Australia is a great destination for many international students. If you want to study in Australia, it’s important to understand how the Australian academic year is set up, especially as it can vary by study level. Read on to learn more!

Primary and Secondary Schools

Australia welcomes international students as young as five years old, including the children of international tertiary-level students. 

• Children between the ages of 5 and 10 must live with a parent while in Australia.
• Children aged 11 or 12 may live with a parent or direct relative approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

While the primary and secondary school year generally begins in late January or early February, you’ll need to check with each school for their specific start date.

At the primary and secondary levels, the school year is divided into four terms, which usually begin in January (Term 1), April (Term 2), July (Term 3), and October (Term 4). There are set holiday times between each term to give students a break from their studies.

International students can enrol in primary school (kindergarten to Year 6) during any term. 

There are no English-language entry requirements for primary school children from kindergarten to Year 6. However, international students who are 12 or older may need to enrol at an Intensive English Centre before they can enrol in Year 7 at an Australian school.

English Language Courses

To improve your English language skills while in Australia, you may take an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (or ELICOS) programme. Course length ranges from 5 to 60 weeks, depending on your skill level and academic goals.

ELICOS courses are structured in weeks rather than semesters, and have multiple start dates throughout the year. This flexibility helps ELICOS courses fit into the lives of many international students.

To allow enough time to have your student visa processed, it’s wise to apply for your ELICOS course five to six months before it begins. While around 50% of student visas for this study level took as little as two weeks to process as of February 2026, processing could also take up to four months.

Pathway and Foundation Courses

These kinds of courses provide the skills international students need to thrive in higher education programs. Pathway courses include English-language preparation, Foundation studies, and international master’s qualifying programmes.

Students taking a Foundation academic year will usually start their course in February. The year is organized by semesters, which can have different lengths depending on the course.

Students pursuing an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course must check with their institution to see when these courses begin. At some institutions, EAP is offered in Semester 1 (a February/March start), Semester 2 (a July start), and during the summer semester, which often starts in November. However, at other institutions, EAP offerings are more limited.

Vocational Education and Training

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses provide students with practical learning opportunities so that they can graduate, job-ready, with learnings aligned to over 500 different careers. Many VET courses include work-integrated learning opportunities like placements or industry partnerships.

VET courses range from one to four years in length, and their academic years are structured as either two semesters or four terms. Most courses begin in late January or early February, though start dates vary.

Higher Education

The academic year at universities and non-university higher education providers can vary by study level. 

At the undergraduate level (think bachelor’s or vocational degrees), the academic year is often divided up into two semesters. Courses usually begin in the autumn session, which begins in late February or early March. Applications for autumn intake open in August or September, and it’s wise to apply early, as popular programs can fill up quickly.

Alternatively, students can enrol in the spring semester (July/August intake), with applications opening in January or February. Verify specific dates with your target institutions. 

Note that some academic institutions use a trimester model, where the summer session or trimester is a formal teaching period for all students. The summer session start date varies—for example, for the 2025/26 academic year, it will range from September 2 to December 14. So, if your institution uses this model, you’ll want to check directly with the admissions team to understand what your academic year looks like.

The postgraduate or master’s level works similarly, with the academic year usually divided into two semesters starting in February or March (autumn session) and July or August (spring session). 

At the doctoral degree level, you’ll negotiate your course start date with a doctoral degree supervisor. Generally, there isn’t a set start date for your course, as most doctoral candidates don’t attend regular classes.

Looking Forward

Studying in Australia is an exciting, life-changing opportunity. To ensure a smooth start to your journey, keep these things in mind:

• Understand key deadlines, and plan your timeline accordingly. Reach out to your target institutions’ admissions teams to understand intake and submission dates. You put a lot of work in your study abroad application, and being delayed by a semester because you missed a deadline would be disappointing.
• Apply early. Australia is a popular destination for students around the world, and popular courses can fill up quickly.
• Give yourself lots of time to get your applications ready. Assembling everything you need for your course and student visa applications can be surprisingly time-consuming. This is especially true if you need to assemble a portfolio or have any documents translated.

Policies and requirements vary depending on the type of visa an international student holds. These differences are not always straightforward, which is why we’ll outline key things you need to know about health and travel insurance in the US below.

Travel Insurance in the US

Travel insurance protects you and your belongings as you travel from your home country to the US. While it isn’t required, it’s still a good idea for international students to consider buying a travel insurance plan.

A typical travel insurance plan includes:

• Medical expenses in the case of an accident or illness
• Reimbursement (up to a set amount) for the damage or loss of baggage and belongings
• Personal liability: If you cause property damage or injury to someone else while traveling, the insurance company will pay for consequential losses up to a set amount
• Trip disruption: For example, if your connecting flight is delayed, travel insurance will cover the cost of your accommodation and food during your wait time
• The cost of bringing a family member or friend to stay with you if you’re hospitalized

Not all plans cover all of these circumstances. It’s important to research beforehand, so you understand which travel insurance plans suit your needs.

