<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Primary and Secondary Schools</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/plan-your-studies/australias-education-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">welcomes international students as young as five years old</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, including the children of international tertiary-level students. </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children between the ages of 5 and 10 </span><a href="https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-to-enrol-in-the-nsw-international-student-program-primary-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">must live with a parent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> while in Australia.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children aged 11 or 12 may live with a parent </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">or</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> direct relative approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the primary and secondary school year generally begins in late January or early February, you&#8217;ll need to check with each school for their specific start date.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the primary and secondary levels, the school year is divided into four terms, which usually begin in January (Term 1), April (Term 2), July (Term 3), and October (Term 4). There are set holiday times between each term to give students a break from their studies.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students can enrol in primary school (kindergarten to Year 6) during any term. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are no English-language entry requirements for primary school children from kindergarten to Year 6. However, international students who are 12 or older may need to enrol at an </span><a href="https://www.deinternational.nsw.edu.au/study-options/intensive-english-centres-iec" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Intensive English Centre</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> before they can enrol in Year 7 at an Australian school.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">English Language Courses</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To improve your English language skills while in Australia, you may take an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (or ELICOS) programme. Course length ranges from 5 to 60 weeks, depending on your skill level and academic goals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">ELICOS courses are structured in weeks rather than semesters, and have multiple start dates throughout the year. This flexibility helps ELICOS courses fit into the lives of many international students.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To allow enough time to have your student visa processed, it&#8217;s wise to apply for your ELICOS course five to six months before it begins. While around 50% of student visas for this study level took as little as two weeks to process as of February 2026, processing could also take </span><a href="https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-processing-times/global-visa-processing-times" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">up to four months</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pathway and Foundation Courses</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These kinds of courses provide the skills international students need to thrive in higher education programs. Pathway courses include English-language preparation, Foundation studies, and international master&#8217;s qualifying programmes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students taking a </span><b>Foundation academic year</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will usually </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/plan-your-studies/australias-education-system#:~:text=Foundation%20academic%20year%20dates%C2%A0" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">start their course in February</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The year is organized by semesters, which can have different lengths depending on the course.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students pursuing an </span><b>English for Academic Purposes</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (EAP) course must check with their institution to see when these courses begin. At some institutions, EAP is offered in Semester 1 (a February/March start), Semester 2 (a July start), and during the summer semester, which often starts in November. However, at other institutions, EAP offerings are more limited.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Vocational Education and Training</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses provide students with practical learning opportunities so that they can graduate, job-ready, with learnings aligned to </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/plan-your-studies/australias-education-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">over 500 different careers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Many VET courses include work-integrated learning opportunities like placements or industry partnerships.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">VET courses range from one to four years in length, and their academic years are structured as either two semesters or four terms. Most courses begin in late January or early February, though start dates vary.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23113" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Circle_7-300x300.png" alt="A male international student sits on concrete steps of a campus building with a silver laptop on his lap. <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Higher Education</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The academic year at universities and non-university higher education providers can </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/plan-your-studies/australias-education-system#:~:text=vary%20by%20course).-,Higher%20education%C2%A0,-Universities%20and%20non" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">vary by study level</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the </span><b>undergraduate level</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (think bachelor&#8217;s or vocational degrees), the academic year is often divided up into <strong><em>two semesters</em></strong>. Courses usually </span><a href="https://universitiesaustralia.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Academic-calendar-2026-27.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">begin in the autumn session</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which begins in late February or early March. Applications for autumn intake open in August or September, and it&#8217;s wise to apply early, as popular programs can fill up quickly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Alternatively, students can enrol in the spring semester (July/August intake), with applications opening in January or February. Verify specific dates with your target institutions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Note that some academic institutions use a </span><em><b>trimester model</b></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">, where the summer session or trimester is a formal teaching period for all students. The summer session start date varies—for example, for the 2025/26 academic year, it </span><a href="https://universitiesaustralia.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Academic-calendar-2026-27.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">will range from September 2 to December 14</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. So, if your institution uses this model, you&#8217;ll want to check directly with the admissions team to understand what your academic year looks like.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><b>postgraduate or master&#8217;s level</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> works similarly, with the academic year usually divided into two semesters starting in February or March (autumn session) and July or August (spring session). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the </span><b>doctoral degree level</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, you&#8217;ll negotiate your course start date with a doctoral degree supervisor. Generally, there</span> <a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/plan-your-studies/australias-education-system#:~:text=and%20education%20provider-,Doctoral%C2%A0,-Length%20%2D%203%20years" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">isn&#8217;t a set start date for your course</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, as most doctoral candidates don&#8217;t attend regular classes.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-17689 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia-150x150.png" alt="Flag of Australia." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/australia.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Looking Forward</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Studying in Australia is an exciting, life-changing opportunity. To ensure a smooth start to your journey, keep these things in mind:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Understand key deadlines, and plan your timeline accordingly</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Reach out to your target institutions&#8217; admissions teams to understand intake and submission dates. You put a lot of work in your study abroad application, and being delayed by a semester because you missed a deadline would be disappointing.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Apply early</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Australia is a popular destination for students around the world, and popular courses can fill up quickly.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Give yourself lots of time to get your applications ready</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Assembling everything you need for your course and student visa applications can be surprisingly time-consuming. This is especially true if you need to assemble a portfolio or have any documents translated.</span></li>
</ul>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel Insurance in the US</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel insurance protects you and your belongings as you travel from your home country to the US. While it isn&#8217;t required, it&#8217;s still a good idea for international students to consider buying a travel insurance plan.</span></p>
