<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&#8217;re planning to study abroad for a short period through a practicum or clinical placement, for research, or an in-country language study program, you might be eligible for support through the </span><a href="https://www.education.gov.au/cheung-kong-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This joint initiative by the Australian government and the </span><a href="https://www.cki.com.hk/english/hongKong/home/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cheung Kong Group</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> supports both outbound Australian students and inbound (international) students from select Asian countries.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students won&#8217;t receive aid directly from this program. Instead, it provides funding to eligible Australian academic institutions for short-term study opportunities. Every year, universities apply for grants, which they use to fund scholarships or other financial aid.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&#8217;re an international student from one of the following locations, and plan to study in Australia for at least two weeks and at most one semester, you could be eligible for one of these scholarships:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Brunei Darussalam</span></li>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Research Training Program (RTP)</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Domestic and overseas students enrolled in a higher degree by research at an eligible higher education provider (or HEP) in Australia are eligible for the </span><a href="https://www.education.gov.au/research-block-grants/research-training-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Research Training Program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Every year, this program provides block grants to post-secondary institutions to support students enrolled in research doctorate and research master’s degrees.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&#8217;re an international student who&#8217;d like to apply for an RTP scholarship, you must contact your HEP for more information and application details. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The RTP aims to:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Offer flexible funding options for eligible domestic and international students</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Contribute to cross-sector collaboration between HEPs, industry, and other research end-users</span></li>

Over the 2025 academic year, they provided 1,551 long-term Australia Awards scholarships to students from 55 countries.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These include:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia Awards Scholarships are open to postgraduate and undergraduate international students. One of their key requirements is that these students leave Australia for at least two years after graduating. It’s early in the morning and you just woke up. What does your usual morning routine look like?</h2>
<p><strong>A)</strong> I&#8217;ll start the day with a brisk morning jog or hitting the beach! Then, I&#8217;ll grab a latte.</p>
<p><strong>B)</strong> I like to enjoy the fresh air with a forest hike before I fill up on pancakes and maple syrup.</p>
<p><strong>C)</strong> I like my mornings calm; I’ll grab a coffee while enjoying the sunrise, and have a full breakfast of fried eggs, potatoes, and sausage.</p>
<p><strong>D)</strong> My mornings start with a cup of tea or coffee while reading the newspaper. I savour the moment and enjoy the quiet.</p>
<p><strong>E)</strong> I kick off the day with coffee and a scroll through the news or social media. Then, I might hit the gym for a quick yoga session.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-18076 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass-300x300.png" alt="An illustration of an hourglass." width="266" height="266" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/hourglass.png 321w" sizes="(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px" /></p>
<h2>2. You enjoyed your morning so much that you lost track of time and are running late to work. What’s your plan of action?</h2>
<p><strong>A)</strong> I won’t stress too much. I’ll make up for lost time by working efficiently and grabbing a coffee to keep me going.</p>
<p><strong>B)</strong> I’ll rush to work and profusely apologize for being late. I’ll make up for it by staying a bit late and ensuring I’m super productive throughout the day.</p>
<p><strong>C)</strong> I’ll hurry up. Once I’m there, I’ll crack a joke or two to lighten the mood or have a friendly chat to diffuse the situation.</p>
<p><strong>D)</strong> I’ll rush to work and apologize for my tardiness. I’ll spend the rest of my time focusing on getting my work done, but I&#8217;ll also come in early tomorrow to make up for lost time.</p>
<p><strong>E)</strong> I’ll hurry to work and send a quick text to inform my coworkers, making sure to catch up on missed work when I get there. I’ll make up for it by putting in extra effort.</p>

Hurray, it’s lunchtime! What are your plans and what’s on the menu?</h2>
<p><strong>aA </strong>I’m heading to a local café or BBQ spot for a relaxed lunch with workmates, maybe grabbing a classic meat pie or tasty seafood dish!</p>
<p><strong>B) </strong>I might go for a quick bite at a local diner, or grab a poutine or hearty sandwich while exploring the city.</p>
<p><strong>C) </strong>I’ll head to a cozy pub for a comforting meal with a few friends. I’m ordering some stew or a roast.</p>
<p><strong>D) </strong>My lunchtime will be spent in a local tea room or pub by myself, and I’ll order some soup or fish and chips.</p>
<p><strong>E) </strong>If there’s time left, I&#8217;ll grab some takeout—maybe a burger or a salad—before heading back to work. Otherwise, snacks will keep me going.</p>

Oh no! Your coworker accidentally spills their coffee on your shirt. What do you do?</h2>
<p><strong>A) </strong>No worries, accidents happen! I’ll laugh it off and try to clean up the spill while cracking a few jokes.</p>
<p><strong>B) </strong>It’s okay, accidents happen. I’ll reassure my coworker, grab a paper towel to clean it up, and carry on with my day.</p>
<p><strong>C) </strong>Not a bother! I’ll brush it off with a smile and move on.</p>
<p><strong>D) </strong>I might say something like “Oh dear, never mind”, and sort it out. Besides, I always keep a spare shirt with me I can quickly put on.</p>
<p><strong>E) </strong>I’ll brush it off, downplay the inconvenience, and take care of it without dwelling on the accident.</p>