Health Insurance in the US

When budgeting for living expenses, set aside money for health insurance. It might not be mandatory, depending on your visa class (more on that below), but your academic institution may require you to buy an insurance plan before you can enroll in classes. Either way, health insurance is a smart purchase.

In 2026, health insurance typically costs from US$1,200 to US$4,000 per year, depending on whether you purchase through your academic institution or a private provider. Private plans can be less expensive, but may only work at a smaller group of health care facilities.

Though this may sound expensive, medical costs in the US can add up fast. For example, depending on the level of care, a trip to the emergency department of a mid-sized hospital in 2025 cost between US$450 and US$5,200—and that doesn’t include fees for Emergency Department physicians. Even a flu shot can cost up to US$125 for folks without insurance, although you can find no- and low-cost options for common vaccines at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, and through schools or community organizations.

To have enough time to research different plans and set one up, we recommend starting to look at different health insurance options four to five months before you arrive in the US.

Health Insurance for International Students with F and M Visas

International students holding F and M student visas must cover all medical costs incurred during their time in the US. Wondering which visa you’ll need? Here’s how the U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlines eligibility for each visa class:

• F-1 visa: For students taking an academic program, including English language programs, at an academic institution (including universities, colleges, high schools, private elementary schools, conservatories, and seminaries).
• M-1 visa: For students completing a technical program at a vocational or other recognized non-academic institution. NOT for language training programs.

Many Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified colleges and universities have their own health insurance plans, and will enroll new international students into these plans automatically. Though this means less paperwork for you, speak with your designated school official to understand how your insurance works. (For example, verify coverage for dental care if you plan to play contact sports.) If your campus health plan doesn’t include something you think is important, you can purchase additional private health insurance.

To make accessing health care easier, many colleges and universities have an on-campus health centre. They offer general medical care to students, including first aid treatment for minor injuries and illnesses. 

Health Insurance for International Students with J Visas

A J-1 (Exchange Visitor) visa is for students participating in an academic exchange program at the high school or university level. J-1 exchange visitors and any J-2 dependents must have adequate health insurance coverage for the full duration of their visa. 

To protect international students and their families, minimum levels of health insurance coverage have been established by the federal government. 

As of 2026, at minimum, health insurance coverage must provide:

• Medical benefits of at least US$100,000 per illness or accident (higher is better)
• A maximum deductible of US$500 per condition per plan year
• Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to their home country up to US$50,000
• Minimum 75% coverage for each accident or illness (which means the student pays up to 25% of expenses but no more)
• Repatriation of remains up to US$25,000

Additionally, the insurance company underwriting the policy must have specific credentials to ensure students are adequately protected. 

Your health insurance as a J visa holder must be current and adequate for your entire time in the US. In fact, US government regulations require that J visas are terminated if a J-1 exchange visitor or their J-2 dependent willfully fails to remain in compliance with insurance requirements.

Creating Your Academic Roadmap

Consider starting your research as early as 24 months before your desired program’s start date. A good way to start is by talking with people you know who have worked or studied in Canada. Learn about their experiences, and ask them what they wish they knew before arriving. 

With 20 months to go, continue researching and/or working with your student advisor to create a list of top programs. Understanding specific program requirements can help you determine which tests you should take before applying. These tests could include postgraduate standardized tests, English language proficiency tests like TOEFL and IELTS, or French language proficiency tests like Test d’Evaluation du Français (TEF) and Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF).

Understanding Postgraduate Standardized Tests 

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

The GRE measures a student’s readiness for postgraduate study. There are two types of GRE: a General Test and a Subject Test. 

The GRE General Test is a multiple-choice exam which takes around two hours to complete. You may complete it at a test centre, or online with a virtual proctor. It assesses your: 

• Verbal reasoning
• Quantitative reasoning
• Analytical writing skills 

The GRE is adaptive, which means that how you score in early sections will affect how easy or hard later sections are. Your GRE scores are valid for five years.

GRE Subject Tests are for students with an extensive background or undergraduate major in a specific discipline. Taking a GRE Subject Test can help you highlight your subject knowledge and stand out. GRE Subject Tests are available for: 

• Math
• Physics
• Psychology 

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) 

The GMAT is a standardized test for master’s of business administration (MBA) applicants. While some business schools also accept GRE scores, if you’re pursuing a future in consulting, management, or logistics, the GMAT may be a better fit.

Its sections include:

• Analytical writing assessment (essay format)
• Integrated reasoning
• Quantitative reasoning (algebra, arithmetic, and geometry)
• Verbal reasoning

Before you write the GMAT, note that you’ll be given two minutes at the end of the test to accept or cancel your score. So, go into the test with a target score in mind, and understand whether your chosen schools require your best score or all scores from multiple attempts. 

How to Prepare for Graduate Admissions Tests

To better understand each test’s timing and style, take online practice tests. Once you take the GRE or GMAT, if you don’t like your score, both tests may be re-taken. However, each attempt requires a payment of the exam fee—so use the free practice tests, and don’t treat the actual test day like practice. 