<p><strong>A typical travel insurance plan includes:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Medical expenses in the case of an accident or illness</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Reimbursement (up to a set amount) for the damage or loss of baggage and belongings</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Personal liability: If you cause property damage or injury to someone else while traveling, the insurance company will pay for consequential losses up to a set amount</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trip disruption: For example, if your connecting flight is delayed, travel insurance will cover the cost of your accommodation and food during your wait time</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The cost of bringing a family member or friend to stay with you if you&#8217;re hospitalized</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not all plans cover all of these circumstances. It’s important to research beforehand, so you understand which travel insurance plans suit your needs.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some credit cards include travel insurance, so check with your bank to see if you&#8217;re already covered!</span></p></blockquote>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-23917 size-medium" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1-300x300.png" alt="Two international students work together at a laptop in a sunny library space." width="300" height="300" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Circle_1.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Health Insurance in the US</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When budgeting for living expenses, set aside money for health insurance. It might not be mandatory, depending on your visa class (more on that below), but your academic institution may require you to buy an insurance plan before you can enroll in classes. Either way, health insurance is a smart purchase.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2026, </span><a href="https://cksaksens.com/global/en-us/international-student-health-insurance-in-the-u-s-2026-whats-really-covered-and-how-to-choose-the-right-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">health insurance typically costs from US$1,200 to US$4,000 per year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, depending on whether you purchase through your academic institution or a private provider. Private plans can be less expensive, but may only work at a smaller group of health care facilities.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though this may sound expensive, medical costs in the US can add up fast. For example, depending on the level of care, a trip to the emergency department of a mid-sized hospital in 2025 </span><a href="https://www.bch.org/documents/Emergency/ED-Visit-cost-2025-v1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">cost between US$450 and US$5,200</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">—and that doesn&#8217;t include fees for Emergency Department physicians. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even a flu shot can </span><a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2025/12/14/how-much-is-a-flu-shot-without-insurance/87623133007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">cost up to US$125</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for folks without insurance, although you can find no- and low-cost options for common vaccines at doctors&#8217; offices, pharmacies, and through schools or community organizations.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To have enough time to research different plans and set one up, we recommend starting to look at different health insurance options four to five months before you arrive in the US.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Health Insurance for International Students with F and M Visas</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students holding F and M student visas must cover all medical costs incurred during their time in the US. Wondering which visa you&#8217;ll need? Here&#8217;s how the U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlines </span><a href="https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/guide-to-studying-in-the-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">eligibility for each visa class</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>F-1 visa:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> For students taking an academic program, including English language programs, at an academic institution (including universities, colleges, high schools, private elementary schools, conservatories, and seminaries).</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>M-1 visa:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> For students completing a technical program at a vocational or other recognized non-academic institution. NOT for language training programs.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many </span><a href="https://www.ice.gov/sevis" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Student and Exchange Visitor Program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">-certified colleges and universities have their own health insurance plans, and will enroll new international students into these plans automatically. Though this means less paperwork for you, speak with your</span> <a href="http://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/what-is-a-designated-school-official" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">designated school official</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to understand how your insurance works. (For example, verify coverage for dental care if you plan to play contact sports.) If your campus health plan doesn&#8217;t include something you think is important, you can purchase additional private health insurance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To make accessing health care easier, many colleges and universities have an on-campus health centre. They offer general medical care to students, including first aid treatment for minor injuries and illnesses. </span></p>
<h3>Health Insurance for International Students with J Visas</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa is for students participating in an academic exchange program at the high school or university level. J-1 exchange visitors and any J-2 dependents must have adequate health insurance coverage for the full duration of their visa. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To protect international students and their families, minimum levels of health insurance coverage have been established by the federal government. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As of 2026, at minimum, </span><a href="https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-G/part-62/subpart-A/section-62.14" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">health insurance coverage must provide</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Medical benefits of at least US$100,000 per illness or accident (higher is better)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">A maximum deductible of US$500 per condition per plan year</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to their home country up to US$50,000</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Minimum 75% coverage for each accident or illness (which means the student pays up to 25% of expenses but no more)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Repatriation of remains up to US$25,000</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Additionally, the insurance company underwriting the policy </span><a href="https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-G/part-62/subpart-A/section-62.14#:~:text=d),and%20Human%20Services." target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">must have specific credentials</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to ensure students are adequately protected. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your health insurance as a J visa holder must be current and adequate for your entire time in the US. In fact, US government regulations require that J visas are terminated if a J-1 exchange visitor or their J-2 dependent willfully fails to remain in compliance with insurance requirements.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now that you have a basic understanding of US health and travel insurance, </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/quick_search?countries%5B%5D=USA&amp;only_direct=false&amp;sort_by=relevance&amp;v=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">search for study opportunities in the US on the ApplyBoard platform</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">!</span></p></blockquote>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Creating Your Academic Roadmap</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Consider starting your research as early as 24 months before your desired program’s start date. A good way to start is by talking with people you know who have worked or studied in Canada. Learn about their experiences, and ask them what they wish they knew before arriving. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With 20 months to go, continue researching and/or working with your student advisor to create a list of top programs. Understanding specific program requirements can help you determine which tests you should take before applying. These tests could include postgraduate standardized tests, </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/practicing-for-your-english-proficiency-test" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">English language proficiency tests</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> like TOEFL and IELTS, or French language proficiency tests like </span><a href="https://www.lefrancaisdesaffaires.fr/en/tests-diplomas/test-for-evaluating-french-tef/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Test d’Evaluation du Français</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (TEF) and </span><a href="https://apprendre.tv5monde.com/fr/tcf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Test de Connaissance du Français</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (TCF).</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Understanding Postgraduate Standardized Tests </span></h2>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The GRE </span><a href="https://www.kaptest.com/gre/what-is-the-gre" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">measures a student’s readiness for postgraduate study</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. There are two types of GRE: a </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">General Test</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and a </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Subject Test</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GRE General Test</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a multiple-choice exam which takes around two hours to complete. You may complete it at a test centre, or online with a virtual proctor. It assesses your: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Verbal reasoning</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Quantitative reasoning</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Analytical writing skills </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The GRE is adaptive, which means that how you score in early sections will affect how easy or hard later sections are. Your GRE scores are valid for five years.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.ets.org/gre/subject/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GRE Subject Tests</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are for students with an extensive background or undergraduate major in a specific discipline. Taking a GRE Subject Test can help you highlight your subject knowledge and stand out. GRE Subject Tests are available for: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Math</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Physics</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Psychology </span></li>
