Studying abroad can stretch many students’ budgets. Luckily, international students planning to study in Australia can find many scholarships, grants, and bursaries to make their education more affordable. Today, we’ll spotlight some financial assistance opportunties for international students which are offered by different organizations, including education providers and the Australian Government.

Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program

If you’re planning to study abroad for a short period through a practicum or clinical placement, for research, or an in-country language study program, you might be eligible for support through the Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program. This joint initiative by the Australian government and the Cheung Kong Group supports both outbound Australian students and inbound (international) students from select Asian countries.

Students won’t receive aid directly from this program. Instead, it provides funding to eligible Australian academic institutions for short-term study opportunities. Every year, universities apply for grants, which they use to fund scholarships or other financial aid.

If you’re an international student from one of the following locations, and plan to study in Australia for at least two weeks and at most one semester, you could be eligible for one of these scholarships:

• Brunei Darussalam
• Cambodia
• China (including Hong Kong)
• India
• Indonesia
• Japan 
• Republic of Korea
• Laos
• Malaysia
• Mongolia
• Myanmar
• Republic of the Philippines
• Singapore
• Thailand 
• Vietnam

If you’re from one of these nationalities, check with your international student office to see whether they offer scholarships funded by the Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program.

Research Training Program (RTP)

Domestic and overseas students enrolled in a higher degree by research at an eligible higher education provider (or HEP) in Australia are eligible for the Research Training Program. Every year, this program provides block grants to post-secondary institutions to support students enrolled in research doctorate and research master’s degrees.

If you’re an international student who’d like to apply for an RTP scholarship, you must contact your HEP for more information and application details. 

The RTP aims to:

• Offer flexible funding options for eligible domestic and international students
• Contribute to cross-sector collaboration between HEPs, industry, and other research end-users
• Deliver graduates with the necessary skills to build diverse careers in academia and industry

The duration of these scholarships vary depending on your time commitment and level of study: 

• Full-time research doctoral students: RTP grants last a minimum of three years and a maximum of four years. 
• Part-time research doctoral students: RTP grants cover a minimum of six years and a maximum of eight years.
• Full-time research master’s students: RTP scholarships last for up to two years.
• Part-time research master’s students: RTP covers up to four years.

RTP scholarships may cover a combination of cost-of-living expenses, a tuition fee offset, and eligible additional costs related to pursuing a higher degree. For more information about these scholarships, check the official RTP Frequently Asked Questions list.

Australia Awards

The Australia Awards offer opportunities for future leaders to pursue professional development, study, and research in Australia. These scholarships are run by the Australian Government and managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Over the 2025 academic year, they provided 1,551 long-term Australia Awards scholarships to students from 55 countries.

These include:

• Australia Awards Scholarships
• Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships
• Australia Awards Mekong-Australia Partnership
• Australia Awards Fellowships

Australia Awards Scholarships are open to postgraduate and undergraduate international students. One of their key requirements is that these students leave Australia for at least two years after graduating. This is because one of the Australia Awards’ goals is for recipients to contribute to their home countries’ resilience, development, and prosperity.

Award recipients automatically become part of the Australia Awards Alumni. This group is an influential and engaged global community of advocates and supporters, and can open new doors to international students by helping them to stay connected to Australia and other alumni.

Do International Students Need a Visa to Study in the US? 

International students of all ages typically need an F-1 visa to study in the United States. To obtain an F-1 visa, students must first apply and be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved school in the US.

What’s the Cost of Living in the US?

The cost of living in the US can vary depending on where you choose to live. Many cities along the coasts in states like New York or California can be more expensive, while other areas such as Missouri, Montana, and Iowa tend to be more affordable. 

Tuition 

The cost of studying in the US varies by institution, level of study, and program type. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees are generally more expensive than humanities, social sciences, and other liberal arts programs. 

According to the College Board, international undergraduate tuition fees can range from US$20,000 to US$50,000 per year, with higher costs for professional degrees such as medicine.