We recommend taking the GRE or GMAT 15 to 18 months before your chosen institution’s intake date. This gives you time for retakes, if needed, and ensures your scores arrive before application deadlines.

Assembling Your Program Applications

With 12 to 13 months to go, start assembling your applications. A good way to start is by drafting your statements of interest or personal statements. These statements allow you to highlight your research interests, how your education has prepared you for success in this program, and why you’ve chosen a specific program.

Also, start assembling a resume and a portfolio of work, if you’re applying to a program that requires one. Programs like architecture, software engineering, and design may ask for portfolios. 

To obtain certified copies of academic transcripts, reach out to the institution where you completed your undergrad. Processing times can vary, so it’s wise to request these as soon as possible.

Lastly, contact past professors or employers to request letters of recommendation. Ask for references from people who will give you a strong, personalized reference, as a general letter can hurt your chances of being accepted. Let references know which institutions you’re applying to, the deadlines, and what’s required of them, so they can write the best letter possible.

Submitting Your Applications

Once your application materials are ready, start applying. We recommend starting to apply for programs 9 to 10 months before you want to begin your studies. This gives you enough time to apply for immigration documents. For example, to apply for a Canadian study permit, you’ll need a Letter of Acceptance, which can take up to two months to be issued.  

It’s good to know when each program’s application deadlines are, and which intakes align with your target programs. Many programs start exclusively in September.

Canadian academic institutions have up to three yearly intakes:

• Fall: Application deadlines are between January and March. The semester starts in September.
• Summer: Application deadlines range between January and March, with the semester starting in May.
• Winter: Application deadlines range between September and November. The semester starts in January.

Some institutions have rolling intakes. This means classes start every couple of months. Other schools offer rolling admission, where incoming applications are processed as they are received, and programs close once filled.

Common program application requirements:

• An official bachelor’s degree transcript, or a diploma transcript for a postgraduate diploma or a certificate program which meets the minimum GPA requirement.
• Proof of language proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS for English; TEF or TCF for French.
• Standardized test scores: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
• An educational credential assessment establishing the equivalency of coursework completed outside of the US or Canada. This may be done through an organization like WES or ECE.
• A personal statement or statement of interest.
• A resume.
• Letters of recommendation.
• A portfolio.

Institution Responses and Student Visas

With four to five months to go, you should be hearing back from the institutions you applied to. Now, work independently or with an international student advisor to make your program selection, accept and return the offer, and pay a deposit if required. 

Study permits can take multiple weeks, even a few months, to process. So, it’s smart to start your application early. As part of the study permit application, applicants are encouraged to write a letter of explanation that addresses potential questions or concerns, like if you took an authorized leave from your studies, have a conditional offer of admission, or are missing a required document. These formal letters are one to two pages long, and can also speak to your study plan, travel history, and ties to your home country. Drafting this letter and gathering supporting documents can take a while, so start working on it as early as possible.

Moving Forward

Once your offer is returned, plan for your daily life! Set up your travel arrangements, find student housing, and learn about different health insurance options. 

Take time to explore what makes your new home special, whether that’s trying rock climbing on Canada’s west coast, line dancing in the prairies, or kite skiing in the north. Engaging with your new community can help it feel like home.

Note: While this information is current as of February 2026, the legislation guiding insurance, as well as individual policy coverage, is subject to change. Always check official government sources and insurance company pages for the most up-to-date information.

Travel Insurance vs Health Insurance

As an international student, you must have valid health insurance coverage for your entire stay in Canada. How health insurance works and what it covers varies across the country. 

Meanwhile, travel insurance is optional. It protects you while travelling to and from Canada, and can help if your luggage is lost or your flight is delayed. Check with your airline or insurance providers in your home country to see what travel insurance plans they offer. Some credit cards offer travel insurance as a perk, so check your card benefits too!

Health Insurance Options Across Canada

Alberta

If you have a 12-month study permit for an academic institution in Alberta and plan to live there for 12 months or more, you’re eligible to apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

Students with a study permit which is valid for less than 12 months may be eligible for AHCIP if their application includes a letter from their academic institution confirming their enrolment and the student’s intention to live in Alberta for at least 12 months. 

Note that AHCIP is only valid for students living and studying at an Albertan academic institution. If you move out of the province or are studying at an institution in another province, you must contact AHCIP to have your coverage cancelled.

British Columbia

International students who live in British Columbia (BC) for at least six months in a calendar year are eligible for BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP). 

As an incoming international student, you must apply for MSP as soon as you arrive in BC. In order to access MSP, you must pay a monthly International Student Health Fee. MSP applications take around three months to process, but the iMED plan supplies international students with basic health insurance during this interim period. 

Students who aren’t eligible for MSP must purchase private health care coverage after iMED expires. Many academic institutions offer extended health insurance options.

Manitoba

International students studying in Manitoba on a valid study permit must purchase private health insurance through their educational institution or a private insurance company. However, if an international student or their spouse holds a Canadian work permit, such as a co-op, work permit, or post-graduation work permit, they may be eligible for provincial health care in Manitoba.

