eligible dependents of select Student visa holders. They include::

Postgraduate research students in courses lasting nine months or longer (research-based degrees like a PhD, doctorate, or a master’s by research)

Government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months

To prove you’re financially ready to study in the UK, each Student visa applicant must show access to the following amounts for up to nine months (an academic year):

The US

The United States has the largest international student population in the world for a reason! The US is home to some of the best universities in the world, with cutting-edge research and technology.

As Canada’s international student program evolves, understanding its current application requirements is really important. Before diving into some common do’s and don’ts when applying for a Canadian student visa, let’s define two key terms:

A Study Permit is the document that allows you to stay and study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.

A Student Visa (which is a type of Temporary Resident visa) is required for citizens of certain countries and is what allows you to legally enter Canada.

These terms are often used interchangeably, but each refers to specific things. Thankfully, you don’t need to apply for them separately. Once your study permit application is approved, you’ll be issued a visa automatically (if one is required for your nationality).

This post is provided as information and is not legal advice. Study permit guidelines and processes are subject to change. Please visit the Government of Canada’s website for the most up-to-date information, or contact a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant for guidance.

Application Document Update: PALs and TALs

Many study permit applicants must obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) or Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL) from the province or territory where they plan to study before applying for a study permit. Your academic institution will provide your PAL/TAL once you’ve paid your tuition deposit. Check your program application portal and the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for more info.

Note: As of January 1, 2026, students pursuing master’s and doctoral programs at a public DLI will no longer need a PAL or TAL for their study permit application.

Things to Do when Applying for a Canadian Student Visa

1. Prove You Can Cover Your Expenses

To show you’re financially prepared to live and study in Canada, you must prove you have access to enough money for:

Tuition fees (if your course is longer than a year, proof of payment of your first year’s tuition).

Your travel costs to and from Canada for yourself and any family coming with you.

The cost of living for yourself and any family members accompanying you. This is sometimes referred to as “proof of funds.”

The minimum proof of funds amount is measured against the current cost of living in Canada. On September 1, 2025, the minimum amount rose to C$22,895 for a single applicant studying outside of Quebec. It’s important to remember this doesn’t include your tuition or travel costs—you’ll provide separate proof of payment for these.

If you’re studying in Quebec, you may have to show a different financial capacity amount. (Starting on January 1, 2026, it will be C$24,617.) To get a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (Certificat d’acceptation du Québec), which you’ll need for your study permit, follow the guidelines from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration.

Tip: An easy way to show proof of financial support is by using a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from an eligible Canadian financial institution.

Sharing all your finances clearly is essential, as the perception of inadequate funds is a common reason study permits are rejected.

2. Apply for a Co-op Work Permit Simultaneously (If Needed)

If your program includes a mandatory co-op program, internship, or work placement term that takes up 50% or less of your total study program, you must apply for a co-op work permit at the same time as your study permit. This permit is separate from your study permit, but is typically free and allows you to gain valuable and often paid experience in your field of study. To apply for your co-op work permit, you’ll need a letter from your college or university confirming the mandatory work placement.

3. Include a Strong Letter of Explanation

While not always required, your Letter of Explanation (LOE) is your chance to directly address the visa officer and convince them you understand and will respect the terms of your study permit. For example, if you have missing documents, took a leave from your studies, or have a conditional offer of acceptance, you may need to submit an LOE.

When writing your LOE, talk about:

Any Unusual Circumstances: LOEs are less about academic goals and more about explaining why your application or study path might look different. Use it to respond to specific concerns, like if you have any expired documents, or why you’re applying to study in Canada from outside your country of residence. You might also need to write an LOE if the immigration officer who initially reviewed your application has questions or concerns.

Ties to Your Home Country: Discuss your strong ties to your home country, whether it’s family, property, employment, or financial assets. While IRCC acknowledges that some students plan to stay after graduation to work in Canada, it’s important that the primary reason you’re holding a student visa is so you can study.

Financial Clarity: Briefly and clearly summarize your financial capacity.

Your Post-Study Plan: Explain what you plan to do after your studies and how your Canadian education will benefit your career.

Learn what goes into Letters of Explanation and how you can write a great one.