<h2>What is an MBA?</h2>
<p>A Master of Business Administration degree, also known as an MBA, is an internationally recognized degree which focuses on key skills for senior business and management executives. The <a href="https://www.mba.com/explore-programs/mba-programs/what-is-the-history-of-the-mba" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first MBA program</a> was offered by Harvard University in 1908. In the century since, it has become one of the world&#8217;s most popular professional degree programs.</p>
<p>This credential is most often offered in English and usually takes two years to complete as a full-time student. However, it’s possible to enrol in a single-year MBA program, provided you&#8217;re prepared for an accelerated, intense study journey. You may also complete an MBA as a part-time student. Or, if you&#8217;re mid-career and have management experience, an <a href="https://www.mba.com/explore-programs/mba-programs/what-is-an-executive-mba" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive MBA program</a> (EMBA) might be a better fit.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-11419 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/illustration-of-a-checklist-150x150.png" alt="Illustration of an application checklist." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/illustration-of-a-checklist-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/illustration-of-a-checklist-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/illustration-of-a-checklist-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/illustration-of-a-checklist.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>What Are Some MBA Admission Requirements?</h2>
<p>While we&#8217;ve shared some general MBA admission requirements below, specific requirements may differ by institution, or even from program to program. As you narrow down your options, be sure to check individual MBA admissions pages for a full list.</p>
<h4>Are you ready to pursue an MBA? Most degree candidates require:</h4>
<ul>
<li>An undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.</li>
<li>Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results.</li>
<li>Some programs require a minimum undergraduate GPA, often an average of at least 3.0 or B in the final two years of undergraduate study.</li>
<li>Relevant work experience (often 3–5 years).</li>
<li>If neither the applicant&#8217;s undergraduate studies nor their relevant work experience were in the language of instruction, proof of language proficiency via IELTS, TOEFL, or other approved language assessment.</li>
</ul>
<h4>Applicants may also need to provide:</h4>
<ul>
<li>Personal essays or video interviews</li>
<li>A statement of interest</li>
<li>A recent resume</li>
<li>Two or more reference letters</li>
<li>Official academic transcripts</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Note:</strong> Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you a seat in the program. Entry into popular MBA programs can be very competitive.</p>
<blockquote><p>Learn about the <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/gre-vs-gmat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">differences between the GMAT and GRE</a>, and who should take each test.</p></blockquote>

<h2>Why Get an MBA?</h2>
<p>Everyone&#8217;s reasons to pursue an MBA are a little different. It might be your path to higher earning potential, or the first step toward a career in a new field. Here are some popular reasons that international students decide to take an MBA program.</p>
<h3>Strengthen Your Leadership Skills</h3>
<p>Students who enrol in an MBA program are generally bright, driven, and assertive people. These folks can be inspiring classmates, but challenges may arise during group projects if everyone wants to be the team captain. By working through project roadblocks and finding suitable compromises, you&#8217;ll gain effective leadership and conflict resolution experience.</p>
<p>Ultimately, working in a group during class can help you build stronger communication skills and motivational skills. Completing an MBA also provides you with credibility in the eyes of potential employers. It shows other industry professionals your dedication to the industry and your expansive range of knowledge.</p>
<h3>Build a Global Network</h3>
<p>Your classes will be led by highly-qualified instructors and filled with like-minded individuals who also want to become innovators and leaders. Plus, many MBA degrees attract a truly global audience. In 2024, <a href="https://rankings.ft.com/rankings/2951/mba-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">between 35% and 98% of the MBA classes</a> at the world&#8217;s top 20 business schools were international students!</p>
<p>By taking an MBA, you&#8217;ll challenge yourself, while learning from your peers and building cross-cultural communication skills. This network of fellow students could be incredibly useful to you whether you&#8217;re looking for a new job or someone to brainstorm ideas with as a co-founder. Plus, through formal opportunities like work placements and informal opportunities like events and <a href="https://www.bschools.org/faq/what-is-a-typical-mba-curriculum#:~:text=Alumni%20Networking%20and%20Other%20Reasons" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alumni networks</a>, the institution you attend can connect you with established professionals in your community and beyond. Other alumni can become angel investors, mentors, business partners, and more, and your status as fellow alumni can open doors to opportunities which might not be available otherwise.</p>
<h3>Expand Your Career Opportunities</h3>
<p>Many international students pursue an MBA to become eligible for new careers. And, having an MBA gives you a better chance of securing a leadership role with a higher salary. In fact, a 2022 Graduate Management Admissions Council survey found that the <a href="https://fortune.com/education/articles/mba-grads-reliably-earn-a-six-figure-salary-in-these-6-industries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average starting salary for an MBA graduate was US$120,000</a>—more than US$40,000 higher than an average bachelor&#8217;s degree holder.</p>
<p>If climbing the corporate ladder isn&#8217;t for you, that&#8217;s okay. Many students who pursue an MBA plan to apply what they learn to build their own company. There&#8217;s a historic precedent here: <a href="https://www.mbacentral.org/ceos-with-an-mba-degree/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">many Fortune 500 CEOs and founders</a> are MBA grads. This is not to say earning an MBA will guarantee you&#8217;ll build a top-tier company right after graduation! However, this degree can still open many doors from a networking angle while teaching you key skills: from pitching to funding networks to marketing your start-up.</p>
<p>Your enhanced skill set can also benefit your current employer. If you&#8217;re considering an MBA degree because it will qualify you for a more senior role at your company, think about discussing your studies with your direct leader. Some companies will support their employees&#8217; upskilling, and offer benefits like partial leave or funding toward the course.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The United States of America, commonly known as the US or USA, is a country made up of fifty states spread across the North American continent. The country is located between Canada and Mexico, and its capital city, Washington, D.C., borders the states of Maryland and Virginia. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The US has a total population of over </span><a href="https://www.census.gov/popclock/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">335 million people</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It is also culturally diverse and Americans speak over 300 languages, although English is the only official language.  The country is governed by a democratic government, meaning rules are exercised by citizens through elected representatives.  </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Why Study in the US?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The US is frequently ranked as the world’s most popular destination for international students. And, as the most represented country in Times Higher Education&#8217;s (THE) </span><a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2024/world-ranking#:~:text=The%20US%20is%20the%20most,%2C%20overtaking%20China%20(86)." target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2024 World University rankings</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, its universities are some of the best on the planet. Also, American institutions claim the top three university spots in the world in the U.S. News and World Report&#8217;s </span><a href="https://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/rankings" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2024–2025 Best Global Universities rankings</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">!  </span></p>