New Brunswick

To receive New Brunswick Medicare, international students must have a study permit valid for at least 12 months and proof of full-time registration at a university or college. However, New Brunswick Medicare provides basic medical coverage, so obtaining extended health coverage with a private provider or your academic institution is recommended. 

Newfoundland and Labrador

Once registered, all international students are automatically admitted to the Foreign Health Insurance Plan. International students enrolled in full-time studies for at least 12 months may access free basic health coverage through Newfoundland’s Medical Care Plan (MCP). If you’re not eligible for the MCP, you must purchase private health coverage. As MCP provides only basic coverage, all international students are urged to consider extended health insurance plans.

Northwest Territories

International students planning to study in the Northwest Territories may apply for NWT health care (NWTHC) coverage through the territorial government’s Health Services Administration Office (part of the Department of Health and Social Services). Students will need a copy of their study permit and confirmation of their enrolment in an academic institution in the Northwest Territories. NWTHC doesn’t cover extended benefits like eyeglasses, dental care, or prescription medications, so it could be wise to purchase a private insurance plan to cover these services.

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia (NS), you must purchase health insurance for your first year of studies, as international students aren’t immediately eligible for the provincial health care program. Your institution may offer health care plans, and some will require enrolment in their plan when you start your studies. 

Public health insurance becomes available to international students after living in Nova Scotia for 12 months through Medical Services Insurance (MSI). Once you’re eligible, you’ll need to apply for a Nova Scotia Health Card, which you’ll use to access care. Once you have MSI, you may opt out of the private health insurance plan.

Nunavut

Nunavut isn’t home to any designated learning institutions (DLIs) yet, which means that international students cannot study there.

Ontario

International students aren’t eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). As a result, every academic institution in Ontario provides health insurance for students to purchase. Public universities usually provide health insurance through the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). Colleges and private institutions in Ontario offer plans from various providers. 

Note: When you’re planning your study abroad budget, remember that health insurance offered through academic institutions isn’t free, and their cost is often added to international tuition fees.

Prince Edward Island

If you’re planning to study and live in Prince Edward Island (PEI) for at least six months plus a day, and are legally able to work off-campus, you may apply for public health insurance. You may apply for a provincial health card as soon as you arrive in PEI.

To find a family doctor or nurse practitioner, you’ll need to add your name to the Provincial Patient Registry separately.

Quebec

Quebec has a reciprocal agreement that allows citizens from 11 other countries to access free basic health insurance through Quebec’s Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). As of 2026, eligible countries are:

• Belgium
• Denmark
• Finland
• France
• Greece
• Luxembourg
• Norway
• Portugal
• Romania
• Serbia
• Sweden

To ensure you’re covered as soon as you arrive, ensure you request a certificate of coverage from the organization responsible for social security in your country of residence. Then, after arriving, file your application with the Quebec Health Insurance Plan (any documents not in French or English will need to be translated).

If you’re not from one of those 11 countries, don’t worry! While you’re not eligible for public health insurance, most academic institutions in Quebec will automatically enrol international students in their group health insurance plan, and add the cost to your tuition fees.

Saskatchewan

International students who can prove full-time enrolment at an accredited academic institution in Saskatchewan may register for a Saskatchewan Health Card, which provides free basic health coverage. Students will become eligible for health coverage on the first day of the third month after they arrive in Canada. So, it’s important to have private health insurance to cover your first two months in Canada.

Yukon

International students cannot apply to the Yukon Health Insurance Plan. They must purchase private health insurance to cover these costs during their studies.

In reality, 90% of Canadians live within 100 kilometers of the Canada-United States border, and share latitudes with global cities you might not expect! For example, Calgary, Alberta lines up with London, England; St. John’s, Newfoundland and Seattle, Washington, are within 50 latitudinal kilometers; and Vancouver, British Columbia matches up with Paris, France. This means the weather across Canada is very seasonal, and much more diverse than many expect!

Packing Guidelines

First, visit your academic institution’s website, as it may have a custom packing list (like this one from the University of Waterloo)! Once you’ve looked at a few lists, build your own. A custom list can make packing easier, as you can check things off your list as you go.

Also, learn which items the Canadian Border Services Agency won’t allow through Canadian Customs so you don’t pack them by mistake. Restricted or regulated items include meat products, plants, pets, and fresh fruit. While prescription drugs are allowed, they are subject to specific rules. So, if you take regular medications, you’ll want to know what the rules for bringing them into Canada are. Some medications available over-the-counter in your home country might require a prescription in Canada, and vice versa. 

Your pet may be able to join you in Canada, but you’ll need to know the rules and fill out all necessary paperwork, both before you leave and at the border, to meet Canada’s import requirements. It’s a good idea to research the airports or land crossings that you’ll travel through beforehand so you know what your pet’s journey will be like, too.

The Essentials

In your carry-on or personal item, store your passport, original identification, and all of the essential travel documents you’ll need to start your new life as a student. 