4. Keep Organized Copies of Your Documentation

To avoid last-minute panic or issues upon arrival, keep a dedicated digital and physical folder for your application documents. You may need to show some or all of them when you first arrive in Canada. Documents to have on hand should include your:

Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)

Port of entry Letter of Introduction (sent by the visa office when they approved your study permit)

Passport (valid for the entire study term)

Proof of Funds

English/French Language Test results

Letter of Explanation (LOE)

Reference letters, if requested

Medical exam results, if needed

Valid travel document (green card, electronic travel authorization, or visitor visa)

Travel Smart: Keep physical copies of essential documents (like your LOA, passport, and financial proof) in your carry-on baggage when travelling to Canada. You will need them to get your student visa at the port of entry.

Don’t Do These Things when Applying for a Canadian Student Visa

1. Don’t Submit Incomplete or Unofficial Documents

An incomplete study permit application is grounds for immediate rejection or significant delays. Create a checklist and double-check every requirement. All documents must be clear, official, and translated by a certified translator (if not in English or French) with an accompanying affidavit.

Key Documents Include:

Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) unless exempt

Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from your DLI

Proof of Financial Support

Proof of Identity and travel history (all used passport pages)

Completed and validated application forms

2. Don’t Be Unprepared for the Interview at the Port of Entry

Even if you are approved for a study permit, the final decision to issue it is made by the immigration officer when you arrive in Canada. Be prepared to clearly and confidently share:

Why you chose your specific program and institution

How you will fund your entire stay

What your test scores are

Your plan to return home after graduation

Your primary purpose for coming to Canada must be to study. If you fail to convince the officer of your intent, you risk having your study permit denied, even with a previous approval.

Check out our guide on how to prepare for the Canadian student visa interview.

3. Don’t Focus on Permanent Residency at the Port of Entry

While Canada’s immigration system offers pathways like the Post-Graduation Work Permit program (PGWP) and Express Entry, the main purpose of your study permit is, well, to allow you to study. So, it’s best to state clearly that you plan to return to your home country after your studies. Leave exploring work visa options until after you’ve completed your studies and met the terms of your study permit.

Always verify your study program’s eligibility for programs like PGWP with your DLI and against the latest IRCC rules. PGWP eligibility is subject to change.

4. Don’t Apply at the Last Minute

Canadian student visa processing times vary based on your country of residence, application volume, and the time of year (May and September are especially busy). Standard processing times can range from 4 weeks to over 16 weeks.

It’s wise to apply as soon as you receive your LOA and PAL/TAL, ideally at least three to six months before your program’s start date. This extra time is helpful if extra documents are requested or if you need to submit a new application after a rejection.

We hope this will help you navigate the current Canadian student visa application process. By following the new requirements, especially around PALs/TALs and the updated proof of financial capacity, you’ll set yourself up for a successful study abroad experience. Best of luck!

For many of us, our pets are our family, and the thought of leaving them behind while you study abroad can be unbearable. Depending on where you’ll be studying and what type of animal you have, you’ll likely be able to bring your pet while studying abroad. Below, we look at the regulations for importing your pet into Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Note: While the fees and regulations noted below are accurate as of November 2025, they can change regularly. Check official government websites for the most up-to-date amounts and guidelines.

Australia

Australia has some of the world’s strictest pet import regulations to protect its unique ecosystem and remain rabies-free. Bringing your pet requires careful planning, as the process can take at least six months to complete.

First, your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip before vaccination and vaccinated against rabies. A Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) must be performed at an approved laboratory at least 180 days and no more than 24 months before export for pets coming from approved countries and territories where rabies is absent or well-controlled.

Pets coming from most countries require an import permit from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). You can apply for one through the Biosecurity Import Conditions system. Most permits take from 20 to 40 business days to be issued. Import permit fees are charged per animal in a consignment: the first cat or dog is most expensive, and subsequent animals are a little less expensive.

A consignment refers to cats and/or dogs that are sent to Australia at the same time from the same country of origin, with the same importer and exporter details listed on the import permit.

All pets must be quarantined for at least 10 days at a government facility near Melbourne. You’ll need to pay a range of fees to cover your pet’s stay, including a reservation charge of A$269, an importation charge of A$1,078, and additional fees for quarantine accommodation (A$530 for 10 days). Pets that don’t complete identity verification may require 30 days of quarantine instead.

