Luckily, international students planning to study in Australia can find many scholarships, grants, and bursaries to make their education more affordable. Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program

If you’re planning to study abroad for a short period through a practicum or clinical placement, for research, or an in-country language study program, you might be eligible for support through the Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program. This joint initiative by the Australian government and the Cheung Kong Group supports both outbound Australian students and inbound (international) students from select Asian countries.

Students won’t receive aid directly from this program. Instead, it provides funding to eligible Australian academic institutions for short-term study opportunities. Every year, universities apply for grants, which they use to fund scholarships or other financial aid.

If you’re an international student from one of the following locations, and plan to study in Australia for at least two weeks and at most one semester, you could be eligible for one of these scholarships:

• Brunei Darussalam
• Cambodia
• China (including Hong Kong)
• India
• Indonesia
• Japan 
• Republic of Korea
• Laos
• Malaysia
• Mongolia
• Myanmar
• Republic of the Philippines
• Singapore
• Thailand 
• Vietnam

If you’re from one of these nationalities, check with your international student office to see whether they offer scholarships funded by the Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program.

Research Training Program (RTP)

Domestic and overseas students enrolled in a higher degree by research at an eligible higher education provider (or HEP) in Australia are eligible for the Research Training Program. Every year, this program provides block grants to post-secondary institutions to support students enrolled in research doctorate and research master’s degrees.

If you’re an international student who’d like to apply for an RTP scholarship, you must contact your HEP for more information and application details. 

The RTP aims to:

• Offer flexible funding options for eligible domestic and international students
• Contribute to cross-sector collaboration between HEPs, industry, and other research end-users
• Deliver graduates with the necessary skills to build diverse careers in academia and industry

The duration of these scholarships vary depending on your time commitment and level of study: 

• Full-time research doctoral students: RTP grants last a minimum of three years and a maximum of four years. 
• Part-time research doctoral students: RTP grants cover a minimum of six years and a maximum of eight years.
• Full-time research master’s students: RTP scholarships last for up to two years.
• Part-time research master’s students: RTP covers up to four years.

Australia Awards

The Australia Awards offer opportunities for future leaders to pursue professional development, study, and research in Australia. These scholarships are run by the Australian Government and managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Over the 2025 academic year, they provided 1,551 long-term Australia Awards scholarships to students from 55 countries.

These include:

• Australia Awards Scholarships
• Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships
• Australia Awards Mekong-Australia Partnership
• Australia Awards Fellowships

Australia Awards Scholarships are open to postgraduate and undergraduate international students. One of their key requirements is that these students leave Australia for at least two years after graduating. This is because one of the Australia Awards’ goals is for recipients to contribute to their home countries’ resilience, development, and prosperity.

Award recipients automatically become part of the Australia Awards Alumni. This group is an influential and engaged global community of advocates and supporters, and can open new doors to international students by helping them to stay connected to Australia and other alumni.

Also, ask if your parents or family members’ employers have a scholarship program.

Failing at something can feel bad, and it’s generally something we all want to avoid. However, our IAOI alumni believe failure is a necessary part of success: 

“Failures are good stepping stones for success… A person [who immediately experiences] success will never know pain. Because if they get into any kind of trouble, they will be in a situation where they will not be able to correct [the problem]… because they [did not experience] that pain …. these kinds of pains helped me.”

“Failure is not the end of it, it is part of the process. So when you fail once, just continue. Like I tell people, you’re climbing the staircase, keep climbing, don’t look back, don’t stop, just keep going. So, if you fail, just know that it’s part of the process, it’s not the end of the world. We failed, yes, but did we get up? Yes. It’s in getting up and doing what you have to do, and making sure that you achieve that goal. I think that’s what has brought us here. And also having an open mindset, not a closed mindset. Because I keep saying that my story isn’t just about overcoming challenges. It’s about embracing opportunities for growth.”

“Really nail down the WHY behind whatever you do because until you know the WHY you will not be able to convince anyone else about giving you any opportunity, whether it be a job or anything else. I have seen students apply to 500 jobs in 1 week but still never land those opportunities and a big part of it is because almost 98% of the jobs the are applying for are not even roles they are passionate about but roles that seem like they can work for them and that lack of why is what leads them not being able to advocate for themselves.”