International student documentation includes:

• Study permit documents (study permit approval letter OR valid study permit)
• Original transcripts and diploma/degree certificates
• Letter of acceptance
• Temporary resident visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) 
• Proof of sufficient funds for at least the first year of study
• The address of your long-term housing in Canada
• Proof of tuition payment
• Language proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE)
• Vaccination proof or immigration medical exam results, if necessary

Have backup photocopies of all of these documents in your luggage, and leave second copies with your family in your home country. Also ensure any medications or medical devices are in your hand luggage, so they’re within reach. 

If you’re traveling with jewelry, cash, or other valuables, keep those in your carry-on luggage, too (along with a few changes of clothes) in case your larger suitcases are lost or delayed.

What to Pack for Life in Canada

Canada has a wide range of climates. A region’s climate can be affected by how close it is to large bodies of water (and yes, the Great Lakes count)! Nearby lakes or oceans mean more rain or snow, and even when it’s sunny, the air is humid. 

In short: coastal humidity can make temperatures feel more extreme. Meanwhile, central Canada’s ‘dry’ air often feels more manageable. 

Most students dress casually on campus, and classrooms are heated and air-conditioned, so they’ll have a similar temperature year-round. However, for travel between class and life outside of school, you should dress for the season. This means: 

• A sweater and jeans with a light coat (and maybe rainproof boots) in the spring and fall.
• Light t-shirts and shorts or skirts with sneakers in the summer.

Winter clothes take up lots of space, so many international students buy winter clothes in Canada. In larger communities, visit second-hand stores or discount retailers like Winners for previous seasons’ fashions at lower prices–and regardless of where you shop, buy your gear before the first snowfall for the best selection.  

Headed to a city like Edmonton, Quebec City, or Winnipeg, where winter temperatures drop below -20°C? A thermal base layer can help you stay warm while walking around campus or waiting for the bus. 

Local Knowledge: Cotton dries slowly, so base layers made of merino wool or synthetic fleece are best.

Students who plan to work at a part-time job or through a co-op program or internship should bring some business-casual clothes. Even if your workplace is casual, one or two formal outfits are good for interviews or special events.

While most global skincare and makeup brands are available in Canada, if there’s a regional brand you like, check to see if it’s available in (or can be shipped to) Canada. If shipping is really expensive, bring a few extras from home. If you take any medications, check to see what refilling your supply looks like. Some medications which need a prescription elsewhere are over-the-counter in Canada, and vice versa.

Having something small that reminds you of back home can help you feel at home in Canada. It could be a favorite scent, book, ornament, or even a food like a hot sauce or spice mix.

On January 20, 2026, the UK government launched its new International Education Strategy (IES). This strategy, part of the government’s broader Plan for Change, aims to support the nation’s path to renewal by “increasing exports, supporting skilled employment, and broadening access to high-quality education provision.” It outlines how the UK’s education sector and federal government will work together, and highlights specific government priorities.

The IES is co-owned by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, the Department of Education, and the Department for Business and Trade, with support from many other departments. Read on for a closer look at the strategy’s goals and how it will support international students in 2026 and beyond.

What are the Goals of the International Education Strategy?

The IES has three key ambitions. The first of these is to increase the UK’s international standing through education at every level of study. This goal involves:

• Increasing opportunities for international research collaboration
• Boosting government leadership in transnational education (TNE)
• Improving global recognition of UK-based academic qualifications
• Expanding the number of study, work, and volunteer opportunities abroad for youth in the UK

The next ambition revolves around the sustainable recruitment of high-quality international students from diverse countries. The IES refers to international students as “global changemakers,” highlighting their ability to become future leaders in the UK and around the world. Ensuring international students are recruited responsibly and have a positive experience while studying in the UK are both central to this goal.

The third goal aims to expand the education sector’s productivity. By 2030, the IES aims to grow the value of UK education exports from £32.3 billion per year (in 2022, the most recent data) to £40 billion per year. The International Education Champion (Professor Sir Steve Smith) will drive education export growth through things like partnerships in focus countries like India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. Emerging opportunities in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Pakistan were also noted. To support this growth, UK-based education providers would receive access to financial instruments and practical support from the government.

The IES also highlighted the growth of transnational education (TNE) as a driver for education exports. Over the past decade, the UK’s higher education TNE headcount of in-person learners has grown by 87%, and in the 2023/24 academic year, UK universities offered degrees in 176 countries and territories through in-person TNE. This flexible education model includes overseas campuses, online courses, and joint programmes. As TNE grows, a more diverse range of students will be able to access a UK education.

How Will the IES Affect International Students in the UK?

Like the 2025 White Paper, the IES doesn’t directly change or update any laws or government guidance related to immigration. 

However, the IES does refer to upcoming changes like the international student levy. This levy will initiate in August 2028 (the start of the 2028/29 academic year), and is a £925 yearly fee which will be charged to higher education providers in England for each international student enrolled at their institution. While institutions, not students, pay this fee, some English institutions may increase international tuition in parallel. Note that this future levy does not apply to institutions in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. 