Visit the Australian Government’s website for more information about importing pets, including step-by-step guides based on your pet type and country of origin.

Canada

Canada has relatively straightforward import requirements which focus on rabies prevention. If you’re bringing your pet to Canada, you’ll need the proper paperwork at the border to meet Canada’s import requirements. Arriving without these documents increases your risk of experiencing border delays, or worse, your pet being denied entry to Canada.

For most countries, a valid rabies vaccination certificate is the most critical piece of documentation. The certificate must be in English or French, issued by a licensed veterinarian, and clearly identify the animal and vaccine details. While not mandatory, it is strongly advised that all pets traveling internationally have a 15-digit, ISO 11784 compliant microchip. A veterinary health certificate issued close to the date of travel is also highly recommended.

Good news for pet owners: no quarantine is imposed on your pet when entering Canada if all import regulations are met.

Use the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website and their Automated Import Reference System to find out what you need before travelling with your pet.

Ireland

Ireland generally follows European Union regulations for pet travel, with some additional requirements. Your pet must travel to Ireland with you, or arrive within five days of your arrival. If you cannot meet this timeline, the move becomes “commercial,” which means stricter requirements and higher costs. If travelling to Ireland from a non-EU country, you must give notice of your intention to bring your pet at least 24 hours before your departure time.

Your cat, dog, or ferret must be microchipped before it is vaccinated against rabies, and the microchip must be readable by a device compatible with ISO standard 11785. Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old when it is vaccinated and must wait at least 21 days after vaccination before travel. If traveling from an “unlisted country” not on the EU approved list, your pet must take a rabies antibody test with a 90-day waiting period after the blood draw before completing export paperwork.

Dogs must also be treated for tapeworm between one and five days before arrival in Ireland, unless they’re travelling from Northern Ireland, Finland, Malta, or Norway.

Pets from non-EU countries must enter the Republic of Ireland only through designated airports and ports, and must undergo compliance checks on arrival. You and your pet cannot leave the airport or sea port without completing your compliance check, unless you’re coming from another country in the EU.

For more details on how to enter Ireland with your pet, visit Gov.ie’s Pet Travel page. Or, use the Pet Travel Portal for country-specific guidance.

United Kingdom

Bringing your furry friend to Great Britain (England, Wales, or Scotland) requires careful preparation to maintain the UK’s rabies-free status.

Note that there are different rules and regulations for importing your pet into Northern Ireland.

To enter Great Britain, pets must be microchipped before they get their rabies vaccination. The microchip must meet ISO 11784 and 11785 standards. Dogs and cats also require a valid rabies vaccination at least 21 days after the first vaccination before their arrival. Dogs must be treated for tapeworm no less than 24 hours before and no more than 5 days before arrival, unless coming directly from Finland, Ireland, Malta, or Norway.

If traveling from an “unlisted country” not on the approved list, a blood test is required at least 30 days after rabies vaccination, with a 3-month waiting period before travel. Pets entering the UK must be accompanied by an official veterinary health certificate endorsed by a government veterinarian in their country of origin. Importantly, pets may only arrive as manifest cargo (so, pets cannot travel in the airplane cabin, and must fly in airline-approved crates). To avoid being considered a “commercial” move, your pet must arrive in the UK within five days of your arrival. Pets must also be covered under a “Transfer of Residency” declaration to avoid Customs VAT.

If your pet doesn’t meet these requirements, it may be placed in quarantine for up to four months. If this happens, you must pay for all quarantine costs.

Lastly, you can’t bring some dog breeds, including Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosas, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros to the UK.

Visit the UK Government’s website for detailed information about bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain, including approved travel routes.

United States

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), pets entering the country may be subject to regulation by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in addition to other federal agencies. Depending on which state you’ll be studying abroad in, your pet may also need to meet state-level health requirements.

All dogs must have a completed CDC Dog Import Form, which must be submitted online before arriving in the U.S. The Dog Import Form receipt must also be presented at the port of entry. Dogs must be at least six months old at their time of entry or return to the U.S. They must also have a microchip that’s detectable by a universal scanner.