Below, we’ve highlighted a range of American scholarships for international students in the US. When you start your application, verify that the details are current; scholarship information can change frequently, and staying up-to-date is key to a successful application.

• Arizona State University Scholarships: Scholarships are available to incoming undergraduate students from Bermuda attending Arizona State University.
• East Tennessee State University International Scholarships: Scholarships are automatically considered for new international students applying for admission, with no separate application required.

The United Kingdom (UK) is one of the world’s most popular study destinations, but it can also be one of the most expensive. Because the UK is known for the high quality of its education system, many students consider tuition costs an investment into their futures. However, using financial aid, like scholarships, can make becoming an international student more accessible. That said, it can be hard to know which scholarships you’re eligible for, or which ones are currently available. So, we’ve rounded up some of the top UK scholarships for international students below. A.S. Hornby Trust Scholarship

The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust was established in 1961 to promote English-language teaching. This trust awards Hornby Scholarships to English language teachers from “low- and middle-income countries” so they can earn their master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in the UK. In 2024, recipients of this award will complete their MED TESOL Programme at the University of Exeter.

Applications for this scholarship are typically due in May, and scholarship recipients begin classes in September.

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening is the UK Government’s scholarship and fellowship program. This program was created to encourage future leaders to study in the UK. Since 1983, the organization has granted scholarships or fellowships to over 57,000 professionals from over 160 countries. Could you be next?

Outstanding international students enrolling in a one-year master’s degree who show high leadership potential may be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship. These scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, flights, and housing.

While future students in any one-year master’s course at an institution in the UK may apply, the Chevening Scholarships have other eligibility criteria to meet. For example, students must have at least two years of work experience, and must also return to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after graduating.

It’s important to plan ahead as the Chevening scholarship process can take up to 10 months. The next round of applications open in August 2024 and close in November.

Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) is the UK’s main scholarship initiative focused on international development. These scholarships support innovators and future leaders from across the Commonwealth who would not otherwise be able to afford studying in the UK. All Commonwealth Scholarships cover tuition fees. For UK-based study, initial travel costs, visa expenses, and a living allowance are also covered.

The CSC offers several scholarships, including:

• PhD scholarships
• Split-site scholarships
• Master’s scholarships
• Shared scholarships
• Distance learning scholarships

While each of these scholarship options have different criteria, they are generally available to students from Commonwealth countries outside the UK, including India, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Marshall Scholarships

American citizens who are starting postgraduate studies in the UK may be eligible for a Marshall Scholarship. Every year, this organization chooses up to 50 scholars to study a wide range of full-time postgraduate courses in the UK. Both one- and two-year Marshall Scholarships are available.

Note: Students in some popular degrees, like MBAs and professional degrees (law, dentistry, medicine), are not eligible for a Marshall Scholarship.

To qualify, students must:

• Hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States
• Have graduated within the last two years (i.e. 2025 Marshall Scholars must have graduated after April 2022)
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.7 in their undergraduate studies
• Demonstrate leadership and ambassadorial potential

Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship

International students beginning a full-time master’s program at any university in Wales may apply for a Global Wales Postgraduate Scholarship. These scholarships are for one year of study and are valued up to £10,000. They’re offered as a partnership between the Welsh Government, Universities Wales, The British Council, and HEFCW.

Scholarships are generally offered for courses starting in September, so the application window closes at the end of April.

Citizens of the following countries are eligible:

• Canada
• One of the countries of the European Union
• India
• The United States
• Vietnam

University-Specific Scholarships, Fellowships, and Bursaries

What are the Women in STEM Awards?

The Women in STEM Awards help to #InspireInclusion by granting a total of C$15,000 in scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to six female-identifying international students starting a post-secondary study program this fall in Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States. 

Award winners will be selected by education advisors who work with ApplyBoard to connect students with study programs across the world. Scholarship winners will be contacted later this year, and we’re excited to see where they’ll go!

By pursuing studies in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (also known as STEM fields), these women will gain the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive impact on our world.

Why Do the Women in STEM Awards Matter?

