Obtaining a student visa is one of the most critical steps of becoming an international student. If you’ve been accepted to a Canadian institution, securing your study permit is the final key to unlocking your education in Canada. Unfortunately, study permit refusals are a reality for many aspiring international students. Canada’s popularity and recent policy changes can make it harder to get a visa. Canadian study visa rejection reasons range from the applicant’s finances to academic performance, missing documentation, and more.

To ensure your Canadian visa application gets approved, it’s helpful to understand why Canadian student visa applications are rejected. Below, we’ve highlighted five of the most common Canada visa rejection reasons.

1. Insufficient Financial Resources

Proving you have access to enough funds to support yourself is a critical part of your study permit application. As part of the Canadian student visa application process, applicants must submit proof of financial support, also called proof of funds. These documents provide evidence that you can support yourself while studying abroad.

In 2024, financial reasons were cited on over half of all refused visa applications. The factors below are all grounds for visa rejection:

• Lack of funds to pay for tuition fees
• Lack of funds for day-to-day living while in Canada
• Uncertainty around your ability to pay for travel expenses
• Lack of funds to return home after studying in Canada
• Missing supporting documents for applicant or host’s financial assets

The national proof of funds amount is set in line with the cost of living and is updated regularly by the Government of Canada. It increased to C$22,895 on September 1, 2025.

When you submit your study permit application, make sure you include all the sources of your funds. This includes any necessary documents from your financial institution or those of family members who are supporting your journey. For many students, providing a clear bank statement covering the last six months and showing a stable financial history is crucial. Large, recent, and unexplained deposits can cause a visa officer to be concerned or skeptical.

2. Not Including a Letter of Acceptance or Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)

Before you apply for a visa, you must obtain a letter of acceptance (LOA) from a Canadian institution on the designated learning institutions (DLI) list. When you’re accepted to the institution, they will issue you a letter of acceptance. Most students will also receive a Provincial (or Territorial) Attestation Letter. The PAL or TAL certifies you’ve been assigned one of the available spaces to study in that province or territory.

Both of these documents need to be included in your study permit application (unless you’re PAL-exempt). If you don’t include these documents, the visa officer will reject your application.

3. Misrepresentation or Document Issues

Submitting authentic and accurate documents is vital. Documents with incorrect or fraudulent information can lead to an immediate Canadian visa rejection and a ban from reapplying for another one for up to five years. Even forgetting to fill in a question or two can mean you’ll have to resubmit your application.

Common issues include:

• Providing fraudulent or fake documents: This includes any letters, certificates, or financial statements.
• Not fully completing all required forms: Ensure all forms are completed in their entirety before you submit your application.
• Providing information that is inconsistent with the documents you have submitted.

The visa officer will use the documents you submitted to determine whether you are admissible to Canada. If they determine that any of the documents are inauthentic or inaccurate, they can refuse your student visa application. If you haven’t filled out a form completely, you may have the opportunity to resubmit your application, but this can still delay your study timeline.

4. Unclear Purpose of Visit

Visa officers will review your application to ensure they are confident that the main reason you are applying for a study permit is to study in Canada. While you are allowed to express a desire to work in Canada after you graduate, your studies need to be your primary goal! Immigration officials will look at your academic background and work experience to ensure your chosen program of study is a logical and natural progression for you.

For example, an officer may question your study purpose if:

• Your chosen program is not related to your previous studies.
• You already have a higher qualification than the program you are applying for (for example, you are applying for a bachelor’s degree but already have a master’s degree).
• The program does not seem to offer a clear benefit to your future career prospects.

Your statement of purpose (SOP) and personal circumstances must clearly show that your main purpose for coming to Canada is to study.

5. Uncertain Post-Study Plans

Similar to establishing your purpose of visit, visa officers need to understand what your plans are after you graduate. Your application should make your post-study career goals clear, and it should explain how your Canadian education will benefit your future.

In your study plan, outline the field you want to work in once your studies are complete and what kind of role you plan to find. Even if you’re considering trying to get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduating, detail how your chosen program can help you get a job in your home country. Provide information about your family and economic ties back home, and also be sure to highlight any prior travel history that shows you’ve left and returned to your home country in the past.