Campuses also offer a range of state-of-the-art facilities and resources for research opportunities. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Explore American Cultures  </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The US is often referred to as a ‘melting pot,’ meaning that people from diverse cultures and ethnicities form a unified community. American culture has been influenced by various groups, with each one contributing unique customs, traditions, and perspectives across different regions within the US. Whether you&#8217;re exploring natural wonders, iconic landmarks, or local customs, the US provides endless opportunities to enjoy its multifaceted charm.  </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Increased Career Opportunities </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Studying in the US is a great way for international students to prepare for their careers. A degree from an institution in the US is often highly regarded by employers worldwide, and many US-based institutions offer international students internship opportunities where they can develop practical skills. Furthermore, studying in the US allows for international students to network with professors, classmates, and industry leaders to gain access to job opportunities and professional advice. </span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">How Does the Education System Work in the US?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The American education system is divided into different stages: early childhood education, primary education, secondary education, and post-secondary education. Post-secondary education includes undergraduate and postgraduate studies. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Types of Schools</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the US, early, primary, and secondary education are provided through a variety of schooling options. These include public, private, charter, boarding, and religious schools. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most students attend public institutions, which are free and funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Public schools generally serve residents, although foreign national children living in the US with an </span><a href="https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/guide/f-1/f-1-kindergarten-through-grade-12#:~:text=Only%20schools%20certified%20by%20the,grade%20nine%E2%80%93grade%2012)." target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">eligible immigration status</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> may also enrol.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Early, Primary, and Secondary Education</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children in early education attend preschool or kindergarten between the ages of three and five. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They then go on to primary education at an elementary school. Primary education lasts from grades one to five, or one to six, depending on the school district. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Secondary education is divided into two stages. Middle school (also known as junior high) is composed of grades six to eight, or seven to eight, depending on the school district. High school starts at grade 9 and ends at grade 12, and it is the last stage of schooling before attending a college or university.    </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Post-Secondary Education </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Post-secondary education in the US includes both college and university education at public or private institutions. These institutions offer a range of programs from associate degrees to doctoral degrees. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students can choose to attend a community college, college, or university. Community colleges typically offer two-year associate degrees and postsecondary certificates. Colleges and universities offer undergraduate (bachelor’s), graduate (master’s), and doctoral programs focused on specific fields of study.  </span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do International Students Need a Visa to Study in the US? </span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students of all ages typically need an </span><a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/study/student-visa.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">F-1 visa</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to study in the United States. To obtain an F-1 visa, students must first apply and be accepted by a </span><a href="https://www.ice.gov/sevis" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Student and Exchange Visitor Program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (SEVP)-approved school in the US.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What’s the Cost of Living in the US?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The cost of living in the US can vary depending on where you choose to live. Many cities along the coasts in states like New York or California can be more expensive, while other areas such as Missouri, Montana, and Iowa tend to be more affordable. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tuition </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The cost of studying in the US varies by institution, level of study, and program type. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees are generally more expensive than humanities, social sciences, and other liberal arts programs. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the </span><a href="https://research.collegeboard.org/trends/college-pricing" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">College Board</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, international undergraduate tuition fees can range from US$20,000 to US$50,000 per year, with higher costs for professional degrees such as medicine.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Housing</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Accommodation costs vary based on the type of housing. Many students opt to live on-campus during their first year to ease their transition. Housing options include traditional dormitories with shared facilities and apartment-style residences with private bedrooms and shared kitchens.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2023, </span><a href="https://www.collegeraptor.com/paying-for-college/articles/questions-answers/whats-the-average-dorm-cost/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">on-campus housing costs</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> ranged from US$500 to US$3,500 per month, with higher costs in metropolitan areas and at private institutions. <h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Living Expenses</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students must budget for housing, food, transportation, and daily expenses, which are typically higher in major cities and vary based on personal lifestyle. International students should budget for groceries, utilities (if living off-campus), phones, textbooks, laundry, transportation, and recreational activities. Planning to get around by public transit? Some institutions include a public bus pass with their student fees. Below are some </span><a href="https://www.mastersportal.com/articles/1629/student-living-costs-in-the-usa-international-degree.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">average estimates</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for common living expenses in the US:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the US, nationalism often reflects a strong sense of identity tied to the nation&#8217;s history, cultural diversity, and commitment to democratic principles. This collective identity is celebrated in various civic traditions and public holidays, such as Independence Day (July 4), where communities come together to honour shared values of freedom and unity.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fraternities and sororities are integral to many students&#8217; American university life. They can offer students a close-knit community and opportunities for personal growth through social events, volunteer work, and leadership roles.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Food </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Food in the US reflects its cultural diversity and students can find a wide array of international cuisines. Popular choices for international students include burgers, pizza, tacos, and regional specialties like Southern barbecue and New England clam chowder. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Weather</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The US is geographically vast, with diverse climates from the icy winters of the Northeast to the sunny beaches of southern California and the humid summers of the Southeast. It&#8217;s important to research the climate of your chosen location to pack accordingly. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Health care</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/health-travel-insurance-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Health insurance</a> is essential for international students in the US, with estimated costs ranging from </span><a href="https://www.insubuy.com/study-abroad-health-insurance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">US$700 to US$1,100 per year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Being covered for health insurance ensures access to necessary medical care, including visits to a doctor and emergency services. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Transportation </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While public transportation options vary, major metropolitan areas like New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and California&#8217;s Bay Area (from San Francisco to San Jose) have large networks of buses, subways, and commuter trains. Across the US, cars remain a popular and reliable mode of transportation, offering flexibility for travel within and between cities.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Studying in the US offers international students a rich and rewarding experience. Whether you&#8217;re exploring vibrant cities or embracing campus traditions, the US provides opportunities for academic growth and personal development that extend far beyond the classroom.</span></p>