Studying internationally is an investment—and one, given the ongoing gender pay gap, that many women will work longer to pay off. In 2024, the World Bank observed that women still only earn $0.77 for every $1 a man does. These awards are a small way to ease some of the financial pressure these international students may feel. These are just two of the inventions women in STEM fields have come up with. We can’t wait to be inspired by (and benefit from) what the next generation of learners will create.

When we inspire inclusion, we help to create a better world. But how do we get started? How do we keep going past International Women’s Day? You don’t need to throw a big event, though that’s always fun! Sometimes, it’s small actions which can add up to make an even larger difference.

Here are some ways you can inspire inclusion:

• Celebrate your team’s or friends’ accomplishments!
• Learn what microaggressions are, and avoid using them (for example, asking only women to do admin work, like taking minutes).
• Names matter—learn how to spell them, learn how to say them, and work to get them right. The same is true of someone’s pronouns.
• Become a mentor or coach. Your experience is valuable!
• Use apps like Gender Decoder to make job descriptions more gender-neutral.
• In a workplace, encourage managers to have 1-to-1 meetings with their direct reports, to build trust across functions.
• When testing something new, ask for opinions from a wide range of people; consider factors like age, gender, race, and ability.
• Support (or advocate for) flexible work policies, like flexible work scheduling, or remote/hybrid positions.

Although studying in Canada is more affordable than in many other countries, it can still get quite expensive for international students. With tuition often costing tens of thousands of dollars per year, many students are on tight budgets. Here’s the good news: there are so many Canadian scholarships for international students studying in Canada, and you owe it to yourself to research and apply for them!

Scholarships are a great way to bring your college or university costs down, but the way these awards work can sometimes be confusing. To help you make sense of the various kinds of financial aid available, in this article, we’ve broken down the different types of international student scholarships in Canada!

Merit Scholarships in Canada

A merit scholarship is awarded based on a student’s level of success and does not take financial status into consideration. These awards are typically given out to students with a high level of achievement in academics, athletics, the arts, or outstanding community work.

University/College Scholarships

Most universities and colleges offer their own scholarships to students. Many of these are entrance scholarships, meaning students don’t need to apply in order to be considered for the award. Always be sure to check your institution’s website to see what kind of financial aid they offer.

Financial Scholarships in Canada

Also known as bursaries, financial scholarships are given to students who demonstrate financial need. Almost many of these awards are only available to Canadian residents, there are some for international students as well. Again, check with your university or college to see if you are eligible.

Government-funded Canadian Scholarships

These are international student scholarships made available by the Canadian government. These government scholarships are available at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Searching online for “international student scholarships Canada” isn’t the best way to find them, though. Instead, visit EduCanada to search for available Canadian scholarships, fellowships, and other funding opportunities.

Country-based Scholarships

A Country-based scholarship is awarded to students from specific developing countries or regions. For example, the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program (CCSEP), which benefits Chinese scholars, or the Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for the Green Economy Scholarships Program, which is specifically for students from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Privately Funded Scholarships

There are many businesses and private donors who set up scholarships for students. Often, these awards are targeted towards particular areas of study, so check with your faculty organization to see if there are any available at your school.

Graduate Scholarships

In addition to undergraduate scholarships, there are many financial awards available to students studying at the graduate level. A few popular ones in Canada include:

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

One of Canada’s most lucrative scholarships, this award is for doctoral students. It’s worth C$50,000 per year for three years, and can be used towards a doctoral degree or combined masters and Ph.D. The Canadian government introduced the Vanier Scholarship to help attract and retain world-class Ph.D. students, and establish Canada as a global leader in research and higher education.

Only 166 of these scholarships are awarded each year. Students must demonstrate academic excellence, research potential, and leadership qualities in order to be eligible.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are for international students in postgraduate natural and social sciences or health sciences. The fellowship is valued at C$70,000 per year, for a maximum of two years. 70 fellowships are awarded each year, with a total of up to 140 awards active at any time. NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships

NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships are for international students in postgraduate natural science or engineering programs. Their award values vary, but the Doctoral program, as an example, provides qualifying students with C$21,000 per year for three years. For further details, visit NSERC’s official website.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship is funded by the provincial government and is a merit-based scholarship available to all students—including international students—in all disciplines of academic study. The award is valued at C$10,000 for two consecutive study terms, or C$15,000 for three consecutive study terms.