</ul>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/education/student-resources/guide-to-gmat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GMAT</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a standardized test for master&#8217;s of business administration (MBA) applicants. While some business schools also accept GRE scores, if you’re pursuing a future in consulting, management, or logistics, the GMAT may be a better fit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Its sections include:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Analytical writing assessment (essay format)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Integrated reasoning</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Quantitative reasoning (algebra, arithmetic, and geometry)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Verbal reasoning</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before you write the GMAT, note that you’ll be given two minutes at the end of the test to accept or cancel your score. So, go into the test with a target score in mind, and understand whether your chosen schools require your best score or all scores from multiple attempts. </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">How to Prepare for Graduate Admissions Tests</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To better understand each test’s timing and style, take online practice tests. Once you take the GRE or GMAT, if you don&#8217;t like your score, both tests may be re-taken. However, each attempt requires a payment of the exam fee—so use the free practice tests, and don’t treat the actual test day like practice. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We recommend taking the GRE or GMAT 15 to 18 months before your chosen institution’s intake date. This gives you time for retakes, if needed, and ensures your scores arrive before application deadlines. </span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Assembling Your Program Applications</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With 12 to 13 months to go, start assembling your applications. A good way to start is by drafting your statements of interest or personal statements. These statements allow you to highlight your research interests, how your education has prepared you for success in this program, and why you’ve chosen a specific program.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, start assembling a resume and a portfolio of work, if you’re applying to a program that requires one. Programs like architecture, software engineering, and design may ask for portfolios. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To obtain certified copies of academic transcripts, reach out to the institution where you completed your undergrad. Processing times can vary, so it’s wise to request these as soon as possible.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, contact past professors or employers to request letters of recommendation. Ask for references </span><a href="https://uwaterloo.ca/social-development-studies/getting-academic-letter-reference-post-graduate-studies" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">from people who will give you a strong, personalized reference</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, as a general letter can hurt your chances of being accepted. Let references know which institutions you’re applying to, the deadlines, and what’s required of them, so they can write the best letter possible.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Submitting Your Applications</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once your application materials are ready, start applying. </span><b>We recommend starting to apply for programs 9 to 10 months before you want to begin your studies</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This gives you enough time to apply for immigration documents. For example, to apply for a </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/what-international-students-need-to-apply-for-a-canadian-study-permit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Canadian study permit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, you’ll need a Letter of Acceptance, which can take up to two months to be issued.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&#8217;s good to know when each program’s application deadlines are, and which intakes align with your target programs. Many programs start exclusively in September.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Canadian academic institutions have up to three yearly intakes:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Fall:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Application deadlines are between January and March. The semester starts in September.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Summer:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Application deadlines range between January and March, with the semester starting in May.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Winter:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Application deadlines range between September and November. The semester starts in January.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some institutions have </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">rolling intakes</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This means classes start every couple of months. Other schools offer <em>rolling admission</em>, where incoming applications are processed as they are received, and programs close once filled.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Common program application requirements:</span></h3>
<ul>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Institution Responses and Student Visas</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With four to five months to go, you should be hearing back from the institutions you applied to. Now, work independently or with an international student advisor to make your program selection, accept and return the offer, and pay a deposit if required. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Study permits can take multiple weeks, even a few months, to process. So, it&#8217;s smart to start your application early. As part of the study permit application, applicants are </span><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/get-documents.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">encouraged to write a letter of explanation</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that addresses potential questions or concerns, like if you took an authorized leave from your studies, have a conditional offer of admission, or are missing a required document. These formal letters are one to two pages long, and can also speak to your study plan, travel history, and ties to your home country. Drafting this letter and gathering supporting documents can take a while, so start working on it as early as possible.</span></p>

<h2>Travel Insurance</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel insurance helps to protect you and your valuables while travelling to Australia. However, it isn&#8217;t required in order to study in Australia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A typical travel insurance plan includes:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Reimbursement for loss, damage, or destruction</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of personal belongings, including electronics like laptops, phones, and cameras</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Medical care</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> after an illness or accident (in addition to your Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Coverage for the cost</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of bringing someone to stay with you if you&#8217;re hospitalized</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Personal liability</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: for example, if you cause personal injury or property damage to someone else during your travels, insurance covers collateral damages up to a set amount</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Trip disruption</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: for example, if your connecting flight is delayed, insurance will pay for your food and accommodation while you wait for the next available flight</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Emergency evacuation and repatriation expenses</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> if you need to travel for medical treatment</span></li>
</ul>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Things to Consider</h3>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not all travel insurance plans cover the same things. Think about what you want coverage for, and research to see which plans meet your needs.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many insurance providers offer digital claims processing, which makes it easier to submit claims while abroad.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Some credit cards provide travel insurance. So, check with your bank to learn what your card benefits offer!</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">While most students will purchase travel insurance from a provider in their home country, some OSHC providers offer optional travel insurance add-ons with their health insurance plans.</li>
</ul>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23232" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1-300x300.png" alt="International student smiling at a laptop in a library" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Rectangle_1-1.png 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<h2>Health Insurance</h2>

It covers most basic medical expenses within Australia. You&#8217;ll need to apply for OSHC before you apply for a visa, as you&#8217;ll need to show proof of OSHC during your</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><a href="https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/student-500#HowTo" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">student visa application</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To make it easier to access health care, all major medical providers now offer 24/7 telehealth consultations through mobile apps. You&#8217;ll also be able to access enhanced mental health support and improved pharmaceutical benefits.</span></p>