<p>The United Kingdom (UK) offers international students a fantastic study abroad experience, with its rich history, high quality of life, and excellent universities. In fact, <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/london-best-student-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">London just celebrated its sixth year in a row as the world&#8217;s best student city</a>. However, there are some unexpected benefits of studying in the UK that might not be on your radar. These include shorter degree durations for some students, access to the Graduate visa, incredible travel opportunities, and an outstanding cultural scene. Let&#8217;s explore each of these features below.</p>
<blockquote><p>Check out our <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/what-international-students-need-to-know-about-studying-in-the-uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Study in the UK Guide</a> and start planning your journey as an international student.</p></blockquote>

<h2>Get Your Degree Faster</h2>
<p>If you want to get a master&#8217;s degree in the UK, you&#8217;re in luck: some master&#8217;s degrees can be completed in just one year. The shorter course time helps reduce your overall tuition fees and living expenses. Plus, you&#8217;ll be able to enter the job market sooner.</p>
<p>While bachelor’s degrees in the UK are typically three years long, <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/pathway-programs-uk#:~:text=Because%20different%20UK%20pathway%20programs%20serve%20different%20students%2C%20think%20about%20your%20key%20goals%20before%20applying.%C2%A0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most international undergrad students must take a bachelor&#8217;s preparation course</a> before starting their degree. The standard bachelor&#8217;s preparation course is a year long, which brings your study time up to four years, matching courses in other countries.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;"><strong>Note:</strong> In Scotland, students start post-secondary classes after Year 12. No bachelor&#8217;s preparation courses are needed, but bachelor&#8217;s degrees usually take four years to finish.</p>
<p>Depending on your academic credentials, you might be able to take an <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/pathway-programs-uk#:~:text=International%20Year%20One%20courses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Accelerated Bachelor&#8217;s Preparation course</a> (also called International Year One). These courses combine degree preparation material with first-year course material. You&#8217;ll learn from instructors trained to work with international students and ease into university life with more academic support. Plus, because you&#8217;ll earn credits through this course, you can transition to the second year of your degree in as little as seven months—and graduate at the same time as local peers.</p>
<blockquote><p>From pioneering research to tailored student support, these <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/top-ranked-uk-universities-24" target="_blank" rel="noopener">top-ranked UK universities</a> offer students a world-class experience.</p></blockquote>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-13356 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/travel-luggage-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of two suitcases." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/travel-luggage-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/travel-luggage-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/travel-luggage-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/travel-luggage.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>See the World: Start from the UK.</h2>
<p>London has one of the world&#8217;s busiest airport systems. In fact, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_airports_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=London%20serves%20as%20the%20largest,airport%20systems%20by%20passenger%20traffic)." target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 168 million travelers passed through its six airports</a> in 2023! When departing from London, you can arrive in most European cities in around two hours.</p>
<p>Other international airports in the UK—like <a href="https://www.birminghamairport.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Birmingham</a>, <a href="https://www.edinburghairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edinburgh</a>, <a href="https://www.glasgowairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glasgow</a>, <a href="https://www.liverpoolairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Liverpool</a>, <a href="https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Manchester</a>, and <a href="https://www.newcastleairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newcastle</a>—are less busy than their London counterparts and offer non-stop flights to incredible destinations. To help your travel budget, watch for flight deals from budget airlines, and compare prices on websites like <a href="https://www.skyscanner.net/flights-from/uk/cheap-flights-from-united-kingdom.html?market=UK&amp;locale=en-GB" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Skyscanner</a>.</p>
<p>If you prefer a less hectic mode of travel, consider taking the train. The <a href="http://eurostar.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eurostar</a> can get you to Paris or Brussels in just over two hours, and Amsterdam in under four! Several other European cities are also within easy reach. Just grab your pillow and passport, hop on the sleeper train, and you’ll be ready to start an exciting adventure shortly after sunrise.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-16429 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/grad-cap-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a blue graduation cap and diploma." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/grad-cap-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/grad-cap-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/grad-cap-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/grad-cap.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>Build Your Skills with the Graduate Visa</h2>
<p>With a UK <a href="https://www.gov.uk/graduate-visa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Graduate visa</a>, eligible international students can stay and work in the UK for at least two years after successfully completing a course. PhD graduates may stay for up to three years. This opportunity to gain work experience is a major study benefit for international students.</p>
<p>You could be eligible for the Graduate visa if:</p>
<ul>
<li>You&#8217;re in the UK</li>
<li>You have a <strong>current</strong> <a href="https://www.gov.uk/student-visa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Student visa</a></li>
<li>You&#8217;ve studied a bachelor&#8217;s degree, postgraduate degree, or other eligible course for at least the set minimum amount of time</li>
<li>Your education provider (university or college) has told the Home Office you&#8217;ve successfully completed your course</li>
</ul>
<p>This visa program makes an already desirable study abroad destination an even more attractive option, especially for students who dream of starting their careers in the UK and building an international network.</p>
<p>Under the Graduate visa, you can:</p>
<ul>
<li>Work in most jobs (but not as a professional sportsperson)</li>
<li>Be self-employed</li>
<li>Look for work</li>
<li>Do voluntary work</li>
</ul>
<p>Graduate visa holders are also allowed to travel abroad and return to the UK. <a href="https://www.gov.uk/graduate-visa/your-partner-and-children" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eligible visa holders&#8217; partners and children</a> may also continue to live in the UK.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-13220 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/theatre-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of red and green theatre masks." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/theatre-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/theatre-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/theatre-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/theatre.png 241w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>Enjoy Top Sporting and Cultural Events</h2>
<p>Did you know the modern sports of cricket, rugby, golf, and football <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1F0DQWFvPjd7g5S6qrygZlS/7-amazing-sports-invented-in-the-uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">got their start in the UK</a>? Any sports fan is likely to feel at home here. Whether it’s watching Manchester United vs. Liverpool F.C., or seeing Scotland’s national rugby team play Wales, there’s always an exciting sporting event to attend (or watch with some friends from a local pub).</p>
<p>The UK is also known for its cultural scene. In fact, London is known as the “<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/54e31212-17f1-11e4-b842-00144feabdc0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">theatre capital of the world</a>.” The city is home to 241 venues—with over 110,000 seats, collectively. As a student, theatre tickets can be pricey, so be sure to use student discounts! Or, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/money/2019/sep/21/theatre-seats-heres-how-to-bag-them-at-bargain-prices" target="_blank" rel="noopener">queue for day seats</a>, which are tickets sold on a first-come, first-served basis at heavily reduced prices.</p>
<p>Theatre can be found around the UK: regional theatres stage everything from stand-up to touring West End shows (top-end musicals and dramas). Plus, regional theatres often offer the same great shows at less expensive prices.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Insider&#8217;s Tip:</strong> The <a href="https://www.edfringe.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edinburgh Festival Fringe</a> is one of the world&#8217;s largest theatre festivals. <p>To study abroad, many international students will have to complete an English proficiency exam. This helps to ensure you&#8217;re prepared to live and study in English-speaking countries. One of the most widely accepted types of proficiency exam is the <a href="https://www.ielts.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test</a>. It’s always important to <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/5-tips-for-studying-english-as-a-second-language-esl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">use different methods to improve your English language skills.</a> That said, one of the best ways to prepare for your exam is using online IELTS preparation materials for paid or free IELTS practice exams or mock IELTS tests.</p>