How to Build A Strong Study Permit Application

To minimize the risk of a study permit refusal, you must present a compelling and cohesive application package. Here are three things that can help build a strong student visa application:

• Write a clear Statement of Purpose: Clearly outline your motivation for studying in Canada, why you chose your specific program and institution, and how this will help you achieve your career goals in your home country.
• Show your financial readiness: Provide clear and verifiable proof of funds. Include supporting documents to back up your statement.
• Only Submit Authentic Documents: Ensure all forms and supporting documents are accurate, complete, and authentic.

Why Is a Study Plan Important?

Study plans aren’t always required as part of a Canadian student visa application. But, it’s always recommended that you include one anyway. Think of your study plan as your chance to tell your story. Visa officers want to know that you have a clear academic and career path, that you’ve done your research, and that you plan to use your education to build a future—whether that’s in your home country or globally.

Ultimately, a strong study plan helps to prove that you’re a genuine student and increases the likelihood of your visa approval.

Tips for Writing a Great Study Plan

Before we get into the types of questions you must answer when writing your study plan, here are a few quick tips:

• Keep it simple and concise. Aim for one page (two maximum) and make sure every paragraph adds value.
• Be honest and personal. Write in your own voice and avoid copying from templates or relying on AI tools to write for you. General statements don’t add useful information and don’t help build credibility.
• Proofread carefully. Check for grammar, spelling, and clarity. You can also ask someone to review it for you, like a family member or friend who has strong English skills.
• Address any gaps. If you have breaks in your education or work history, explain them briefly and positively.
• Focus on your studies. Don’t include your entire life history in your study plan. Everything in your study plan should relate to your education and career goals.

What to Include in Your Study Plan

While there isn’t a specific format required for your study plan, visa officers are generally looking for you to answer eight main questions. Keep in mind the tips above when writing your answers to each of these questions to ensure your plan is as strong and credible as possible.

Study Plan Questions and Strategies

1. Why do you wish to study in Canada in the program for which you have been accepted?

Describe the reasons why you want to study this particular program in Canada. What advantages does it offer? Why is Canada your preferred destination? Is it because of the country’s high-quality education system, or its multicultural society?

2. What is your overall educational goal?

Go into greater detail and describe your educational goal. Maybe you’re looking to continue your education immediately after secondary school. Or, perhaps you want to expand your knowledge by achieving a master’s or post-graduate degree.

Support your answer by discussing the field of study you’re interested in and how this particular route will further your career goals. You may even consider researching the type of industry you want to work in after graduating and its general requirements. Keeping this in mind will help you better understand whether your educational plans align with your overall career goals.

3. Why are you not pursuing a similar program in your country of residence or of citizenship?

Canada is globally recognized for its quality education system. This reason alone may be why you’ve chosen to pursue a program in Canada over your home country. If it is, you can say so. But also outline any other factors you considered, such as whether your chosen Canadian institution is the only one that offers the program you want to study, or has field-leading faculty.

4. What research have you done into studies in your country of residence or of citizenship?

Take this opportunity to discuss the options your home country offers in regard to academic institutions and programs. Don’t limit your research. There’s a chance a college or university in your country will offer the same program you’ve been accepted to in Canada, so you’ll want to explain why you prefer the Canadian institution or program. You may even choose to discuss the overall differences in education between your home country and Canada

5. How will this program enhance your employment opportunities in your country of residence or of citizenship?

Discuss the various employment opportunities you have explored in your country. It’s possible you found a desirable job at home, but lack the appropriate education to qualify for it. In this case, you can discuss how continuing your education in Canada will help prepare you for this role.

6. What ties do you have to your country of residence or of citizenship?

For this particular question, you must state whether you have family in your country of residence or citizenship. Family ties may include children, parents, a spouse, or a partner.

7. In the case of a minor applicant (under 18 years of age), what are your reasons for wishing to study in Canada? What are your parents’ or guardians’ immigration status in their current country of residence?

Outline your reasons for wanting to study in Canada. Be sure to include your parents’ or guardians’ immigration status. You must also include their bank balance certificate, bank statements, investments, property, and anything else that indicates the financial assets owned by your parents or guardians.