Housing

Accommodation costs vary based on the type of housing. Many students opt to live on-campus during their first year to ease their transition. Housing options include traditional dormitories with shared facilities and apartment-style residences with private bedrooms and shared kitchens.

In 2023, on-campus housing costs ranged from US$500 to US$3,500 per month, with higher costs in metropolitan areas and at private institutions. For example, a one-bedroom or studio apartment in New York City averaged US$3,120 to US$4,000 per month in July 2024. In other areas of the US, monthly rent ranges from US$500 to US$2,500. 

Living Expenses

International students must budget for housing, food, transportation, and daily expenses, which are typically higher in major cities and vary based on personal lifestyle. International students should budget for groceries, utilities (if living off-campus), phones, textbooks, laundry, transportation, and recreational activities. Planning to get around by public transit? Some institutions include a public bus pass with their student fees. Below are some average estimates for common living expenses in the US:

Food and Groceries: ~US$400 to US$600 per month 

Public Transportation: ~US$45 to US$100 per month (sometimes included with tuition/student fees)

Build Your Skills with the Graduate Visa

With a UK Graduate visa, eligible international students can stay and work in the UK for at least two years after successfully completing a course. PhD graduates may stay for up to three years. This opportunity to gain work experience is a major study benefit for international students.

You could be eligible for the Graduate visa if:

The British Council is an organization specializing in international cultural and educational opportunities, and one of the other owners of IELTS. Once you register for IELTS with the British Council, you’ll have free access to their “IELTS Ready” preparation course, the most popular IELTS prep course. It provides comprehensive support, from sample videos and teacher tutorials to timed practice tests. Keep track of your progress in your personalized My Progress section, or use their score calculator or test countdown tool to make your practice feel real. You’ll benefit from over 90 interactive activities, and can read advice from British Council teachers who know the IELTS process well.

The above version of the course is free once you register (a more compact version is available for Academic and General Training IELTS tests without registration). If you’re looking for more test prep content, three paid versions of the course are available on IELTS Practice.

3. Computer-Delivered IELTS Practice Tests (Free)

International Education Specialists (IDP) and IELTS offers computer-delivered tests as an option for the listening, reading, and writing portions of the IELTS exam. These are free online IELTS mock tests, offered by IELTS themselves. Often, computer-delivered exams have more test date availability, and a more efficient results-processing period. (You’ll always complete the speaking part of your exam in-person.)

While the content of the computer-delivered IELTS test is identical to the paper-based test, the style is different, and can feel strange to students who haven’t taken a test online before. These practice IELTS tests, direct from the test makers, let you experience what a computer-delivered test is like. They also include a downloadable practice test answer key.

4. IELTS.org Practice Test – USA (Free)

If you’re planning to take your IELTS test to study in the United States, check the link above for free resources. Don’t panic when you see six test categories on the practice test page! Remember, there are two types of IELTS test:

• IELTS General Training: gauges everyday English skills in work and social environments
  and
• IELTS Academic: assesses if you’re ready to study in an English-speaking institution

Most post-secondary institutions will ask incoming students to take the IELTS Academic version. So, make sure you select the “Academic Reading” and “Academic Writing” practice options. That said, if you want bonus practice, you could also try the “General Training Reading” and “General Training Writing” practice exams.

5. Cambridge IELTS Academic Student’s Book or General Student’s Book (GBP 38.00 or C$65.10 each):

If you’re more comfortable learning from a book, this option may be right for you! These two textbooks were created by Cambridge Assessment English, the third owner of IELTS.

These books have details on each section of the test and its scoring system. They also include four authentic exam papers that read just like the real thing. Plus, they’re yours to keep. So, if you think you might need to take the IELTS more than once, this might be a better choice than paying for the Road to IELTS course, which you can only access for a limited time.

These books come with answer keys, downloadable audio for the Listening test, example Speaking test videos, sample writing answers, and more, so you can prepare effectively for all parts of the IELTS test.