<h2>2. <a href="https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/take-ielts/prepare/free-ielts-practice-tests" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS Ready</a> (Free)</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.britishcouncil.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The British Council</a> is an organization specializing in international cultural and educational opportunities, and one of the other owners of IELTS. Once you register for IELTS with the British Council, you&#8217;ll have free access to their <a href="https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/take-ielts/prepare/courses/road-ielts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“IELTS Ready” preparation course</a>, the most popular IELTS prep course. Keep track of your progress in your personalized My Progress section, or use their score calculator or test countdown tool to make your practice feel real. You&#8217;ll benefit from over 90 interactive activities, and can read advice from British Council teachers who know the IELTS process well.</p>
<p>The above version of the course is free once you register (a more compact version is available for <a href="https://rtiac.clarityenglish.com/?utm_source=takeielts_web&amp;utm_medium=table&amp;utm_campaign=takeielts_free#prefix=TD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Academic</a> and <a href="https://rtigt.clarityenglish.com/?utm_source=takeielts_web&amp;utm_medium=table&amp;utm_campaign=takeielts_free#prefix=TD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">General Training</a> IELTS tests without registration). If you&#8217;re looking for more test prep content, three paid versions of the course are available on IELTS Practice.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-11474 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/laptop-illustration-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a laptop, representing online IELTS preparation." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/laptop-illustration-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/laptop-illustration-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/laptop-illustration-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/laptop-illustration.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>3. <a href="https://www.ieltsessentials.com/about/computer-delivered-ielts/get-familiar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Computer-Delivered IELTS Practice Tests</a> (Free)</h2>
<p>International Education Specialists (IDP) and IELTS offers computer-delivered tests as an option for the listening, reading, and writing portions of the IELTS exam. These are free online IELTS mock tests, offered by IELTS themselves. Often, computer-delivered exams have more test date availability, and a more efficient results-processing period. (You&#8217;ll always complete the speaking part of your exam in-person.)</p>
<p>While the content of the computer-delivered IELTS test is identical to the paper-based test, the style is different, and can feel strange to students who haven&#8217;t taken a test online before. These practice IELTS tests, direct from the test makers, let you experience what a computer-delivered test is like. They also include a downloadable practice test answer key.</p>

<h2>4. <a href="https://www.ielts.org/usa/ielts-for-test-takers/ielts-practice-test" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS.org Practice Test &#8211; USA</a> (Free)</h2>
<p>If you&#8217;re planning to take your IELTS test to study in the United States, check the link above for free resources. Don&#8217;t panic when you see six test categories on the practice test page! Remember, there are two types of IELTS test:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>IELTS General Training:</strong> gauges everyday English skills in work and social environments<br />
and</li>
<li><strong>IELTS Academic</strong>: assesses if you&#8217;re ready to study in an English-speaking institution</li>
</ul>
<p>Most post-secondary institutions will ask incoming students to take the IELTS Academic version. So, make sure you select the &#8220;Academic Reading&#8221; and &#8220;Academic Writing&#8221; practice options. That said, if you want bonus practice, you could <em>also</em> try the &#8220;General Training Reading&#8221; and &#8220;General Training Writing&#8221; practice exams.</p>
<p>(Studying elsewhere? This site also has lots of <a href="https://www.ielts.org/about-the-test/sample-test-questions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free sample IELTS test questions</a> for all test takers.)</p>
<h2><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-13221 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/books-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a pile of books." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/books-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/books-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/books-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/books.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></h2>