Specific import requirements vary for pets traveling from a country that’s considered low-risk or high-risk for rabies. Dogs from low-risk countries need a valid rabies vaccination, and must appear healthy upon arrival.

Meanwhile, dogs from high-risk countries with foreign vaccination histories need a valid rabies vaccination and serology titer, a microchip detectable by a universal scanner, and a reservation at a CDC-registered animal care facility for a 28-day quarantine period. They can only enter through specific airports. They must also appear healthy upon arrival.

Good news for cat owners: the CDC requires cats to be healthy to enter the U.S., but cats require no documentation of rabies vaccination (though it’s recommended). While not required by the CDC, airlines may require a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.

Check out the CDC’s website and the CDC Dog Import Form instructions for detailed entry information.
Tips for Working with a Study Abroad Advisor

Working effectively with your local study abroad advisor requires active involvement and clear communication. Here are some key steps to ensure a productive collaboration:

1. Start Early and Stay Committed

The journey to studying abroad begins well before your departure date. Initiate contact with your advisor as early as possible, ideally a year or more in advance. Establish a regular meeting schedule to discuss your progress, address concerns, and receive timely guidance.

To help you choose the right study abroad advisor for you, we’ve come up with five essential questions to ask on our blog.

2. Do Your Homework

Before your initial meeting, do your research ahead of time about potential destinations, programs, and scholarships. This will help you ask the right questions and allow your advisor to provide tailored advice that best fits your needs.

Here are some of our top research tips:

Find study abroad resources online: Explore study abroad websites (including platforms like ApplyBoard!), university websites, and online forums where students share their experiences. This can be a great start to finding a country and program that best suits your needs.

Reach out to international students: Reach out to someone you know who has studied abroad. They can share their own personal experiences and provide unique insights about studying in a foreign country

Attend information sessions: Many universities and study abroad organizations host information sessions or webinars. Attend these sessions to gather firsthand information and have your questions answered by experts.

Look for student-created content: Look for blogs or vlogs created by students who have travelled to the country you want to study in. Their experiences can offer valuable insight into factors to keep in mind when setting your study goals.

Explore program options: Align your research with your academic goals. If you have specific academic interests or career aspirations, explore how your chosen program and destination can help you achieve them.

3. Share Your Study Abroad Goals and Expectations

Be transparent about your goals when studying abroad. Whether you seek cultural immersion, research opportunities, or want to further your career, your advisor can offer guidance that best fits your expectations if they understand exactly what you want to gain from studying abroad.

Ask your study abroad advisor to share their own insights on programs and countries that best suit your goals.

Tip: When your advisor sends you emails or requests for information, be sure to respond to them in a timely manner. Doing so helps you get important updates and guidance right when you need them.

Wondering how to choose the right program? We’ve put together some preliminary steps to help you find a program that best suits your needs on our blog.

4. Stay Informed About Deadlines and Requirements

Navigating the process of studying abroad comes with its fair share of deadlines and requirements, from application deadlines to visa documentation. While your advisor can help you navigate this maze, it’s essential for you to stay informed and proactive.

One helpful way to keep track of your deadlines and documentation is to maintain a detailed spreadsheet in Excel or Google Sheets. Here, you can log the number of applications, along with their deadlines and requirements, ensuring a smooth and organized application process.

5. Have Regular Check-Ins

Keep the lines of communication open with your advisor. Schedule periodic check-ins, even after you’ve landed in your study abroad destination. Share your successes, challenges, as well as any questions or concerns that may arise.

By having regular check-ins, you not only stay connected with your study abroad advisor but also ensure that you receive the necessary support to overcome any challenges that may come your way. This collaborative effort can help you make the most of your study abroad experience.

Here are some helpful tips for effective check-ins:

Schedule regular meetings with your advisor: This could be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on your needs and preferences. Having consistent meetings ensures that important matters aren’t overlooked.

Prepare for check-ins in advance: Before each check-in, take some time to prepare. Make a list of topics or questions you’d like to discuss.

Keep your advisor informed: Let your advisor know about any changes to your plans, such as travel dates, accommodation adjustments, or course selections. Giving timely updates to your advisor will ensure they can give you the best and most accurate guidance possible.