<p>Students <b>must be covered by OSHC through their entire stay</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. If your OSHC lapses, it can </span><a href="https://oshcaustralia.com.au/en/faq/what-happens-if-my-oshc-lapses" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">lead to automatic visa cancellation</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h3>Basic OSHC coverage usually includes:</h3>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GP (general practitioner or family doctor) visits</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hospital treatment in public hospitals or agreement private hospitals</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Emergency ambulance services nationwide</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some prescription medicines</span></li>
</ul>
<h3>OSHC Doesn&#8217;t Cover:</h3>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dental care</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Optical services (glasses, contact lenses, eye exams)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Physiotherapy</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Chiropractic treatment</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cosmetic surgery</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Treatment outside Australia</span></li>
</ul>
<blockquote><p><b>Extra Coverage:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If you want coverage for dental, optical, or physiotherapy services, you can purchase &#8220;</span><a href="https://oshcaustralia.com.au/en/blog/oshc-coverage-for-extras?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21068713324&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADu7tnp-EztKnu-272X6a5ExLENh5&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAnJHMBhDAARIsABr7b85nDEtiTNcvWp8LedQ0suAnXypH5dzAsV22HEaHaLMchtu2Yqv7fmQaAjP2EALw_wcB" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Extras OSHC</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8221; or supplement your OSHC with private health insurance.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Purchasing OSHC</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can purchase OSHC through any eligible private health insurer registered in Australia. </span><b>This must be done before applying for your student visa.</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Any family members joining you in Australia must also have OSHC coverage. The policy must list the names of all covered individuals, matching their passport names exactly. Policy types include: Single, Dual (a student plus a partner <i>or</i> children), and Family (a student, their partner, <em>and</em> any dependent children under 18).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are currently six government-approved OSHC providers. They are:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.allianzcare.com.au/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Allianz Care Australia</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Peoplecare)</span></li>

</ul>
<p><b>Note:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Prices vary, so consider using comparison platforms like</span> <a href="https://oshcaustralia.com.au/en?gad_campaignid=21068713324&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADu7tnp-EztKnu-272X6a5ExLENh5&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAnJHMBhDAARIsABr7b86Wk0uT_woc7EbQaxgHcuCo4yKOqPAFf233M8knGpCioZra4UlG_p0aAmX2EALw_wcB" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">OSHC Australia</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to find the best value.</span></p>
<p>Once your insurance policy is active, y<span style="font-weight: 400;">ou can download your provider&#8217;s mobile app to make accessing health services easier. On the app, you may be able to access your digital membership cards, make a quick claim submission, conduct online doctor consultations, and see clinic locations.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your student visa is refused, most health insurance providers will offer a refund. Refund processing usually takes two to six weeks.</span></p>
<p><b>Important:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> As you travel to Australia, keep your OSHC documents in your carry-on luggage so you can access them at the port of entry. Also, save a digital copy on your phone.</span></p>

<h3>Health Exam</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some international students must complete <a href="https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health/what-health-examinations-you-need" target="_blank" rel="noopener">medical and </a></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">radiological examinations as part of the visa application</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> process. Health exams are typically required for students staying over 12 months, those entering healthcare or childcare environments, and students from countries with higher tuberculosis rates (including most South Asian countries).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The examination includes a physical check-up and chest X-ray for students aged 11 or older. The exam must be conducted by a panel doctor approved by the Department of Home Affairs using the eMedical system. </span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can find a list of government-approved doctors on the</span> <a href="https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Department of Home Affairs website</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students from Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom may access Australian Medicare under reciprocal agreements. </span><b>However, obtaining OSHC is still mandatory for your student visa</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, even if you&#8217;re eligible for Medicare.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Health and travel insurance provide international students and their families with peace of mind. However, international students are eligible for different kinds of insurance, depending on where they plan to study in Canada. In some cases, international students can access public healthcare, where in others, they may have to purchase private health care coverage from an independent provider or through their academic institution. Below, we&#8217;ll explore the difference between health and travel insurance, and take a look at which health insurance options are available in each Canadian province and territory. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;"><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Note: While this information is current as of February 2026, the legislation guiding insurance, as well as individual policy coverage, is subject to change. Always check official government sources and insurance company pages for the most up-to-date information.</span></em></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel Insurance vs Health Insurance</span></h2>
<p><b>As an international student, you must have valid health insurance coverage for your entire stay in Canada. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">How health insurance works and what it covers varies across the country.</span><b> </b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile, </span><b>travel insurance is optional</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It protects you while travelling to and from Canada, and can help if your luggage is lost or your flight is delayed. Check with your airline or insurance providers in your home country to see what travel insurance plans they offer. Some credit cards offer travel insurance as a perk, so check your card benefits too!</span></p>

Here are a few reasons why international students should study in Australia!</span></p>
<hr />
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia 101</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia is a land of contrasts. It&#8217;s the smallest continent and one of the largest countries on Earth. Australia&#8217;s geography is extremely diverse, from the snow-capped mountains of the Australian Alps and Tasmania, to large deserts, and tropical and temperate forests.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia has six states and two territories. The capital of Australia is Canberra. In the </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/tools-and-resources/tips-and-advice-for-students/qs-best-student-cities-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Top 50 QS Best Student Cities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> rankings for 2026, Melbourne ranked fifth globally and Sydney ranked sixth. Both cities consistently appear in lists of the world&#8217;s top 10 student cities. The Economist also lists </span><a href="https://www.eiu.com/n/copenhagen-replaces-vienna-as-worlds-most-liveable-city/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide among the world&#8217;s 10 best cities to live in</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, Why Study in Australia?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian degrees are highly sought-after by global employers and can open doors to an exciting future. Here are some reasons why.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get a Globally Recognized Education</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia has one of the best education systems in the world. According to the </span><a href="https://www.datapandas.org/ranking/education-rankings-by-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2025 United Nations Human Development Report&#8217;s Education Index</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, Australia&#8217;s education system ranks ninth globally, and Australians have the highest expected years of schooling in the world, at 21.1 years. The Australian education system is tightly regulated by the government to maintain its high standards. A key piece of legislation, the </span><a href="https://www.legislation.gov.au/C2004A00757/2018-06-19/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, protects international students in Australia and helps to ensure they receive appropriate academic support.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian institutions also consistently rank highly in global education rankings. In the </span><a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/student/best-universities/best-universities-australia" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, six Australian universities ranked in the top 100, with ten in the top 200. According to the </span><a href="https://www.studyaustralia.gov.au/en/why-australia/world-class-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities 2025</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, five Australian universities were in the top 100, and two-thirds of Australia&#8217;s public universities featured in the top 500.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Build a Global Career</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students can </span><a href="https://www.education.gov.au/international-education/support-international-students/rights-international-students-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">work up to 48 hours per fortnight</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (every two weeks) during term time, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks and holidays. This provides them with valuable work experience and helps to offset living costs while studying. Note that master&#8217;s by research and PhD students enjoy unlimited work rights throughout their studies.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whether the student applies for work in Australia with a Temporary Graduate visa after finishing their studies, or works elsewhere, an Australian education can open many doors. The government&#8217;s </span><a href="https://internationaleducation.gov.au/scholarships/Scholarships-and-Fellowships/alumni/Pages/default.aspx#:~:text=The%20Australia%20Global%20Alumni%20website,of%20special%20features%2C%20such%20as:" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian Global Alumni program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> also helps graduates connect with other alumni who can support their professional growth.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia Is a Great Place to Live</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">From its high quality of life to its enviable weather, here are just a few reasons why Australia&#8217;s a great place to study.</span></p>