<p>If you&#8217;re more comfortable learning from a book, this option may be right for you! These two textbooks were created by <a href="https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cambridge Assessment English</a>, the third owner of IELTS.</p>
<p>These books have details on each section of the test and its scoring system. They also include four authentic exam papers that read just like the real thing. Plus, they&#8217;re yours to keep. So, if you think you might need to take the IELTS more than once, this might be a better choice than paying for the Road to IELTS course, which you can only access for a limited time.</p>
<p>These books come with answer keys, downloadable audio for the Listening test, example Speaking test videos, sample writing answers, and more, so you can prepare effectively for all parts of the IELTS test.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So you’ve determined you want to <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/ca/2018/08/29/canada-good-study-abroad-destination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study in </a></span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/ca/2018/08/29/canada-good-study-abroad-destination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Canada</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. What’s next? Well, now it’s time to narrow it down even further and choose the Canadian city you want to study in. While there are many wonderful cities across the country, there’s one that is a regular contender for the best city in not only Canada but the world: Montréal. So, why study in Montréal?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Montréal, Québec, also referred to as Canada’s “culture capital”, may not have been your first guess! It has topped both London and Paris in a ranking of best cities to live in the world, and consistently appears in the </span><a href="https://www.qschina.cn/en/city-rankings/2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">top fifteen of QS’ Best Student Cities</span></a>&#8216;<span style="font-weight: 400;"> global ranking. These rankings are based on six factors: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Student view</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">University rankings</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Desirability</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Affordability</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Employer activity</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Student mix</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are more good reasons why you should consider studying in Montréal.</span></p>
<div id="attachment_16475" style="width: 810px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-16475" class="wp-image-16475 size-full" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/800px-Montreal_Canada_29659162631.jpeg" alt="A young man and a woman walk on a busy cobblestone street in Montreal, Quebec." width="800" height="496" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/800px-Montreal_Canada_29659162631.jpeg 800w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/800px-Montreal_Canada_29659162631-300x186.jpeg 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/800px-Montreal_Canada_29659162631-768x476.jpeg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><p id="caption-attachment-16475" class="wp-caption-text">Image Credit: <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montreal,_Canada_(29659162631).jpg">Pedro Szekely from Los Angeles, USA</a>, <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons</p></div>
<h3>1. Vibrant Student Life</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Montréal blends all the good things about North America with the beauty and culture found in Europe. It’s known for its laid back yet vibrant lifestyle, unique and creative industries, nightlife, and café culture. Students can choose to stroll down narrow cobblestone roads in Old Montréal, or explore modern, high-tech buildings in the downtown core. Montréal draws inspiration from many things, making it a very exciting city. All of these factors combined with the friendliness and diversity of the city make Montréal very attractive to not only international students, but also Canadian students. As a result, Montréal has one of the largest student populations in the world.</span></p>
<h3><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8785 size-medium" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4-300x257.png" alt="Illustration of female student studying" width="300" height="257" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4-300x257.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4-1024x876.png 1024w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4-768x657.png 768w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4-1536x1314.png 1536w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Student_Home_Female-4.png 1928w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></h3>
<h3>2. Affordable Housing</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Accommodations can be tricky. Finding a place to live in your own city can be a challenge, let alone in a foreign one. You might be unsure of what the standard cost of living is, what locations are best, and what amenities are included. One thing to note is that student accommodations in Montréal are very affordable. In fact, the city is one of the most affordable in all of Canada, which is just one reason students enjoy it so much. Like most cities, the farther you live from the downtown core the cheaper your accommodations will be. However, it is possible to find affordable housing near the city’s universities or colleges. Often, schools are affiliated with housing companies and help students find a home or housemates. If you plan to search the web, </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/ca/2018/07/25/how-to-find-student-accommodations-in-canada/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">here are a few guidelines</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to help you with your house hunt.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-13138 aligncenter" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/long-red-bus-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a long red bus." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/long-red-bus-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/long-red-bus-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/long-red-bus-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/long-red-bus.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h3>3. Stress-Free Transportation</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While large, urban cities have efficient transportation systems, they can be a challenge to adjust to. Montréal, a medium-sized city has a simple transportation system. The </span><a href="http://www.stm.info/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Société de transport de Montréal (STM)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is the local network of trains and buses that take you anywhere you need to go in the city. Even if you do lose your way, the locals are very friendly and always happy to help. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Naturally, students think about the cost of transportation and worry about overspending. What’s nice about Montréal is that, due to its high number of students, the STM offers a lower monthly fee to students under the age of 25. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you prefer to get a little exercise, Montréal has many bike lanes and </span><a href="https://montreal.bixi.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">BIXI</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a bike-sharing system. For a quicker commute, students can use local taxis as they are very safe and also affordable in comparison to other cities.</span></p>
<div id="attachment_11719" style="width: 1034px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11719" class="wp-image-11719 size-large" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal-1024x683.jpeg" alt="A photo of the University of Montreal." width="1024" height="683" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal-728x485.jpeg 728w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/university-of-montreal.jpeg 1125w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><p id="caption-attachment-11719" class="wp-caption-text">Image Courtesy: Universite de Montreal</p></div>
<h3>4. Top-Rated Education</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last but certainly not least, education! In addition to everything else Montréal has to offer, it’s home to some of the best educational institutions. The Université de Montréal is </span><a href="https://www.4icu.org/ca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">one of the top 10 universities in Canada for 2024</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. A French-speaking research university, it’s renowned for its life sciences and medicine programs and pharmacy and pharmacology school. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Montréal is known to deliver a positive university experience for both local and international students, and with Canada’s desirability as a study abroad destination, the city is a primary competitor. What’s so incredibly unique about the student city is its wide variety of options. While Montréal is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world (after Paris), and offers courses in the native language, students also have the option to study in English. Or, students can choose a mix of courses featuring both international languages.</span></p>