To qualify, students must:

• Be enrolled in graduate studies at the master’s or doctoral level.
• Be enrolled in a full-time program for two or more terms (21 to 52 weeks in total) for the academic year you’re submitting your application for.
• Attend one of the following participating Ontario institutions:

Over the last decade, the defining story of international education has arguably been the explosive growth in the number of Indian students abroad. Could Nigeria be the sleeping giant of the coming decade?

Nigeria is already a top 10 market for Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. And Nigeria projects to become the world’s third-largest country by population by 2050.¹ But, Nigerian students have encountered obstacles to each destination country, which has hurt each country’s ability to sustain rapid growth from Nigeria. Given the already high interest Nigerian students show for international study programs, as well as the country’s expected population growth in the coming years, destination markets that solve barriers to entry will establish a competitive advantage for attracting talented students in the decades to come.

Surveys show that students now prioritize a positive and successful study abroad experience over an institution’s location or ranking.² Community ties and career opportunities in a destination market are more important than ever before for attracting international students.

When we published our 2021 Trends Report back in November, we highlighted Nigeria as a top projected emerging market. Investments made now that support international students can create sustainable and scalable market growth: more students arriving in the present establishes communal connections, which helps lead to even larger numbers of students arriving in the future. That’s why today, we’re publishing an update on Nigerian students studying in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. We’re covering how student flows to and from these countries have shifted, what barriers exist for Nigerian students, what enrolled students are studying, and much more.

Where Are Nigerian Students Studying?

Comparing the number of Nigerian students enrolled in higher education in Canada, the US, and the UK over the past seven years, we see nearly identical growth in Canada and the US while the UK experienced a U-shaped recovery.

Brexit clearly hurt the UK’s ability to welcome Nigerian students. Nigerian enrollment in higher education plummeted, no doubt in part to the government actively reducing immigration targets in 2015 as well as the anti-immigration rhetoric surrounding Brexit. In 2017/18, 69% fewer Nigerians studied in the UK compared to 2014/15.³

Canada and the US took advantage of the UK’s drop. Nigerian enrollment in Canadian postsecondary schools increased by 39% from 2014/15 to 2017/18.⁴ The US grew its Nigerian student population by 19% over the same period—and that’s excluding students in Optional Practical Training (OPT).⁵

Yet, both countries may look back and wish they had more proactively recruited students from Nigeria while Brexit put the UK at a competitive disadvantage. The number of postsecondary Nigerian students in both Canada and the US has been relatively stagnant since 2016/17. The UK, however, has shifted its policy decisions and come roaring back as a destination for international students. In 2020/21, the number of students from Nigeria in the UK was nearly double that in 2018/19.

Let’s dive a little deeper into each destination.

Students from Nigeria Studying in Canada: Increased Student Visa Interest Offset by Age Barrier

While the number of Nigerian students in Canada has stagnated since 2016/17, early indicators suggest an uptick in 2021. The chart below shows that Nigerian interest in studying in Canada has never been higher.

Last year, more than 21,000 study permit applications were submitted to Canada from Nigerian students. This represented growth of 80% compared to the previous year, and was more than double the total from 2016. Interestingly, a similar spike occurred in 2019, but study permit approvals did not rise alongside the renewed interest due to lower approval rates.

Still, a substantial gap exists between the number of study permit applications from Nigerian students and the number of approvals. One possible reason for this low approval rate could be age favouritism. We’ve previously noted a strong negative correlation between student age and approval rates to study in Canada.⁶ With the chart below, you can filter to see the approval rate for Canadian postsecondary permits approved by age for both Nigerian students and the rest of the world:

While the age barrier exists for students from every country, Nigeria is impacted at a worse rate than the global average. Nigerian students the age of 19 and under have historically been nearly twice as likely to be accepted for a Canadian postsecondary study permit than those between the ages of 20 and 25. And the difference gets only more stark from there.