<h3>A High Quality of Life</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian cities consistently rank amongst the </span><a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/overall-rankings" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">world&#8217;s most liveable</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, ranking highly for their residents&#8217; overall quality of life. Plus, the entire country&#8217;s quality of education, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, and government services consistently rank </span><a href="https://www.oecd.org/en/data/tools/well-being-data-monitor.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">well above international averages</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h3>Warm Weather Year-Round</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the biggest perks of studying in Australia is its weather! Australia is warm all year, but the actual weather typically </span><a href="https://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/climate_averages/climate-classifications/index.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">varies greatly between regions</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The northern parts of Australia have a more tropical climate, which is hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter. The southern parts are cooler, with mild summers and cool, rainy winters.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, when it&#8217;s summer in Australia, it&#8217;s winter in Canada, the US, India, China, and other countries above the equator.</span></p>
<h3>Effective Transportation Networks</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australia&#8217;s extensive public transportation system makes it easy for students to get around. All major towns in Australia have reliable, affordable public bus networks. Train lines also connect the five largest cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. Trams, ferries, and light-rail systems are also available in some of the major cities for longer-distance travel. All major cities also have airports with regularly scheduled flights.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many tertiary institutions subsidize the cost of local public transportation for their students. In fact, post-secondary students can save up to 50% when they purchase their transit passes with a valid student ID.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">All Australian cities and towns offer taxi services, but students can also use ride share apps.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While packing for a Canadian winter is a priority for international students, the country </span><b>isn’t</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> snow and ice all year round. Wondering what to pack for studying in Canada? For example, Calgary, Alberta lines up with London, England; St. John’s, Newfoundland and Seattle, Washington, are within 50 latitudinal kilometers; and Vancouver, British Columbia matches up with Paris, France. This means the weather across Canada is very seasonal, and much more diverse than many expect!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">No matter where you choose to study, you’ll want the right clothing for all four seasons. You’ll also want to pack your essential student and visa documents in your carry-on to streamline your student visa interview. </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/dos-and-donts-canadian-student-visa" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">For more visa application tips, check out our blog</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">!</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Packing Guidelines</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">First, visit your academic institution’s website, as it may have a custom packing list (like </span><a href="https://uwaterloo.ca/international-experience/blog/packing" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">this one</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from the University of Waterloo)! Once you’ve looked at a few lists, build your own. A custom list can make packing easier, as you can check things off your list as you go.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, learn which </span><a href="https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/declare-eng.html#_s19" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">items the Canadian Border Services Agency won’t allow through Canadian Customs</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> so you don’t pack them by mistake. Restricted or regulated items include meat products, plants, pets, and fresh fruit. While prescription drugs are allowed, they are subject to specific rules. So, if you take regular medications, you&#8217;ll want to know what the rules for bringing them into Canada are. Some medications available over-the-counter in your home country </span><b>might</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> require a prescription in Canada, and vice versa. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your pet may be able to join you in Canada, but </span><a href="https://inspection.canada.ca/importing-food-plants-or-animals/pets/eng/1326600389775/1326600500578" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">you’ll need to know the rules and fill out all necessary paperwork</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, both before you leave and at the border, to meet Canada’s import requirements. It’s a good idea to research the airports or land crossings that you’ll travel through beforehand so you know what your pet’s journey will be like, too.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Use our </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/6-tips-for-overcoming-english-language-barriers" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">6 tips for overcoming language barriers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to feel more comfortable meeting other students.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Essentials</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In your carry-on or personal item, store your passport, original identification, and all of the essential travel documents you’ll need to start your new life as a student. </span></p>
<p><strong>International student documentation includes:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Study permit documents (study permit approval letter OR valid study permit)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Original transcripts and diploma/degree certificates</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Letter of acceptance</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Temporary resident visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Proof of sufficient funds for at least the first year of study</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The address of your long-term housing in Canada</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Proof of tuition payment</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Language proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Vaccination proof or immigration medical exam results, if necessary</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Check out our </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/student-visa-canada" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">complete list of what you need to study in Canada</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Have backup photocopies of all of these documents in your luggage, and leave second copies with your family in your home country. Also ensure any medications or medical devices are in your hand luggage, so they’re within reach. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re traveling with jewelry, cash, or other valuables, keep those in your carry-on luggage, too (along with a few changes of clothes) in case your larger suitcases are lost or delayed.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What to Pack for Life in Canada</span></h2>
<p><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Canada/Climate" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Canada has a wide range of climates</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. A region’s climate can be affected by how close it is to large bodies of water (and yes, the Great Lakes count)! Nearby lakes or oceans mean more rain or snow, and even when it’s sunny, the air is humid. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In short: coastal humidity can make temperatures feel more extreme. Meanwhile, central Canada’s &#8216;dry&#8217; air often feels more manageable. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most students dress casually on campus, and classrooms are heated and air-conditioned, so they’ll have a similar temperature year-round. However, for travel between class and life outside of school, you should dress for the season. This means: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">A sweater and jeans with a light coat (and maybe rainproof boots) in the spring and fall.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Light t-shirts and shorts or skirts with sneakers in the summer. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Layers with a thick winter coat, warm boots, and gloves through the winter.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Winter clothes take up lots of space, so many international students buy winter clothes in Canada. In larger communities, visit second-hand stores or discount retailers like Winners for previous seasons’ fashions at lower prices–and regardless of where you shop, buy your gear before the first snowfall for the best selection.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Headed to a city like Edmonton, Quebec City, or Winnipeg, where winter temperatures drop below -20°C? A </span><a href="https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/how-to-choose-base-layers" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">thermal base layer</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> can help you stay warm while walking around campus or waiting for the bus. </span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Local Knowledge: Cotton dries slowly, so base layers made of merino wool or synthetic fleece are best.