To complete this section, you’ll have to read three passages and answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. You might be wondering, &#8220;is the IELTS exam reading test difficult?&#8221; For many folks, the biggest challenge of the IELTS Reading section is having to read multiple passages, and answer questions about what you read in a short amount of time. This is especially true if you&#8217;re taking the IELTS Academic test: its <a href="https://ielts.org/take-a-test/test-types/ielts-academic-test/academic-test-format-in-detail#Reading" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Academic Reading section</a> can have more complex texts, similar to content you might see in a post-secondary classroom. However, with good prep strategies and lots of practice, you&#8217;ll set yourself up for IELTS success. We&#8217;ve got 10 reading tips for IELTS that can help you get a high score!</span></p>

<h2>Read Lots of Different Media Types</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Read as much as you can, across publication types</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">books, newspaper articles, online publications, academic materials, and social media. Because the IELTS reading topics come from diverse sources, reading different content styles will help you prepare effectively. It can also improve your reading comprehension and broaden your English-language vocabulary. Plus, you might learn new slang and understand different speaking patterns. Even listening to music can be helpful. Bonus points if you look up the lyrics!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your reading speed will improve, too, which will give you an edge when taking the test. Reading questions quickly (but still thoroughly) can save you valuable time.</span></p>
<h2>But Don’t Make Reading Your Only Study Tactic</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Being an avid reader is great. However, the IELTS Reading section is designed to test your ability to identify important information within a larger text. So unless you’re closely analyzing everything you read, you won’t be fully prepared.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One way to strengthen this skill is to create questions about what you&#8217;re reading. To do this, find an article that interests you. As you read it, take note of what you think is the most important information in it. After, come up with a question or two (</span><a href="https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/take-ielts/prepare/test-format" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">in the IELTS Reading test format</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">) about the article. This will help you get in a mindset that will lead to success.</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Ensure your IELTS test prep is well-rounded: check out our top strategies for boosting your <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/ielts-writing-7-study-tips-to-increase-your-score" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS Writing,</a> <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/ielts-speaking-10-tips-to-help-increase-your-score" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS Speaking</a>, and <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/ielts-listening" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IELTS Listening</a> scores.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Learn Unfamiliar Words</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As you practice reading in English, get into the habit of highlighting or underlining confusing words or phrases. Then, look them up using a reputable dictionary (like <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merriam Webster</a> or the <a href="https://www.oed.com/?tl=true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oxford English Dictionary</a>) to learn what they mean. This will help you avoid stumbling across a word you don’t recognize during the test.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-12140 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/magnifying-glass-illustration-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a magnifying glass." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/magnifying-glass-illustration-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/magnifying-glass-illustration-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/magnifying-glass-illustration-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/magnifying-glass-illustration.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>Try Reading the Questions First</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before reading the passages in the Reading section of the IELTS test, look at the related questions. Since the questions are tied to the passages, knowing what the questions are looking for can help you know what to look out for as you read.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After reading through the passage once, return to the questions and re-read them. This will help you pinpoint which sections of the text you need to pay careful attention to.</span></p>
<h2>Check Your Spelling</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your answer is spelled incorrectly, it will be marked wrong. The good news is that you don’t lose points for wrong answers, so if you’re not sure how to spell a word, try it anyway. You may get it right!</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Check out our list of the </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/ca/2019/01/11/ielts-preparation-books-for-students/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">5 Best IELTS Preparation Books for International Students</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and the </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/ca/2018/11/05/6-common-ielts-mistakes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">6 Common IELTS Mistakes and How to Avoid Them</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for more IELTS guidance.</span></p></blockquote>
<h2>Watch Out for Traps</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As mentioned above, the IELTS Reading test section is all about reading a text and identifying key information. Let’s say you’ve followed our advice and read the questions </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">before</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> reading the text. You then spot a word in the text which you saw in one of the questions. That must be the answer, right?</span></p>
<p>Not always.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Reading section is built to test your reading comprehension. What does that mean? Some questions are designed to make you think they have obvious answers. Always re-read your answers to make sure they fit what the question asks. Don’t fall into a trap!</span></p>
<h2>Labelling Diagrams</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During the Reading test, you may be asked to label a diagram. The good news is that you’ll find the words you need in the text. Spelling counts here too, so always double-check your answers.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-12141 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/stopwatch-illustration-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of a stopwatch." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/stopwatch-illustration-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/stopwatch-illustration-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/stopwatch-illustration-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/stopwatch-illustration.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2>Highlight Important Information</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Reading section asks you to process a lot of information in a short amount of time. To find key points faster when you&#8217;re re-reading, underline and circle important words and sentences as you go.</span></p>
<h2>Divide Your Time Evenly</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the Reading test, you&#8217;ll answer questions on three different passages. We recommend spending around 20 minutes on each one. This may not seem like much time, but remember: you only have one hour to complete the Reading section.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By splitting your time evenly, you’ll give yourself the best chance of overall success.</span></p>
<h2>A Few More IELTS Reading Test Tips:</h2>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You don’t lose points for wrong answers</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">so never leave a blank space</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Make notes on your question paper, but remember, </span><b>only your answer sheet will be marked</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You’ll be writing in pencil, so remember to bring an eraser</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the True/False questions, you can write “T” or “F” instead of True or False, respectively</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Questions aren’t always linear, meaning the process of answering them doesn’t necessarily have one starting and ending point </span></li>

<h2>IELTS Reading Section</h2>
<p>If you’re not already doing this, be sure to read English books, newspapers, magazines, and online articles during your free time. While reading, ensure you understand the main points and overall message the story is trying to tell. You should be able to do this enough to share and discuss these ideas with others.</p>
<p>You can choose to practice your English writing skills while reading by making notes on key details. Doing so will also help you remember what’s important so you can answer any questions being asked on the written piece.</p>