8. Provide details of your education history. This includes dates when the course started and ended, the name and address of the school, the course taken, and the qualification, degree, or certificate you earned.

To address this question, you’ll need to provide details of all the schools you’ve attended to date. Be sure to include the following:

• Start and end dates
• Full institution name and address
• Course name (or program name, for college and university studies)
• Qualification, degree, or certificate awarded

Also share your work history in this section. This includes jobs or volunteer positions you’ve held and how they may help with your studies and overall goals.

Finally, be sure to show that you have a solid financial plan to support your studies. Whether it’s personal savings, family support, scholarships, or student loans, be clear about how you will cover your tuition and living expenses in Canada.

To conclude your study plan, summarize your educational goals and the reasons you want to study in Canada. Your summary section is also an excellent place to thank the person reading your application!

However, it can be a challenge to understand international students’ working hours for students in Canada, while understanding and obeying the terms of your study permit. From a work, school, and life balance perspective, we’ve captured some key learnings below.

Working While Studying in Canada FAQs

Can I Work While Studying in Canada?

The answer is: mostly yes. You don’t need a separate work permit to work on or off campus if you are enrolled full-time at a recognized institution and meet all eligibility requirements. Your study permit also must include a condition allowing you to work on and/or off campus.

What are International Students’ Working Hours in Canada?

In the past, international students could only work for 20 hours per week while classes were in session, and full time (up to 40 hours per week) during school breaks, like the Christmas holidays. Effective as of November 8, 2024, eligible international students may work up to 24 hours per week off-campus. International students working on campus don’t have a limit on how many hours they may work, as long as they continue to meet the government’s eligibility requirements.

Do I Need to Apply for a Co-op Work Permit?

If you have a work placement or co-op through your study program, you may not need to apply for a co-op work permit under a temporary public policy valid until April 30, 2024. Other eligibility conditions may apply.

Work-Life Balance while Studying in Canada

Now, if you’re eligible to work while studying, here are a few tips on how to balance it all. With international students’ ability to work more hours in Canada, even temporarily, it’s more important than ever to prioritize a work-life balance.

Use a Calendar Tool

Use something where you keep track of all your time. This might be the simplest and most important thing to help you work while studying in Canada. As uncool as it may seem, we also recommend including all your personal appointments in the calendar. This ensures you never double book yourself. While some people may prefer a paper agenda, we suggest an electronic version for a few reasons:

• If you lose your book, it’s gone. No backups.
• An e-version can be synced across numerous devices (phone, tablet, computer, etc.)
• You can receive alerts across all those devices.

Take a Job with Defined Hours

As nice as it is to have flexible work hours, they can make it more of a challenge to commit to certain plans. With set hours, you know what you’ll be working on and when, and minimize surprises. In addition, try to secure a job that doesn’t require you to “bring your work home with you.” This ensures your time is fully segmented, which allows your mind to focus on the task at hand rather than trying to juggle work and school within the same time frame.

Plan for Leisure

Sometimes when you are juggling work and school, having fun is an afterthought. The problem with that is leisure is required for good mental health. Therefore, even if it seems counterintuitive, taking time off will mean better coursework and a healthier mind. As such, make sure you schedule in your leisure time, otherwise your calendar will likely keep getting booked up.

Plan for Study

Similarly, use your calendar tool to ensure you schedule in some study time because otherwise, that leisure time might also begin to interrupt your study time. Remember: the calendar is your buddy.

Monitor your Stress Levels

Due to work and school, you can get too stressed out. Monitor that and push back on your work hours if you have to. Keep in mind you are there to study first, and work second. Unless there is a financial imperative, make sure your studies come first, and offload some hours if you can. Don’t forget to reach out to student services on campus, whether you need someone to talk to, or need to access the campus food bank. Again, unless there is a financial imperative, this is probably the most important consideration with regards to work while studying in Canada.

Proving Study Intent, Not Dual Intent

Start researching and preparing for your visa application as soon as possible; ideally, at least six months before your intended start date. This should give you plenty of time to gather all the required documents, financial proof, and to address any potential issues or concerns that may arise during the application process.