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students who plan to work at a </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/working-part-time" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">part-time job</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> or through a </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/co-op-placements-internships-canada" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">co-op program or internship</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> should bring some business-casual clothes. Even if your workplace is casual, one or two formal outfits are good for interviews or special events.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While most global skincare and makeup brands are available in Canada, if there’s a regional brand you like, check to see if it&#8217;s available in (or can be shipped to) Canada. If shipping is really expensive, bring a few extras from home. If you take any medications, check to see what refilling your supply looks like. Some medications which need a prescription elsewhere are over-the-counter in Canada, and vice versa.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Having something small that reminds you of back home can help you feel at home in Canada. It could be a favorite scent, book, ornament, or even a food like a hot sauce or spice mix.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With enough research and preparation, you’ll be ready for your study abroad journey. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On January 20, 2026, the UK government </span><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-uks-international-education-strategy-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">launched its new International Education Strategy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (IES). This strategy, part of the government&#8217;s broader </span><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/plan-for-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Plan for Change</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, aims to support the nation&#8217;s path to renewal by &#8220;increasing exports, supporting skilled employment, and broadening access to high-quality education provision.&#8221; It outlines how the UK&#8217;s education sector and federal government will work together, and highlights specific government priorities.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The IES is co-owned by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, the Department of Education, and the Department for Business and Trade, with support from many other departments. Read on for a closer look at the strategy&#8217;s goals and how it will support international students in 2026 and beyond.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-17688 size-thumbnail" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK-150x150.png" alt="Flag of the United Kingdom." width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/UK.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What are the Goals of the International Education Strategy?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The IES has </span><a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/696a6164448fedc1eb4248ef/international-education-strategy-2026.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">three key ambitions</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The first of these is to </span><b>increase the UK&#8217;s international standing through education at every level of study</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This goal involves:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Increasing opportunities for international research collaboration</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Boosting government leadership in transnational education (TNE)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Improving global recognition of UK-based academic qualifications</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Expanding the number of study, work, and volunteer opportunities abroad for youth in the UK</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The next ambition revolves around the </span><b>sustainable recruitment of high-quality international students from diverse countries</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The IES refers to international students as &#8220;global changemakers,&#8221; highlighting their ability to become future leaders in the UK and around the world. Ensuring international students are recruited responsibly and have a positive experience while studying in the UK are both central to this goal.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The third goal aims to expand the education sector&#8217;s productivity. By 2030, the IES aims to </span><b>grow the value of UK education exports from £32.3 billion per year (in 2022, the most recent data) to £40 billion per year</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The </span><a href="https://www.business.gov.uk/campaign/international-education-faculty/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">International Education Champion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Professor Sir Steve Smith) will drive education export growth through things like partnerships in focus countries like India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. Emerging opportunities in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Pakistan were also noted. To support this growth, UK-based education providers would receive access to financial instruments and practical support from the government.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The IES also highlighted the growth of transnational education (TNE) as a driver for education exports. Over the past decade, </span><a href="https://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/sites/default/files/field/downloads/2025-10/UUKi%20Scale%20of%20TNE%202023-24%20summary%20report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the UK&#8217;s higher education TNE headcount of in-person learners has grown by 87%</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and in the 2023/24 academic year, UK universities offered degrees in 176 countries and territories through in-person TNE. This flexible education model includes overseas campuses, online courses, and joint programmes. As TNE grows, a more diverse range of students will be able to access a UK education.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-23186" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6-300x300.png" alt="A student looks at a laptop in a sunny library, surrounded by illustrations of a checkmark, magnifying glass, and ID card" width="250" height="250" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Circle_6.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px" /></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">How Will the IES Affect International Students in the UK?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Like the </span><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/restoring-control-over-the-immigration-system-white-paper" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2025 White Paper</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><b>the IES doesn&#8217;t directly change or update any laws or government guidance related to immigration</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, the IES does refer to upcoming changes like the </span><a href="https://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/topics/international/understanding-uks-new-levy-universities" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">international student levy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This levy will initiate in August 2028 (the start of the 2028/29 academic year), and is a £925 yearly fee which will be charged to higher education providers in England for each international student enrolled at their institution. While institutions, not students, pay this fee, some English institutions may increase international tuition in parallel. Note that this future levy </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">does not</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> apply to institutions in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The IES&#8217; overall focus on sustainable recruitment levels, student quality </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> graduate outcomes, and increased student population diversity speak to the government&#8217;s aim to ensure students from around the world are able and prepared to study in the UK. This includes a dedicated drive to enhance global mobility both for its domestic and international students. The IES refers to a </span><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg4ng7ee9vwo" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">return to Erasmus+</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in 2027, which is the EU&#8217;s flagship education exchange and partnerships programme. As such, international student interest from the EU is likely to increase in the years ahead. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The strategy also reinforced support of the Turing Scheme and the US-UK Fulbright Programme. It also supports the continuation of prestigious scholarships like the Chevening, Commonwealth, and Marshall scholarship programmes.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Study UK campaign </span><a href="https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org/scholarships-funding" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">provides over 120 scholarships per year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">—could one of their scholarships support your study abroad dreams?</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Looking Forward</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Supporting international students throughout their study journey is also central to the IES. Through the Education Sector Action Group, the government will work with the higher education sector to ensure support systems are strengthened, campus infrastructure is adequate, and students have better access to local housing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prospective international students should consider the UK&#8217;s International Education Strategy more like a map than a list of instructions. Its launch illustrates government priorities and initiatives, but does not independently put any of these suggestions or changes into law.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thinking about studying in the UK? <a href="https://www.applyboard.com/recommended_programs/onboarding?fbclid=PAQ0xDSwM2WmxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp4v-9dDIEsW3vNIg_t-PVyuDbVxwLqqsnPRkcI70B2z-WWvTDanHPzK5uW5G_aem_XXe0CqccwZqyotHC61PTug&amp;utm_source=Blog_organic&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=onboarding&amp;utm_id=blog_organic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Find a course that matches your academic goals on the ApplyBoard platform</a>.</span></p></blockquote>