The IES’ overall focus on sustainable recruitment levels, student quality and graduate outcomes, and increased student population diversity speak to the government’s aim to ensure students from around the world are able and prepared to study in the UK. This includes a dedicated drive to enhance global mobility both for its domestic and international students. The IES refers to a return to Erasmus+ in 2027, which is the EU’s flagship education exchange and partnerships programme. As such, international student interest from the EU is likely to increase in the years ahead. 

The strategy also reinforced support of the Turing Scheme and the US-UK Fulbright Programme. It also supports the continuation of prestigious scholarships like the Chevening, Commonwealth, and Marshall scholarship programmes.

Looking Forward

Supporting international students throughout their study journey is also central to the IES. Through the Education Sector Action Group, the government will work with the higher education sector to ensure support systems are strengthened, campus infrastructure is adequate, and students have better access to local housing.

Prospective international students should consider the UK’s International Education Strategy more like a map than a list of instructions. Its launch illustrates government priorities and initiatives, but does not independently put any of these suggestions or changes into law.

One of the first things international students notice when studying in Germany is how much control they have over their academic journey. This can be an advantage, as it allows you to customize your academic schedule. But the process can also be confusing, especially when you first arrive. Below, we’ll dive into how study programmes are structured, what the average class load is per semester, and some resources students can use as they prepare for each term.

These master’s degrees can prepare you for in-demand careers in Germany and worldwide.

Types of Academic Programmes in Germany

Germany’s academic institutions support learning across a wide variety of fields. In fact, over 17,000 bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes are offered across the country! 

Tip: To understand how degrees you’re considering compare to others in that field of study, check out the Centre for Higher Education (CHE)’s yearly rankings by subject.

Before starting your degree, it’s important to know if it includes state examinations (Staatsexamen). In Germany, some degree programmes have final exams which are conducted by a government board. If you’re studying medicine, law, education, or pharmacy programmes, your degree may be divided into a theoretical, classroom-based section, capped by your first state exam, and a practical education phase which has its own state examination at the end. If this applies to your programme, before you enrol, ensure your degree is recognized by the country where you plan to work after graduation.

Dual study programmes also alternate in-class learning with practical experience in their field through company placement and vocational training. As most of these programmes are offered by institutions teaching in German, they’re a better fit for students with strong German communication skills.

Class Formats

Like in many other study destinations, your classes will be divided between ones that you need to take in order to graduate (or Pflichtveranstaltungen) and elective classes, where you can choose from a wider range of topics. While you may select this second group of classes from a more diverse class list, you’re still responsible for attending them and completing classwork, as you might guess from the German term which describes them: Wahlpflichtveranstaltungen, which translates to ‘compulsory elective courses.’

Within these two groups of classes, what the classrooms look like and how you’ll learn also varies:

• Exercises (Übung) allow students to test what they’ve learned in class. You’ll solve exercises and conduct experiments using scientific methods.
• Lab rotations (Praktikum) are popular in technical and natural science fields. In these classes, students build practical experience in their field in experiments at campus labs or workshops.
• Lectures (Vorlesung) are the largest classes. They’re teacher-led and often not very interactive.
• Seminars (Seminar) are more informal, and built for active discussions of key topics with the instructor and other students.
• Tutorials (Tutorium) are led by senior students (tutors). These classes build on what you’ve been taught in lectures, and can also include exam prep strategies.

To understand which types of classes you’ll need to take, check the programme’s Studienordnung (study regulations) on your institution’s website. You can also learn a lot at orientation events for first-semester students, so remember to attend those!

Setting Your Schedule

Every degree programme in Germany has a standard period of study (Regelstudienzeit). You’ll find this timeframe included on the programme’s information page, and with its exam regulations documents. Generally, students must complete 30 credit points per semester to finish within the standard period of study. In turn, to earn one credit point, students need to put in around 30 hours of work.

Some students may wish to take more time to finish their degree. For students who want to work while studying, or with family or health obligations, spacing classes out makes sense. 

For most international students, working while studying is common—our Spring 2025 Student Pulse Survey found only 3% of student respondents didn’t expect to work during their studies! However, course availability, government funding, and scholarships may be harder to acquire after the standard period of study has passed.

Standard Periods of Study

How long a degree is expected to take varies by study level:

• Bachelor’s degrees take six to eight semesters to complete. The standard period of study is usually six semesters.
• Master’s degrees vary between two and four semesters.
• Doctorate degrees’ duration varies by programme model. Either two to five years (traditional model; more self-determined) or three years (structured doctorate).

As some master’s degrees are open to students with diverse academic histories, students with a degree related to their master’s may graduate faster. For example, in a master’s of sustainable engineering programme, Bachelor of Engineering grads may be able to graduate in three semesters. Meanwhile, students with a bachelor’s in another field may need to take an introductory semester in engineering classes, making their master’s degree four semesters long.

The United Kingdom (UK) is one of the top destinations in the world for international students. It’s acclaimed for its excellent academic reputation and quality of life. During the 2024/25 academic year, over 440,000 student visas were issued to international students. 