When preparing your visa application, be sure to review the eligibility requirements carefully, and ensure you meet all the criteria before submitting your application. This is likely one of the most important applications you’ll ever submit, so slow down and take your time getting every detail correct.

2) Provide Complete and Accurate Information

Ensure that all your supporting documents are up to date and accurate, including:

• Proof of acceptance from a Canadian higher education institution 
• Transcripts and academic certificates
• Your Statement of Purpose
• Language proficiency test results (like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo) 
• Proof of financial support and financial statements
• Your resume
• A valid passport

Because of this, it’s always important to carefully review the document checklist provided by the Canadian immigration authorities and ensure you have all the necessary documents ready before submitting your application.

What Has Changed?

On December 29, 2022, the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) came into effect. ECTA aims to assist trade and open new service markets in both signatory countries. It’s also seen as an important step towards a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement between India and Australia. ECTA has updated many aspects of trade between these countries, including education and training. This agreement is expected to open new doors for Indian international students, who are Australia’s second-largest international student market.

As Ravneet Pawha, National Vice-Chair of the Australia India Business Council, noted to the Times of India:

This visionary deal between the two countries, with its provision of extended post-study work visas, intensifying bilateral research, and mutual recognition agreements, will enable students from both countries to realise their full potential.

How Are Post-Study Work Visas Changing?

After graduation, Indian international students may apply for an Australian post-study work visa (also known as a Temporary Graduate Visa, subclass 485). The visa’s duration will change depending on which qualification was completed.

Per the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, post-study work visas for Indian international students will soon be:

• Diploma or trade qualification: up to 18 months
• Bachelor’s degree: up to two years
• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors, with First Class Honours: up to three years
• Master’s degree: up to three years
• Doctoral degree: up to four years

Historically, international students who pursued a diploma or trade qualification weren’t eligible for an Australia post-study work visa. Until 2023, these visas were only for international students who completed a qualification at the degree level or above. 

These changes are in addition to other considerations that can impact visa length. For example, degrees in select fields may be eligible for a post-study work visa that is two years longer than the standard visa length. (For example, some bachelor’s degree holders may be able to stay and work for four years, instead of two.) Extended visa durations may also be available to students who complete their studies in designated regional areas.

The visa extension for graduates from a STEM- or ICT-related course is also exciting, and can provide these new graduates with valuable international work experience in their field.

Who Is Eligible for the Work and Holiday Program?

Students considering a shorter study abroad experience should consider applying for the Australian Work and Holiday visa. One of ECTA’s provisions was reserving 1,000 Work and Holiday visa program places per year for Indian youth between the ages of 18 and 30. The Work and Holiday program encourages youth to travel, work, and study in Australia. As part of this program, visa holders may also study in Australia for up to four months.

On a day off or over the weekend, visit these beautiful places in Australia.

Have you received your acceptance letter to your dream academic institution in Ireland? If so, it’s time to start applying for an Ireland student visa! Some requirements must be fulfilled to start studying on the Emerald Isle. Let’s go over how you can get started on your student visa application!

Types of Student Visas

First things first: there are two main types of visas to choose from, and many nationalities don’t actually require a visa, such as Malaysia, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates. However, even if you’re a student whose nationality is exempt from visa requirements, you still need permission to enter Ireland when you arrive. To find out if your country is exempt from Student Visa requirements, check the Irish Immigration Service website.

For those that need to apply for a student visa, the length of the course you’re taking defines which type of visa you’ll need. If you’re taking a short-term course that lasts less than 90 days, you’ll require a Short Stay Visa (also known as a ‘C’ visa). If you’re taking a long-term course that lasts longer than 90 days,  you’ll require a Long Stay Visa (commonly referred to as a ‘D’ visa). Short Stay Visas don’t allow students to work. But with a Long Stay Student Visa, you can work 20 hours per week while school’s in session and 40 hours per week during breaks.