Even if you do lose your way, the locals are very friendly and always happy to help. 

Naturally, students think about the cost of transportation and worry about overspending. What’s nice about Montréal is that, due to its high number of students, the STM offers a lower monthly fee to students under the age of 25. 

If you prefer to get a little exercise, Montréal has many bike lanes and BIXI, a bike-sharing system. For a quicker commute, students can use local taxis as they are very safe and also affordable in comparison to other cities.

To complete this section, you’ll have to read three passages and answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. This is especially true if you’re taking the IELTS Academic test: its Academic Reading section can have more complex texts, similar to content you might see in a post-secondary classroom. Read Lots of Different Media Types

Read as much as you can, across publication types—books, newspaper articles, online publications, academic materials, and social media. Because the IELTS reading topics come from diverse sources, reading different content styles will help you prepare effectively. It can also improve your reading comprehension and broaden your English-language vocabulary. Plus, you might learn new slang and understand different speaking patterns. Even listening to music can be helpful. Bonus points if you look up the lyrics!

Your reading speed will improve, too, which will give you an edge when taking the test. Reading questions quickly (but still thoroughly) can save you valuable time.

But Don’t Make Reading Your Only Study Tactic

Being an avid reader is great. However, the IELTS Reading section is designed to test your ability to identify important information within a larger text. So unless you’re closely analyzing everything you read, you won’t be fully prepared.

One way to strengthen this skill is to create questions about what you’re reading. To do this, find an article that interests you. As you read it, take note of what you think is the most important information in it. After, come up with a question or two (in the IELTS Reading test format) about the article. This will help you get in a mindset that will lead to success.

Learn Unfamiliar Words

As you practice reading in English, get into the habit of highlighting or underlining confusing words or phrases. Then, look them up using a reputable dictionary (like Merriam Webster or the Oxford English Dictionary) to learn what they mean. This will help you avoid stumbling across a word you don’t recognize during the test.

Try Reading the Questions First

Before reading the passages in the Reading section of the IELTS test, look at the related questions. Since the questions are tied to the passages, knowing what the questions are looking for can help you know what to look out for as you read.

After reading through the passage once, return to the questions and re-read them. This will help you pinpoint which sections of the text you need to pay careful attention to.

Check Your Spelling

If your answer is spelled incorrectly, it will be marked wrong. The good news is that you don’t lose points for wrong answers, so if you’re not sure how to spell a word, try it anyway. You may get it right!

Watch Out for Traps

As mentioned above, the IELTS Reading test section is all about reading a text and identifying key information. Let’s say you’ve followed our advice and read the questions before reading the text. You then spot a word in the text which you saw in one of the questions. That must be the answer, right?

Not always.

The Reading section is built to test your reading comprehension. What does that mean? Some questions are designed to make you think they have obvious answers. Always re-read your answers to make sure they fit what the question asks. Don’t fall into a trap!

Labelling Diagrams

During the Reading test, you may be asked to label a diagram. The good news is that you’ll find the words you need in the text. Spelling counts here too, so always double-check your answers.

Highlight Important Information

The Reading section asks you to process a lot of information in a short amount of time. To find key points faster when you’re re-reading, underline and circle important words and sentences as you go.

Divide Your Time Evenly

In the Reading test, you’ll answer questions on three different passages. We recommend spending around 20 minutes on each one. This may not seem like much time, but remember: you only have one hour to complete the Reading section.

By splitting your time evenly, you’ll give yourself the best chance of overall success.

A Few More IELTS Reading Test Tips:

• You don’t lose points for wrong answers—so never leave a blank space
• Make notes on your question paper, but remember, only your answer sheet will be marked 
• You’ll be writing in pencil, so remember to bring an eraser
• For the True/False questions, you can write “T” or “F” instead of True or False, respectively
• Questions aren’t always linear, meaning the process of answering them doesn’t necessarily have one starting and ending point

IELTS Reading Section

If you’re not already doing this, be sure to read English books, newspapers, magazines, and online articles during your free time. While reading, ensure you understand the main points and overall message the story is trying to tell. You should be able to do this enough to share and discuss these ideas with others.