<h2>Which Students May Work in Ireland?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">International students usually enter Ireland with Immigration </span><a href="https://www.irishimmigration.ie/registering-your-immigration-permission/information-on-registering/immigration-permission-stamps/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stamp 2 permission</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. As an international student, you may only work while your Stamp 2 visa is valid.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&#8217;re enrolled in a full-time course that leads to a qualification recognized by the </span><a href="https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-further-and-higher-education-research-innovation-and-science/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Irish Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that&#8217;s at least one year long, you don&#8217;t need a work permit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To </span><a href="https://www.educationinireland.com/en/living-in-ireland/working-in-ireland" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">work in Ireland as an international student</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, you must:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Register and obtain your </span><a href="https://www.irishimmigration.ie/registering-your-immigration-permission/information-on-registering/irish-residence-permit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Irish Residence Permit</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (IRP) card within 90 days of arriving.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Be in a full-time programme that&#8217;s at least one year long, and at or above NFQ Level 7.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Work toward a qualification recognized by the Minister for Education and Skills.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Complete a minimum of 15 hours per week of daytime study.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Attend classes between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM for a minimum of 25 weeks per year.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><b>Note:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> When registering for your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, you&#8217;ll need to pay a fee of €300. Budget for this cost with your arrival expenses.</span></p>
<h3>TrustEd Ireland and Programme Eligibility</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your educational institution must be authorized to enrol international students. As of 2025, only institutions with </span><a href="https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-further-and-higher-education-research-innovation-and-science/press-releases/minister-odonovan-announces-trusted-ireland-a-new-international-education-mark-will-open-for-applications-in-september-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">TrustEd Ireland authorization</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> can recruit non-EEA students. This authorization helps to ensure you receive a quality education.</span></p>
<h3>NFQ, Explained</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&#8217;re wondering &#8220;what does NFQ Level 7 mean?&#8221;, it refers to a specific level of study. Ireland&#8217;s </span><a href="https://www.qqi.ie/what-we-do/the-qualifications-system/national-framework-of-qualifications" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">National Framework of Qualifications</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (NFQ) has ten levels which outline the skills and knowledge you&#8217;ll need to earn a qualification. On the NFQ scale, third-level qualifications, or post-secondary studies, range from levels 6 to 10.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here&#8217;s how post-secondary courses and NFQ levels match up:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Level 6:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Advanced Certificates and Higher Certificates</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Level 7:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Ordinary Bachelor&#8217;s Degrees</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Level 8:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Honours Bachelor&#8217;s Degrees and Higher Diplomas</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Level 9:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Master&#8217;s Degrees and Post-Graduate Diplomas</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Level 10:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Doctoral Degrees (PhD) and Higher Doctorates</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students in courses ranked Level 7 to 10 on the NFQ scale may work while studying in Ireland.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><b>Bonus Resource:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If you want to know how your current credentials match up to Irish ones, check out NARIC Ireland&#8217;s searchable</span><a href="https://qsearch.qqi.ie/WebPart/Search?searchtype=recognitions" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Foreign Qualifications Database</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p></blockquote>

<h2>How Do I Prepare for and Find Work in Ireland?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before you start working, you&#8217;ll need to get a </span><a href="https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-social-protection/services/get-a-personal-public-service-pps-number/?referrer=https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Personal-Public-Service-Number-How-to-Apply.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Personal Public Services Number</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (PPS Number), and an Irish bank account. The PPS Number is used by your employer to pay you.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your course is accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), you may already have received a PPS number, so check your acceptance package.</span></p>
<h3>Understanding Irish Taxes</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As a student working in Ireland, you&#8217;ll be subject to the </span><a href="https://www.revenue.ie/en/employing-people/becoming-an-employer-and-ongoing-obligations/guide-to-paye/the-paye-system.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">PAYE</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Pay As You Earn) income tax system. Your employer will deduct taxes from your paycheck automatically using your PPS Number. However, you may be eligible for some tax credits as a student worker, which reduces the amount of tax you&#8217;ll pay.</span></p>
<h3>On-Campus Jobs</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many international students like the convenience of working on campus. You might find work in the library, as a research or teaching assistant, in administration, or with a private on-campus business. To find on-campus jobs, check your campus&#8217; student services office or website.</span></p>
<h3>Off-Campus Jobs</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are several platforms designed for students and part-time workers to find jobs:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="http://parttime.ie" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">parttime.ie</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Specializes in flexible, part-time positions ideal for students</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="http://studentjob.ie" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">StudentJob.ie</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – A dedicated platform for student employment opportunities</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://gradireland.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GradIreland</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Excellent for internships and graduate-level opportunities</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can also use general job-hunting platforms like</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">LinkedIn and Indeed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&#8217;s also wise to check in with your campus career centre when job hunting off-campus. They&#8217;ll know good local businesses to apply for, and can help you polish up your resume, or practice interview skills.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ireland&#8217;s minimum wage has increased to </span><b>€14.15 per hour as of January 2026 </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">for workers aged 20 and up</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Don&#8217;t accept a lower wage. Also, Ireland does not have a lower &#8220;tipping wage,&#8221; which is where some employees earn a lower base salary which is supplemented by tips. Also, as of December 2022, it is &#8220;</span><a href="https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/pay-and-employment/tips-gratuities-service-charges/#:~:text=The%20Payment%20of%20Wages%20(Amendment)%20(Tips%20and%20Gratuities)%20Act%202022%20came,employers%20to%20use%20tips%20or%20gratuities%20to%20make%20up%20basic%20wages." target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">illegal for employers to use tips or gratuities to make up basic wages</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8221; in Ireland.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ace your job interviews with these </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/job-interview-tips" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">interview tips for international students</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23249" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1-300x300.png" alt="An international student smiles while holding a book in a library" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Circle_3-1.png 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<h2>What if I Have an Internship?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you plan to pursue an internship or work placement:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your academic institution must ensure the work placements complement your programme.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Work placements must be a central part of the programme, but cannot be longer than 50% of its length. (So, a three-year programme may have a single placement or multiple placements that are collectively up to one and a half years long.)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Self-employment doesn&#8217;t count as a work placement or internship.</span></li>
</ul>

<h2>How Much Can I Work?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For most of the year, if you&#8217;re a student with Stamp 2, you may work up to 20 hours per week. However, during the summer months (June 1 to September 30) and from December 15 to January 15, you can work up to 40 hours per week.</span></p>