Many Nigerian students often finish secondary studies when they are 20. Also, postgraduate applicants are usually close to the age of 30 because Nigerian colleges and universities often extend beyond a four-year window, and postsecondary graduates are required to serve one year in the National Youth Service Corps. Thus, the age barrier creates a particularly unfair hurdle for many Nigerian students looking to study in Canada.

There is some good news in this data. Nigerian students 19 and under have a much higher chance of being accepted for a Canadian postsecondary study permit than the overall approval rate indicates. And, as the chart below shows, Nigerian students in the K-12 range are accepted into Canada at high rates, nearly 70% in 2021.

Students from Nigeria Studying in the US: A Decade of Growth

While the number of students enrolled in the US in 2020/21 was not much higher than 2016/17 (a little over 1%), a wider timeline shows significant growth over the last decade.

There were 68% more Nigerian students enrolled in US higher education last year than in 2011/12. This growth has been a steady trend, as the number of students from Nigeria increased in seven of the last 10 academic years. And, what’s more, the chart below shows that Nigeria’s enrollment growth has outpaced the average growth from the rest of the world:

In seven of the last eight years, Nigeria’s enrollment growth exceeded the average from the rest of the world. This is particularly impressive as enrollment growth began slowing in the US in 2015/16: the ups-and-downs of a single country would be expected to see more volatility than a global average, such as the sharp V-shaped progression between 2016/17 and 2018/19.

Unfortunately, US embassies in Nigeria experienced some of the most severe student visa interview wait times in the world during the pandemic. This means that the Nigerian market will likely be slower to recover than others moving forward. Below you can see how student visa wait times grew in Nigeria and the rest of Africa in 2021 and early 2022.

Students from Nigeria Studying in the UK: Return to Prominence After Anti-Immigration Barriers Lessened

As we saw above, Canada and the US experienced a significant pandemic-related decline in Nigerian student inflows. But the UK has actually increased its Nigerian student population since the pandemic. The chart below shows the number of students from Nigeria enrolled in higher education in the UK, and you can filter by region:

In 2020/21, more than 21,300 international students in the UK were from Nigeria, making the country a top 3 source market behind only China and India. This was the first time Nigeria entered the top 3 since 2014/15. In between these two academic years, Nigeria fell out of the top 5 and nearly out of the top 10.

In our discussion with ApplyBoard Advisory Board Member Nick Hillman, Nick stated that the UK hurt itself for several years as governments in 2011 and 2015 sought to reduce immigration, and failed to offer students post-graduate work opportunities. But aided by the introduction of the Graduate Route (GR), the UK was able to hit its 2030 target for immigration nine years ahead of schedule.

Interestingly, Northern Ireland may be the biggest regional winner of the UK’s more welcoming policy changes. Nigerian enrollment in Northern Ireland grew nearly 700% in just two years, from 2018/19 to 2020/21.

What Are Nigerian Students Studying?

One of the more exciting data points we found relates to Nigerian study preferences, or lack thereof. Nigerian students flock to all fields of study, and all study levels. Nigeria may thus be a key source market for reducing overreliance on certain study levels or fields. Let’s dive deeper.

Students From Nigeria Diversifying University and College Programs in Canada

In Canada, Nigerian students are fairly diversified in the study level and fields they pursue, as the chart below shows:

University studies represented more than half of the number of study permits approved for Nigerian students in 2021. But 46% of those permits were for undergraduate students, and another 41% were for master’s students. These two study levels accounted for 26% and 23% of all study permits approved for Nigerian students. With college representing 28%, no individual study level dominates over others.

Additionally, with 13% market share in the K-12 sector, it’s clear that many Nigerian students come to Canada with their kids, or are comfortable sending their secondary school-aged children to study in Canada. The “other studies” sector includes private language schools, language programs offered by colleges and universities, and certain vocational programs offered only in the province of Quebec.

As with study levels, Nigerian students are interested in all fields of study:

Over the past six years, no field of study accounted for less than 10% or more than 30% of study permits for Nigerian students—in fact, 2021 was the first year that a field of study was over 25%. Study permits for every field of study grew to new highs in 2021. Some fields are growing at a faster rate than others, with business & management leading the way at 89% year-over-year growth in 2021, closely followed by computing & IT at 75%.