You can choose to practice your English writing skills while reading by making notes on key details. Doing so will also help you remember what’s important so you can answer any questions being asked on the written piece.

IELTS Speaking Section

The best way to prepare for IELTS is to immerse yourself in the English language. Do your best to engage in conversation with others as often as possible. If you have no one to practice your language skills with, read a book or magazine out loud.

This encourages you to practice the pronunciation of various words. You may feel silly talking to yourself, but this has been proven to help.

The more confident you become speaking the language out loud to yourself, the better you will be at speaking English with others and engaging in conversation. The worst thing you can do is hesitate because you aren’t fluent. You will be if you commit and practice consistently.

Once you begin to get comfortable with words, try learning slang words to make your sentences sound more natural.

IELTS Listening Section

Similar to the speaking section preparation, be sure to listen to conversations in English. You can listen to television shows, English songs, or podcasts.

To prepare for the IELTS test, first listen to the content, and then repeat what is said out loud. It’s also important to listen to and engage in group discussions. This way you will be familiar with and comfortable listening to multiple points coming from multiple people.

IELTS Writing Section

Writing can be a challenge. This is a skill you will develop and strengthen over time. In fact, even some native English speakers aren’t strong writers, and even though they learn to write in school.

When it comes to writing essays, be mindful. Following a structure is important. Structure helps the flow of the information being delivered to the reader.

In addition to reading newspapers and magazines, be sure to read sample essays. You can find these online. Familiarize yourself with the various structures used to build essays, such as the points made in each paragraph and the topic of the essay. Be patient with yourself and keep practicing.

In a Government of Canada bulletin dated November 9, 2024, the Canadian federal government shared that the Student Direct Stream, which enabled expedited study permit processing for future international students from select countries, was closed effective 2:00 PM Eastern Time on November 8, 2024. Applications received prior to that time will still be processed. Moving forward, all applications will go through the general study permit application stream.

As the SDS program is now closed and not accepting further applications, the content below is for reference only.

About the Student Direct Stream (SDS)

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was a temporary program which enabled eligible international students from 14 countries to expedite the processing of their Canadian study permit.

A study permit gives you the authority to stay in Canada. It includes important details about you, like:

• What is your reason for being in Canada
• What program level you are studying at
• The duration of your study program
• Whether you may work on- or off-campus while studying, or if there are any restrictions around working.

Most study permit applications made through the SDS are processed within 20 calendar days, although some can take longer.

To take advantage of faster processing, students must:

• Provide their biometrics (if necessary) as quickly as possible
• Meet all eligibility requirements

Note: A study permit is not a visa, and cannot be used to travel to or enter Canada. You may also need to obtain a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).

Who Was Eligible for the Student Direct Stream?

If you’re a legal resident of one of the following 14 countries, you may have been eligible for the SDS:

• Antigua and Barbuda
• Brazil
• China
• Colombia
• Costa Rica
• India
• Morocco
• Pakistan
• Peru
• St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Senegal
• The Philippines
• Trinidad and Tobago
• Vietnam

To be eligible, you must:

• Have a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province or territory you plan to study in
• Have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI)
• Live outside of Canada when applying
• Have proof of payment of first-year tuition
• Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of C$20,635
  
• Have your most recent secondary or post-secondary transcript(s)
• Have a language test result demonstrating sufficient proficiency (see Language Test Results, below)

Depending on where you plan to study, and your personal circumstances, you may need to:

• Have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (if planning to study in Québec)
• Complete a medical exam before applying (if applicable)
• Get a police certificate (if applicable)

You may need to provide additional documentation, which can mean longer processing times. Please refer to your country’s specific visa office instructions, which you can obtain by selecting your country of residence from this menu.