<h2>Can I Work in Ireland After Graduating?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You may be eligible to stay in Ireland after you graduate under the Irish </span><a href="https://www.educationinireland.com/en/living-in-ireland/working-in-ireland#:~:text=Post%20Study%20Pathways%20for%20International%20Students" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Third Level Graduate Scheme</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> if you graduate from a course ranked Level 8, 9, or 10 on the NFQ scale.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Third Level Graduate Scheme allows non-EU post-secondary graduates to look for work or apply for a work permit. The length of time you&#8217;re approved for may depend on the course you&#8217;ve completed.</span></p>
<p><b>Important:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> You must apply for the Third Level Graduate Scheme within six months of receiving your final exam results.</span></p>
<h3>Level 8 Graduates</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Generally, non-EEA students who graduate from a Level 8 course may stay in Ireland for up to 12 months.</span></p>
<h3>Level 9 or 10 Graduates</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Graduates with a Level 9 or 10 course may stay for up to a total of 24 months. Your visa will be granted as an initial 12-month period, which can be renewed for an additional 12 months. If you&#8217;re accepted to the Third Level Graduate Scheme, you may work full-time (up to 40 hours/week).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2026, Ireland is focusing on retaining talent in &#8220;critical skills&#8221; areas like AI, Sustainable Energy, and Healthcare. If you find a job in these sectors, you may be able to transition from a Stamp 1G to a </span>Critical Skills Employment Permit<span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><b>Remember:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> You&#8217;ll have limited time to find a job after finishing your course, so we recommend applying for jobs well before graduating.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With Ireland&#8217;s status as a tech hub on the rise, there are lots of great job opportunities for </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/why-stem-students-should-study-in-ireland" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">international student graduates, especially those in STEM fields</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p></blockquote>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the first things international students notice when studying in Germany is how much control they have over their academic journey. This can be an advantage, as it allows you to customize your academic schedule. But the process can also be confusing, especially when you first arrive. Below, we&#8217;ll dive into how study programmes are structured, what the average class load is per semester, and some resources students can use as they prepare for each term.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Types of Academic Programmes in Germany</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Germany&#8217;s academic institutions support learning across a wide variety of fields. In fact, over 17,000 bachelor&#8217;s and master&#8217;s degree programmes are </span><a href="https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/universities/the-right-degree-programme/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">offered across the country</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">! </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tip: To understand how degrees you&#8217;re considering compare to others in that field of study, check out the </span><a href="https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/universities/che-ranking/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Centre for Higher Education (CHE)&#8217;s yearly rankings by subject</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before starting your degree, it&#8217;s important to know if it includes </span><b>state examinations (Staatsexamen)</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. In Germany, some degree programmes have final exams which are conducted by a government board. If you&#8217;re studying medicine, law, education, or pharmacy programmes, your degree may be divided into a theoretical, classroom-based section, capped by your first state exam, and a practical education phase which has its own state examination at the end. If this applies to your programme, before you enrol, ensure your degree is recognized by the country where you plan to work after graduation.</span></p>
<p><b>Dual study programmes</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> also </span><a href="https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/universities/dual-studies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">alternate in-class learning with practical experience</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in their field through company placement and vocational training. As most of these programmes are offered by institutions teaching in German, they&#8217;re a better fit for students with strong German communication skills.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Class Formats</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Like in many other study destinations, your classes will be divided between ones that you need to take in order to graduate (or </span><b>Pflichtveranstaltungen</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">) and elective classes, where you can choose from a wider range of topics. While you may select this second group of classes from a more diverse class list, you&#8217;re still responsible for attending them and completing classwork, as you might guess from the German term which describes them: </span><b>Wahlpflichtveranstaltungen</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which translates to &#8216;compulsory elective courses.&#8217;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Within these two groups of classes, what the classrooms look like and how you&#8217;ll learn also varies:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Exercises</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Übung) allow students to test what they&#8217;ve learned in class. You&#8217;ll solve exercises and conduct experiments using scientific methods.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Lab rotations</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Praktikum) are popular in technical and natural science fields. In these classes, students build practical experience in their field in experiments at campus labs or workshops.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Lectures</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Vorlesung) are the largest classes. They&#8217;re teacher-led and often not very interactive.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Seminars </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">(Seminar) are more informal, and built for active discussions of key topics with the instructor and other students.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Tutorials</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Tutorium) are led by senior students (tutors). These classes build on what you&#8217;ve been taught in lectures, and can also include exam prep strategies.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To understand which types of classes you&#8217;ll need to take, check the programme&#8217;s Studienordnung (study regulations) on your institution&#8217;s website. You can also learn a lot at orientation events for first-semester students, so remember to attend those!</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23066" src="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7-300x300.png" alt="A group of students sit on the steps of a campus building." width="300" height="300" srcset="https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7-300x300.png 300w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7-150x150.png 150w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7-50x50.png 50w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7-100x100.png 100w, https://www.applyboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Rectangle_7.png 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Setting Your Schedule</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Every degree programme in Germany has a standard period of study (</span><b>Regelstudienzeit</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">). You&#8217;ll find this timeframe included on the programme&#8217;s information page, and with its exam regulations documents. Generally, </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/blog/why-is-steam-education-better-than-stem" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">students must complete 30 credit points per semester</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to finish within the standard period of study. In turn, to earn one credit point, students need to put in around 30 hours of work.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some students may wish to take more time to finish their degree. For students who want to work while studying, or with family or health obligations, spacing classes out makes sense. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For most international students, working while studying is common—our Spring 2025 Student Pulse Survey found </span><a href="https://www.applyboard.com/applyinsights-article/student-pulse-survey-spring-25" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">only 3% of student respondents didn&#8217;t expect to work during their studies</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">! However, course availability, government funding, and scholarships may be harder to acquire after the standard period of study has passed.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Standard Periods of Study</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How long a degree is expected to take </span><a href="https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/universities/the-right-degree-programme/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">varies by study level</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bachelor&#8217;s degrees take six to eight semesters to complete. The standard period of study is usually six semesters.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Master&#8217;s degrees vary between two and four semesters.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Doctorate degrees&#8217; duration varies by programme model. Either two to five years (traditional model; more self-determined) or three years (structured doctorate).</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As some master&#8217;s degrees are open to students with diverse academic histories, students with a degree related to their master&#8217;s may graduate faster. For example, in a master&#8217;s of sustainable engineering programme, Bachelor of Engineering grads may be able to graduate in three semesters. Meanwhile, students with a bachelor&#8217;s in another field may need to take an introductory semester in engineering classes, making their master&#8217;s degree four semesters long.</span></p>