<h2>IELTS Speaking Section</h2>
<p>The best way to prepare for IELTS is to immerse yourself in the English language. Do your best to engage in conversation with others as often as possible. If you have no one to practice your language skills with, read a book or magazine out loud.</p>
<p>This encourages you to practice the pronunciation of various words. You may feel silly talking to yourself, but this has been proven to help.</p>
<p>The more confident you become speaking the language out loud to yourself, the better you will be at speaking English with others and engaging in conversation. The worst thing you can do is hesitate because you aren&#8217;t fluent. You <em>will</em> be if you commit and practice consistently.</p>
<p>Once you begin to get comfortable with words, try learning slang words to make your sentences sound more natural.</p>

<h2>IELTS Listening Section</h2>
<p>Similar to the speaking section preparation, be sure to listen to conversations in English. You can listen to television shows, English songs, or podcasts.</p>
<p>To prepare for the IELTS test, first listen to the content, and then repeat what is said out loud. It’s also important to listen to and engage in group discussions. This way you will be familiar with and comfortable listening to multiple points coming from multiple people.</p>

<h2>IELTS Writing Section</h2>
<p>Writing can be a challenge. This is a skill you will develop and strengthen over time. In fact, even some native English speakers aren’t strong writers, and even though they learn to write in school.</p>
<p>When it comes to writing essays, be mindful. Following a structure is important. Structure helps the flow of the information being delivered to the reader.</p>
<p>In addition to reading newspapers and magazines, be sure to read sample essays. You can find these online. Familiarize yourself with the various structures used to build essays, such as the points made in each paragraph and the topic of the essay. Be patient with yourself and keep practicing.</p>

<p>Remember, you&#8217;re being tested on your communication skills, <i>not</i> on your general knowledge. Good luck!</p>

<h2>About the Student Direct Stream (SDS)</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/student-direct-stream.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Student Direct Stream (SDS)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was a temporary program which enabled eligible international students from 14 countries to expedite the processing of their </span><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Canadian study permit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A <strong>study permit</strong> gives you the authority to stay in Canada.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> It includes important details about you, like:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">What is your reason for being in Canada</span></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> What program level you are studying at</span></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">The duration of your study program</span></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whether you may work on- or off-campus while studying, or if there are any restrictions around working.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most study permit applications made through the SDS are <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/student-direct-stream.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">processed within 20 calendar days</a>, although some can take longer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To take advantage of faster processing, students must:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Provide their biometrics (if necessary) as quickly as possible</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meet all eligibility requirements</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Note:</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong> A study permit is not a visa, and cannot be used to travel to or enter Canada</strong>. <h2>Applying for a Study Permit through SDS? Here&#8217;s What You&#8217;ll Need. (For Reference Only &#8211; Program Closed)</h2>
<p>Below you&#8217;ll find the specifics of certain documentation you may need for a study permit application made through SDS.</p>
<h3>Provincial Attestation Letters</h3>
<p><strong>As of January 22, 2024, the majority of students who want to study in Canada must provide a <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provincial attestation letter</a> (PAL) for their chosen study location</strong>. A PAL is an electronic certification confirming a student&#8217;s eligibility to apply for a study permit under a province&#8217;s quota. The requirement for a PAL doesn&#8217;t apply to master’s degree, doctoral degree, or K-12 students.</p>
<blockquote><p>For more information on PALs and Canada&#8217;s updated international student policies for 2024, check out our <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/canadian-policy-updates-2024-faqs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FAQ blog</a>.</p></blockquote>

<h2>Submitting Your Application (For Reference Only &#8211; Program Closed)</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students applying for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream can only apply online—there’s no paper application process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To complete your application, you’ll need to:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Review the </span><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5269-applying-study-permit-outside-canada.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">instruction guide</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to complete the forms</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Create electronic copies of your documents</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pay for the application with a credit or debit card</span></li>
</ul>
<h3>Paying for Your Biometrics</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most students will need to provide biometrics and should pay the fee along with their online application. Applicants requiring help providing biometrics or submitting their passports can visit a </span><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/contact-ircc/offices/find-visa-application-centre.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">visa application centre (VAC)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h2><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10966 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-documents-150x150.png" alt="An illustration of application documents." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-documents-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-documents-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-documents-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/application-documents.png 240w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></h2>
<h2>What Happens After You Apply?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After submitting your study permit application through the Student Direct Stream, you’ll have to book an appointment to provide your biometrics before the visa office can begin processing your application.</span></p>
<h3>Provide Your Biometrics</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After paying your application and biometrics fees (if applicable), you’ll receive an instruction letter with details on where and how to provide your biometrics, which you must do within 30 days. Ensure you bring the letter, along with your valid passport, to your appointment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you didn’t pay your biometrics fee when submitting your application, you’ll receive a letter reminding you to do so. The visa office won’t process your application until you have provided your biometrics.</span></p>
<h3>Processing</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The visa office processes most applications within 20 calendar days of receiving the biometrics of an eligible applicant.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the Government of Canada, “if your application doesn’t meet the eligibility for the Student Direct Stream, we’ll review it as a regular study permit. You won’t get faster processing if this happens.”</span></p>
<h2><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-7493 size-full" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Pin_Blue_02.png" alt="Illustration of pin" width="118" height="165" /></h2>
<h2>Next Steps</h2>
<h3>What Happens If an Application Is Refused?</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If the visa office refuses your application, you’ll receive a letter explaining the decision. You can direct any questions to the visa office.</span></p>
<h3>What Happens When My Application Is Approved?</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your application is approved, you’ll receive:</span></p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">A letter of introduction, which you’ll present to a border officer upon arriving in Canada</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">An eTA or visitor visa, depending on your requirements</span></li>