Applying for a Study Permit through SDS? Here’s What You’ll Need. (For Reference Only – Program Closed)

Below you’ll find the specifics of certain documentation you may need for a study permit application made through SDS.

Provincial Attestation Letters

As of January 22, 2024, the majority of students who want to study in Canada must provide a provincial attestation letter (PAL) for their chosen study location. A PAL is an electronic certification confirming a student’s eligibility to apply for a study permit under a province’s quota. The requirement for a PAL doesn’t apply to master’s degree, doctoral degree, or K-12 students.

Proof of First-Year Tuition Payment

Students may demonstrate proof of full payment of your first year of tuition by including one of the following documents with their application:

• A receipt from the DLI 
• An official letter from the DLI confirming payment
• A receipt from a bank indicating that funds have been paid to the DLI 
• Proof that funds have been transferred into a repository account at the DLI to be applied to the tuition bill later

Medical Exam

You may need to obtain a medical exam from an Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)-approved doctor if you:

• Have lived or travelled in certain countries or territories for six months or longer in the year before coming to Canada
• Plan to study or work in: 
  • The health field
  • Primary or secondary education
  • Child or elder care

Police Certificate

To determine whether you’ll need to submit a police certificate, select your country of residence from the menu and consult the visa office instructions.

Language Test Results

You must include your language test results that demonstrate English or French proficiency. As of August 10, 2023, SDS applicants may submit English proficiency test results from four new providers, including:

• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)
• Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP General)
• Pearson Test of English – Academic (PTE Academic)
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT)

Language test results must meet or exceed the following minimum scores:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic or General: 6.0 or higher in each language skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
• Test d’évaluation de français (TEF): This test, for students studying in French, requires a score equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7 or higher in each language skill
• CAEL: minimum score of 60
• CELPIP General: a score equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7 or higher in each skill
• Pearson PTE Academic: minimum score of 60
• TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 83

Bringing Spouses, Common-Law Partners and Dependent Children

If your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children intend to accompany you to Canada, they may also be eligible for faster processing on their:

• Visitor visa
• Work permit
• Study permit

Their completed applications must accompany yours to take advantage of faster processing. To include their applications, select the option that says you have family members accompanying you to Canada.

Who Wasn’t Eligible for the Student Direct Stream?

According to the Government of Canada, “if you live anywhere other than one of the countries listed above (even if you’re a citizen of one of the countries above), you must apply through the regular study permit application process. If you live in another country (even if you’re a citizen of one of the countries above), or if you don’t meet the eligibility for faster processing, you may still be eligible for a study permit through the regular study permit application process.”

Submitting Your Application (For Reference Only – Program Closed)

Students applying for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream can only apply online—there’s no paper application process.

To complete your application, you’ll need to:

• Review the instruction guide to complete the forms
• Create electronic copies of your documents
• Pay for the application with a credit or debit card

Paying for Your Biometrics

Most students will need to provide biometrics and should pay the fee along with their online application. Applicants requiring help providing biometrics or submitting their passports can visit a visa application centre (VAC).

What Happens After You Apply?

After submitting your study permit application through the Student Direct Stream, you’ll have to book an appointment to provide your biometrics before the visa office can begin processing your application.

Provide Your Biometrics

After paying your application and biometrics fees (if applicable), you’ll receive an instruction letter with details on where and how to provide your biometrics, which you must do within 30 days. Ensure you bring the letter, along with your valid passport, to your appointment.

If you didn’t pay your biometrics fee when submitting your application, you’ll receive a letter reminding you to do so. The visa office won’t process your application until you have provided your biometrics.

Processing

The visa office processes most applications within 20 calendar days of receiving the biometrics of an eligible applicant.

According to the Government of Canada, “if your application doesn’t meet the eligibility for the Student Direct Stream, we’ll review it as a regular study permit. You won’t get faster processing if this happens.”