Be open about your experiences: Once you’ve travelled to your destination country, share your achievements, discoveries, and any obstacles you’ve encountered. This information helps your advisor tailor their support to your specific needs.

Know Your Options

Before diving into your preparation journey, it’s important to understand all of the different English proficiency tests available. Tests like Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE), Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), and the Duolingo English Test are some of the most widely accepted examinations worldwide.

Furthermore, each of these tests has its own format, scoring system, and focus, so it’s essential to choose the one that best aligns with your goals.

TOEFL: The TOEFL test assesses English skills in an academic setting. It’s widely accepted by universities and colleges in English-speaking countries.

IELTS: Commonly used for academic and immigration purposes, this test measures your proficiency in real-life communication situations.

Understand The Test Format

Once you’ve chosen the English proficiency test that best fits your goals, it’s important to look into your chosen test’s format. Research the specific sections that you’ll need to prepare for.

Typically, English proficiency tests include the following sections in one form or another:

Reading

Writing

Speaking

Listening

Once you are familiar with the format, take a look at the structure and types of questions you’ll be asked to better prepare yourself. That should give you a strong idea of what to expect, and will help guide the kinds of English words and grammar rules you should be practicing!

Set Clear Goals

After identifying your chosen test’s format, it’s a great idea to set clear and achievable goals for yourself. It can be helpful to ask the following questions:

What is my target score?

What is the deadline for taking the test?

How much time can I dedicate to daily or weekly preparation?

Having answers to these questions will provide you with a roadmap to follow throughout your preparation journey.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Learning a language doesn’t always mean reading textbooks or using flashcards for memorization. Absorbing yourself in English, even in your spare time, is key to learning and understanding the language over time! A structured study plan is key to successful test preparation. Plan time for each section of the test, focusing on your strengths and weaknesses.

Here’s a basic template to get you started:

Listening: Dedicate a portion of your daily study time to listening exercises. Listen to podcasts, watch English-language movies, or take advantage of online resources designed for English learners.

Reading: Develop the habit of reading English books, newspapers, or academic articles. This will help improve your comprehension and vocabulary.

Writing: Practice writing essays or reports regularly. Seek feedback from teachers or native speakers to refine your writing skills.

Speaking: Have conversations with native speakers or language exchange partners. Join English-speaking clubs or online communities to gain confidence in your speaking abilities.

Grammar and Vocabulary: Dedicate some time each day to review grammar rules and expand your vocabulary. For this, flashcards and language learning apps can be very valuable resources!

Study Official Test Materials

One of the most effective ways to prepare for an English proficiency test is by using official test materials. These resources are designed to mimic the format and content of the actual test. Several practice tests are available online, and many of them are free!

The official TOEFL or IELTS practice tests are valuable tools for familiarizing yourself with each exam’s structure and timing. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to understand where you need to improve.

Regularly taking mock tests under timed conditions is a crucial part of your preparation journey. Mock tests not only help you gauge your progress but also prepare you for the test’s format and time constraints. Review your performance after each test to identify areas that may need improvement.

Seek Professional Guidance

If you find yourself struggling with self-study or need personalized guidance, consider enrolling in a test preparation course. Many language schools and online platforms offer extensive courses led by experienced instructors. These courses often include mock tests, targeted exercises, and individualized feedback to help you improve your weak points.

Take a look at a former international student’s list of things to know before studying abroad.

Join Study Groups

Joining a study group can be motivating and helpful. Test takers can discuss strategies, share resources, and provide support to each other. This collaborative approach can make the preparation process more engaging and effective.

Stay Consistent and Adapt

Consistency is key when preparing for an English proficiency test. Stick to your study plan, and be prepared to adapt it as needed. If you notice certain sections need more attention, adjust your schedule accordingly. Remember that progress may not always be linear, so stay persistent and patient.

If you want to study in Canada or the US, we’ve come up with some of our top application tips for international students on our blog.

As the test day approaches, ensure you are well-prepared for other aspects as well. This includes the test location, time, and items you’re allowed to bring into the testing center. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep the day before the test, and eat a healthy meal to stay alert and focused!

We hope this guide helps you prepare for your English language proficiency test. Preparing for one is a journey that requires dedication, patience, and the right resources. Best of luck!