Studying Without a Student Visa

If your home country doesn’t require a student visa to study in Ireland, there’s still some important documentation you must show government officials when arriving. Those documents may include:

• Letter of Acceptance (LOA): A letter that confirms a student’s acceptance in a valid academic institution for a full-time course that lasts for a minimum of one academic year.
• English Language Proficiency: Proof that a student can speak and understand English at an academic level.
• Financial Evidence: Evidence that proves a student has paid for their course and has enough funds to support themselves while in the country.
• Sponsorship: A sponsor that has access to funds to provide to the student studying abroad.

Studying With a Student Visa

Short Stay Visa

Want to study in Ireland, but don’t plan to stay longer than 90 days? If so, then a short stay (’C’ visa) is your best bet. There are many short English language courses available for students who wish to complete short-term studies in Ireland.

Long Stay Visa

If you’re committed to studying in Ireland for the long haul, then a long stay (‘D’ visa) is for you. Make sure your course is an approved program from the Interim List of Eligible Programs (ILEP). For a full list of eligible programs, check the official Irish Immigration Service website.

Note: If you want to stay in Ireland for longer than three months, you must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) upon arrival and receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP).

Applying for a Visa

Ready to start applying? It’s recommended you begin the online application process around three months prior to your course start date. Here’s an overall step-by-step guide when applying for a student visa:

1. Complete the online application process.
2. Complete the summary application form.
3. Print, sign, date, and submit the summary form along with supporting documentation.

Note: You may be asked to provide biometrics information in the application form if necessary.

In the application process, you may be required to provide a full translation if your documents are not in English or Irish (Gaelic). When translating your documents, they must contain the following:

• A translator’s confirmation of the accuracy of the translation
• The date of the translation
• The translator’s full name, signature, and contact information

Supporting documentation that is required in your summary application form may include:

• Application Summary document
• Application Letter
• Two coloured passport-sized photographs not more than 6 months old

• Proof that the student has enrolled in a privately funded course
• Evidence accounting for any gaps in the student’s educational history
• Confirmation of fee payment to the college
• Affirmation that the student has the academic ability to pursue their chosen course
• Documentation of the student’s proficiency in English or Irish
• Finances
• Private medical insurance
• Previous visa refusals

Provincial Nominee Program

The Provincial Nominee Program is ideal for individuals who want to live in a specific province or territory (with the exception of Quebec, which has its own immigration pathway, detailed below) and have the right skills to contribute to its economy. Eligible applicants can apply to the Provincial Nominee Program under one of the following streams:

• Students
• Business People
• Skilled Workers 
• Semi-skilled Workers

Atlantic Immigration Pilot

After you complete your studies and have a work permit, you may be eligible for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot. It allows employers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island to attract highly-qualified candidates to these Atlantic provinces. Candidates can apply under one of three streams: 

• Atlantic High-Skilled Program
• Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program
• Atlantic International Graduate Program

Each requires specific work experience, education, and language requirements, as well as a job offer from an employer in an Atlantic province. Watch the video to learn more.

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot

If the idea of living and working in a tight-knit town or rural community sounds appealing, the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot might be for you. You may be eligible for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot if you receive a job offer from an employer in one of the following communities and meet the other eligibility requirements:

• Claresholm, Alberta
• Vernon, British Columbia
• West Kootenay, British Columbia
• Altona/Rhineland, Manitoba
• Brandon, Manitoba
• North Bay, Ontario
• Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
• Sudbury, Ontario
• Thunder Bay, Ontario
• Timmins, Ontario
• Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Permanent Residence for Caregivers

Caregivers are in high-demand in most provinces across Canada. If you have an open work permit and are working as a caregiver in Canada, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency under one of the following pilot programs:

• Home Child Care Provider Pilot 
• Home Support Worker Pilot

If you don’t meet the requirements for permanent residency, you may still be eligible to work in Canada temporarily through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Watch the video to learn everything you need to know.

Quebec Experience Program

The province of Quebec has its own unique set of rules and requirements for immigration, which differs from the rest of Canada. If you studied full-time at an institution recognized by the Quebec government and obtained a diploma within the last 36 months, you may be eligible for the Quebec Experience Program.

The first step to permanent residency through the Quebec Experience Program is to obtain a Quebec Selection Certificate, known in French as a certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ). This document is issued by Quebec’s Ministère de l’immigration, de la diversité et de l’inclusion (MIDI).