The Government of Canada has set high diversification goals for 2024, and Nigeria may be a key market for achieving those goals since Nigerian students are attracted to a wide range of study levels and fields.

Students from Nigeria Attracted to STEM in the US

STEM programs are the dominant field of study for international students in the US, including for students from Nigeria. The US features a large volume of top-tier research and technical institutions, and STEM graduates are eligible for an extra two years of work experience under OPT.

In total, 63% of Nigerian students in the US studied or worked in STEM.⁷ This was an increase of six percentage points compared to the 2015/16 academic year. However, of the top 25 countries sending international students to the US, Nigeria’s 63% of students in STEM ranked only sixth highest.⁸ All five countries ahead of Nigeria had over 70% of their students involved with STEM. This means that Nigerian students should expect fierce competition for scholarships and postgraduate work opportunities in this field.

Interestingly, just 12% of Nigerian students studied or worked in business & management in the US. This is less than half the market share of Nigerian students approved for the same field of study in Canada.

Students from Nigeria Cover Many Fields of Study in the UK

Like Canada, Nigerian students enroll in diverse fields of study in the UK. Business & management led the way with 29% of Nigerian enrollments, followed by engineering at 17%. The chart below breaks down the diversity in full:

Comparing the 2019/20 academic year to 2016/17, we see some small shifts in what Nigerian students chose to study in the UK. Business & management, and arts, humanities, & social sciences both increased their market share by three percentage points. Math & computer science grew by two percentage points.

Engineering shifted the most, dropping five percentage points. Other studies fell by three percentage points, as Nigerian students enrolled in law dropped three percentage points.

Reducing Barriers to Accessing Education Key to Unlocking Nigeria’s Massive Potential

With Nigeria poised to become the world’s third-largest population by 2050, and Nigerian students interested in all forms of education, the destination countries that reduce barriers to education the fastest stand to gain decades-long benefits for attracting talent.

With its recent policy shift toward immigration, the UK returned to prominence as a leading destination for Nigerian students. In speaking with our recruitment partners in Nigeria, we heard that many students from Nigeria find the application and enrollment process easier for the UK than for Canada and the US, with fewer requirements and more pathway and foundation options for those with low GPAs.

For Canada and the US, one of the most significant barriers to address is the age discrepancy in the approval rate process. This obstacle ultimately hurts a destination market’s long-term ability to attract talent, as students are more likely to choose study locations with communal ties.⁹ With many Nigerian students looking to enter higher education during their twenties, the destination countries that eliminate this age discrepancy in their approval rate process will create a long-term competitive advantage for attracting Nigerian talent.

Another issue with attracting Nigerian talent is the fluctuation of global economies. While COVID-19 impacted international education across the board, the decline of Nigerian enrollment in Canada and the US during 2020/21 is a bit more complicated than students simply not wanting to risk studying abroad. The Nigerian naira was devalued twice in 2021, weakening the value of the naira against the US dollar. This makes tuition fees more expensive for Nigerian students, and has led many parents to withdraw their children from international study in favour of local, private institutions.¹⁰ Issues with paying fees are already a top concern for Nigerian students, and the decline of the naira only adds to that complexity.

Canada’s Need For Substantive Change

The CBC recently reported that IRCC commissioned an external firm to investigate if implicit racism is influencing study permit approval rates. The external firm’s findings were shocking and disappointing, and are an important first step towards transparency. We’re hearing from our recruitment partners helping students that they are looking for more transparency in rejection reasons, as well.

We believe the Nigeria to Canada pipeline would be strengthened by adding Nigeria to the Student Direct Stream. The data also shows that Nigerian students are more adversely affected by age favouritism than the average for the rest of the world. Re-examining the age discrepancy for applicant approval rates could open the door for Canada to attract much more talent from around the world, including from Nigeria.

9. For instance, when we examined how international students gravitate toward large metropolitan areas in the US, we found that Dallas attracts a surprisingly large number of Nepali students. The city became a top area for Nepali and Nepal-born Bhutanese refugees to settle following the Bhutanese refugee crisis in the early 1990s. Thus, establishing these communal ties positively impacted the city of Dallas for multiple decades.