To study in the UK as an international student, you will need a visa. Here are key things you need to know about UK visas for international students.

Which UK Student Visa is Right for You?

If you’re 16 or older, and want to pursue a higher education course in the UK, a Student visa is likely the best choice. However, if you’re between 4 and 17 years old and want to attend an independent (private) school, you can apply for a Child Student visa.

If you’re applying for a Child Student visa, you’ll need proof of consent from your parent or guardian to study in the UK, proof that you’ll have sufficient funds to support yourself while studying, and an unconditional offer from an independent school. You’ll also need to prove that you have a suitable place to live while studying.

How to Apply for a UK Student Visa

All future students must apply online for a UK Student visa. You may start your application up to six months before your course begins if you’re applying from outside the UK, or three months before if applying from inside the UK. Generally, applications from outside the UK are processed faster, with an average response rate of three weeks. Applications submitted within the UK typically take around eight weeks.

If your supporting documents must be verified, you have a criminal conviction, or you need to attend a visa interview, application processing may take longer.

In the UK, student visas are sponsored by the licensed institution you’ll be studying at. You must have an unconditional offer of admission from a licensed sponsor before you can apply. This comes as a reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which you’ll include in your visa application.

Plan your application timeline carefully. You must apply for your visa within six months of receiving your CAS.

UK Student Visa Criteria

The following course types are eligible for Student visas:

• A full-time course leading to a qualification that’s below degree level (Regulated Qualifications Framework or RQF level 3, 4, or 5) with at least 15 hours per week of organized daytime study
• A full-time course leading to a qualification that’s at or above degree level (RQF level 6, 7, or 8)
• Full-time course at degree level or above (RQF level 6,7, or 8) that’s equivalent to a UK higher education course and is being delivered as part of a longer course overseas
• A part-time course leading to a qualification that’s above degree level (RQF level 7 or above)
• A recognized foundation programme for postgraduate doctors or dentists
• An English language course at level B2 or above per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Note: You may also need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate if you’re studying sensitive topics at RQF level 7 or above.

The Scottish education system does not use the RQF scale as noted above. If you’re planning to study in Scotland, refer to official sources like government websites to compare how qualifications across the UK work.

Information Required for UK Student Visas

International students must submit several supporting documents with their student visa application. Use the UK government’s website to learn which ones you must provide.

International students must typically submit the following documents with their application:

• A current passport or other valid travel document
• Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

You may also need to provide:

• Biometric information
• A valid ATAS certificate (usually for master’s degrees and above)
• Proof of English-language proficiency
• Proof you can pay tuition and support yourself and any family travelling with you
  (If you’ve received sponsorship for your course fees and living costs over the past 12 months, you’ll need written consent for your visa application from your financial sponsor)
• Proof of parental or legal guardian consent and proof of their relationship with you if you’re under 18
• Tuberculosis test results

Biometric Information

When you submit your visa application, you may be asked to book an appointment at a visa application center to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph). Some students may be asked to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan their identity document instead. It depends on where you’re from and what kind of passport you have. Either way, you’ll be told which process you must follow when you apply for your visa.

If your application is successful, you’ll receive an eVisa, which is a digital record of your immigration status and identity. Your eVisa will also indicate what you’re allowed to do while in the UK (study, work, etc.) and can be used as proof of immigration status when, for example, you apply to rent an apartment or start a part-time job. 

Your decision letter (or email) will explain how you can create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account and access your eVisa.

English Language Ability

The UK government requires students to demonstrate a specific level of English language proficiency when applying for a student visa. The language requirements for a UK student visa can be different than those required for admission into the course you’re studying.

Your visa sponsor (the academic institution) will assess your English language abilities. The most common way to demonstrate proficiency is by taking a government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).

Financial Capacity

Some international students must show they’ll have enough money to support themselves while in the UK. Students from some countries are exempt from this requirement, so check whether this condition applies to you. 

“Financial capacity” means proving you can cover the cost of your travel, one year’s tuition, living expenses, and any other expenses or fees. The money must be in your account for a minimum of 28 days, and the end date of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of your visa application date.

The amount you need to show depends on where you’ll be studying. For example, the cost of living is higher in London (both in the city itself and the 32 London boroughs). As of January 2026, you must show access to at least: 

• £1,529 per month (for up to nine months) for courses in London
• £1,171 per month (for up to nine months) for courses outside London

If you’re bringing a partner or dependents, you must show you can cover their expenses as well. Currently, these amounts are:

• £845 per person per month in London
• £680 per person per month outside of London

Share copies of bank statements, loan details, and scholarship award information to strengthen your application.

Healthcare Surcharge

As part of the visa application fees, international students staying for longer than six months in the UK must also pay an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for themselves, and anyone travelling with them. The IHS helps to fund the national healthcare system, and gives students access to free health care while living in the UK.

This means that international students will not have to pay to visit a doctor’s office, health care centre, or hospital while at school. However, you’ll still need to pay for dental and optical treatment, and any medicine prescribed by a doctor. Fortunately, health insurance can cover some of the cost of your optical, dental, or prescription drug needs.

Travelling with Family

As of January 1, 2024, the only international students permitted to obtain visas for their dependants are postgraduate students on research programmes.

A dependent could be your:

• Husband, wife, or civil partner
• Unmarried (common-law) partner
• Children under 18 years old (this includes if they were born in the UK during your stay)

When you apply, you’ll need to show proof of your relationship. A birth certificate or marriage certificate are the most common options.

Length of Stay

A student visa is typically issued for the full duration of your studies. For courses that last over six months, international students can arrive in the UK up to one month before their course starts. Studying for less than six months? These students can arrive up to one week before their course begins. In either case, students must not travel to the UK before the start date on their study visa.

In general, students who are 18 or older and taking a degree course may stay in the UK for up to five years. Meanwhile, students pursuing non-degree credentials may stay in the UK for up to two years.

Depending on individual circumstances, students may extend their Student visa to continue their studies, or switch to a Graduate visa after completing their studies. 

For students who would like to stay in the UK after graduation and gain work experience, the Graduate visa is a popular option. However, the standard length of this visa type is changing. Graduate visa applications submitted on or before December 31, 2026, will last up to two years, except for doctoral students, whose visas may be up to three years long. On and after January 1, 2027, the standard length of the Graduate visa will drop to 18 months. That said, doctoral students’ Graduate visa duration will not change.

While travel insurance is optional, both health and travel insurance will provide you and your loved ones with peace of mind during your time abroad.

Travel Insurance in the UK

Travel insurance protects you and your belongings during your trip from your home country to the UK. It typically includes trip disruptions, medical care related to an accident or illness, reimbursement for the damage or loss of baggage, and personal liability. As international travel can have unexpected delays or mishaps, travel insurance can be valuable, though it isn’t mandatory for international students coming to the UK.

Unlike health insurance, you’ll buy travel insurance from your country of residence before leaving for the UK. If it’s likely you’ll visit your home country at different times during your studies abroad, consider an annual multi-trip insurance plan, which can be less expensive than buying multiple single-trip plans.

Remember, different travel insurance plans cover different things. So, if you decide to buy a plan, take the time to find one that suits you. Not sure which option to choose? Ask your college or university’s international student office for ideas and reputable providers.

Tip: Some credit cards include travel insurance. Before you buy a plan, ask your bank if you’re already covered through your credit card!

Health Insurance in the UK

Many international students in the UK should factor the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) into their budget. Below, we’ll explore what the IHS costs and covers, how IHS refunds work, and basic information on private health insurance. As the IHS amount is regularly updated, check the UK government’s website for the most current information before you apply.

Immigration Health Surcharge

If you’re going to study in the UK for six months or longer, you must pay the IHS when you apply for your visa. The IHS funds the UK’s healthcare system, and by paying, you’ll gain access to the National Health Service (NHS) at no additional cost starting on the day your student visa begins. This means that you can visit a family doctor or hospital for free. That said, you’ll still need to pay for some health services, including prescriptions, dental treatment, assisted conception, or eye tests.

As of January 2026, the yearly IHS amount for international students is £776. If you have family members applying to join you on a dependent visa, they must also pay the same IHS fee. If your visa includes part of a year (for example, if your course is 18 months long), your IHS amount may be prorated for the partial year.

Remember: The IHS is a separate charge from the student visa application fee. 

Paying the Immigration Health Surcharge

You can use a credit or debit card to pay the IHS when applying online for your student visa. During the application, you’ll be asked for your course dates, plus the start and end dates on your certificate of sponsorship, if applicable. Include details of any dependents joining you in the UK, or anyone you’re applying to join in the UK if they’re not UK citizens or don’t have EU settled status.

After entering this information, you’ll be sent an email with an IHS reference number. This number will also appear on-screen after the payment is processed. This reference number can only be used once. If you reapply for a student visa, you’ll need a new one.

IHS Refunds or Reimbursement

If your visa application is rejected, your IHS fee will be refunded in full. You’ll also get a full IHS refund if you withdraw your visa application before a decision is made. (Note: Your student visa application fee is non-refundable.) 

International students will automatically receive a partial IHS refund if their visa is approved for a shorter period than requested. If a dependent on your student visa application is refused a visa, you’ll also be refunded their IHS charge.

Are you from the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein? If you’re planning to study full-time in the UK for more than six months, and won’t be working during your studies, you may be eligible for full or partial IHS reimbursement. Private Medical Insurance

International students and their dependents are not allowed to buy private health insurance instead of paying the IHS. However, you may buy private insurance in addition to the IHS. 

Private healthcare can be helpful if you want coverage for expenses like:

• Private medical treatment
• Expenses related to returning to your home country for medical treatment
• Loss of fees if you’re unable to finish your course

Every student’s use case for insurance will be different. If you think private insurance coverage would be helpful, research different insurance options to find which coverage suits you best.
